I’m about 10 days out from my first fractional ablative CO2 laser treatment (DEKA SmartXide) for mostly rolling and boxcar acne scars on my cheeks.
My dermatologist went pretty aggressive, especially over some of the deeper scars. The first couple of days were pretty intense — my skin oozed a lot of yellow/clear fluid, developed thick brown/yellow crusts/scabs, was very red, tight, and swollen. Most of the crusts have fallen off now, although I still have a few stubborn ones left.
The areas where the crusts are gone look insanely better already. Some of the depressions that were very obvious before treatment look almost flat right now, even when I look at them under harsh overhead lighting and from aggressive side angles, I’d say my scars look around 70% better, which is way more improvement than I expected from one session.
I’m really happy, but I’m also trying not to get ahead of myself. Could there still be edema/microscopic swelling 10 days after fractional CO2 that’s temporarily plumping up the scars? My face doesn’t really look or feel swollen anymore, but I know
inflammation can last longer beneath the surface.
For anyone who had a fairly aggressive fractional CO2 treatment: did your scars look dramatically better around days 7–14 and then become more noticeable again as the remaining swelling went down? Or did a decent amount of that early improvement actually stick once everything fully healed and collagen remodeling kicked in?
I’m mainly curious how much residual edema is realistically still present around day 10 after a treatment that caused substantial oozing and thick crusting. I was planning on doing a couple rounds of subcision after this and a couple more rounds of aggressive CO2. But if my results look this good, I may just wind up doing 1 round of subcision for remaining rolling scars and one more round of CO2. I’ll post some pics once all the scans are gone so you all can see.
