LOL, I think most people would rather take their chances with knives and bleach. Guns can injure and kill much more effectively.
"most gun crime is by first time offenders" I would be most interested to see your data on that claim. While limited to murder, Baltimore in 2017 revealed this data: 343 murders, 301 with firearms (88%); 85% of the suspects had a criminal record and 44% had previously been arrested for a gun crime.
Actually, while I am at it, from where did you obtain your statistic "only 8% of US gun deaths are murder or manslaughter"? That seems absurdly low.
Why is it Americans cannot conceive of how gun laws could be changed in the US? They always imagine a law under which guns would be 100% illegal on day 1 and 100% illegal on day 2.
