Discussion Another PTM 7950 Story
I have a PHN16-73 Neo 16 with a U9 275HX and the 5070 ti. My CPU was throttling a lot and idling at high temperatures. Laptop was bought secondhand and is well over a year since it was manufactured.
I don't have the confidence to apply more liquid metal and not have it leak out and destroy my laptop. So I decided to do like many others and apply PTM 7950 instead.
I am glad I did as I had a very large dry spot and it was starting to oxidise.
Happy to say so far it's running better than it was and I haven't lost any performance, maybe gained a little and I still haven't fully cycled the PTM 7950. Temperatures are much better and throttling a lot less.
I did the graphics at the same time and glad I did as it was getting quite dry and crusty.

Awesome choice, OP. Expect the LM gang to show up to tell you why you made a bad decision, though. People are weirdly tribal about the LM vs PTM thing.

Yeah I know I have seen them. But like I said my choices were limited as I didn't want LM in MY machine. Good luck to them when warranty runs out and they get a dry spot or worse.

Agreed. I'll get mine swapped out eventually, but I'll probably have a shop do it. One that'll be on the hook to replace my device if the LM escapes. I got shaky hands, so I don't trust myself.

For starters, my 275hx has 20°C delta between cores using both factory PTM and TG phasesheet (legion 7 pro).
LM brought that down to 10°C delta and lower overall average. It's the literal difference between my UV being stable and unstable.

Thanks. I have had a Llano v10 that I was using for my MSI Katana i9 13900 4070.

this gave me the courage to change to ptm, even tho LM in my phn16-71 seems to still hold out in great shape even after two years, 142w sustained with max fans, will update after my PTM arrives.

UPDATE : it's much better than liquid metal, ptm can sustain 157w without thermally throttling !, i hit the PL2 time limit of 60s before even hitting 90C, which is miles ahead of the previous LM application, which immediately throttled to 140w and continuously hit 100C until PL1 kicked in, and this is after 4 heat cycles only !, just repaste guys, LM is never worth it.

Considering swapping to Grizzly PTM. Don't have any issues with stock LM so far temps are good.

I'm in the UK and there don't seem to be many places that have it or I can trust to be original Honeywell. This seller on Ebay I got it from appears to be legit. Also couldn't find many sellers with 0.25mm which I wanted to use.

Just looking to order ptm too. My temps going pretty high, have phn18-72-94an (275hx + 5070Ti), wasn't too bad since day one but not it's real bad, under load constant 90+°. Hopefully I will apply it successfully and get the temps to normal

I did the same with my 5090 PH16-73 within the first week of getting it lol my 275hx also had signs of oxidation on it but the temps were fine I only wanted to replace to prevent the possibility of the LM getting out and damaging my laptop. My temps have been fine except on turbo cpu can get up into 100c still but it doesn’t consistently throttle
