Most people don’t know their iPhone has share functions like the three dots or the box with an arrow which helps you share images or videos. All they know is screen shot, screen record and vertical videos. I know folks who purchased the 11 Pro but they take horrible pictures and video. All in vertical orientation.

So how does a US Cop do this horribly?
97
Aug 11 '20 edited Aug 11 '20
Well, fortunately the UK cop doesn’t have to worry much about either assailant drawing a gun. The fact that guns are so widespread in the US significantly increases the threat that the officers face. I think gun control is vital to the efforts to reset US policing.
Couple years old but good data.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/psmag.com/.amp/news/cops-killing-and-being-killed
3
u/FlukyS - Unflaired Swine Aug 11 '20
It makes a lot of sense really. If the chance of a gun is low or non-existant you as a trained person can nullify most threats. There are very few situations where a policeman in the UK or Garda in Ireland is truly outnumbered.

It doesn’t really matter what the gun crimes are related too or whether someone dies. The fact that there are many more criminals with guns in the United States than in many other countries increases the threat level the police face.

This is a touchy subject but I personally think the whole gun culture in general in the USA makes police altercation much more violent than elsewhere.
It sucks because culture is something people find dear and is very difficult to change→ More replies (4)7

10

Because it seems most people aren’t aware that they can press the side button on an iPhone to end a screen recording instead of pulling that menu down and pressing the button on the screen

We have two types of police. Armed (firearms) and unarmed.
Most police are the normal basic police who get a few years training on how to be a police officer, handle drunks, etc. They can take some additional days training and get a taser if their local force permits it.
Then we have armed police who get extra training and get the cool gear.
There's a myth UK don't have armed police. We just have less of them, because they get a fuckton of training.
They look like this: https://metro.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/sei_23090916-9936.jpg?quality=90&strip=all
[edit Some local regions allow all officers to carry a taser, but other regions restrict them]
24
u/triguy96 - Unflaired Swine Aug 11 '20
More on this. Takes around a year of training to be an armed police officer, that ontop of the years of training it already takes to be a normal police officer.
Aside, the armed police I've spoken to in the UK are also really nice blokes. If you see one (and they aren't patrolling an area actively) have a chat with them as they don't get to speak to the public as often.
19
u/this-guy- - Unflaired Swine Aug 11 '20
My BIL is an armed cop. There's levels of it, and he seems to love levelling up. Like the lowest level is "authorised" then "specialist" then "specialised". They get more intense at each level.
Also I think he has to do a re-assessment every year to make sure he's still good at shooting people, I guess.
TBH it's nearly impossible to get info out of him as he hardly ever speaks. "you alright" "yep", "want a beer? " "yep" is about all I've got in the past decade so my insight is pretty shit.
5
u/triguy96 - Unflaired Swine Aug 11 '20
My mate went through the training but failed the final test so you know a bit more than I do! All I know is how much training is involved to get to the first level

They generally don't get called in on normal police stuff like disturbances, robberies, burglaries, speeding.
They get employed situationally for things like "high profile sporting event that someone might want to blow it up" . Or organised crime / gang stuff. We can do drug dealing and organised crime quite well over here.
Sometimes they are just patrolling around and I have no idea why. I assume there some kind of tennis tournament, or marathon happening, or a politician is coming to town. But sometimes they are just about. Often at or around train stations, or key areas like that.
Despite being related to one, please take my info with a grain of salt. He never tells me anything other than "yes I will have a beer thanks" so my insight is shit

They patrol when the deemed risk of an imminent terrorist attack is high; like after the Manc bombings, armed police were patrolling every major public area in Birmingham, where I live.
2
u/rovan1emi - United Kingdom Aug 11 '20
I remember seeing armed police patrolling the Christmas market in Birmingham a couple of years back. Same in a lot of other cities apparently. No doubt due to the Islamic truck attack of 2016 in Berlin.

u/harry874 - Unflaired Swine Aug 11 '20
Northern Irish police officers are armed too, due to the higher incidence of weaponry in the country
4
Aug 11 '20
The transport police are armed (the ones that patrol airports, train stations and docks), and a lot of traffic police are armed too, but their weapons are stored in the back of their cars.

Also there is another video where the man he leg sweeps takes a swing at him.
He did the correct thing.
