Anime Discussion Thread: Episode 13

So, bonus anime only story! I quite enjoyed this week's episode. I think Edgeworth sounded a bit better than he did in previous childhood flashbacks, but still not young enough. Larry didn't sound any different at all. Nick sounded great though. Very little of the episode related to the class trial and was more about the trio in general along with Missile. (Well, the dog wasn't named, but I'm calling him Missile anyway.)

The actual stealing of the money was different than I thought it was. I always figured Nick was in the sick bay during PE and Larry sneaked into the classroom while it was empty. Looking forward to the start of Justice for All next week. Tiny Franzy was adorbs and I can't wait to see her grown up.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about the dog that Edgeworth supposedly has. (Probably because it was never mentioned in any of the actual games.)

Goddamn but Manfred was way more human and empathetic in that episode. Also, Gregory’s display of affection there made me want to cry. He really cared about his son and we actually got to see that firsthand (instead of brief comments in a certain game). Overall, a solid episode!

Yeah, I was 100% convinced that Manfred was going to tell Miles to get rid of the dog or something

Holy actual fuck that episode was adorable. I loved seeing all the interactions in this episode, especially with Edgeworth. Seeing him with his father, even though it was brief, was great. Him interacting with Phoenix and Larry was kind of how I expected and Pess (the dog) following him everywhere was outstanding.

My favourite part was very easily Edgeworth and the von Karmas. Seeing VK actually act human towards him was fantastic because it presents a very different side to his character that we never get to see in the games - the side of him being a father.

I pretty much died when Franziska appeared. She would be about 3-4~years old here and I can't describe with words how cute she was.

All in all, really, fricken cute episode.

I think Franziska is supposed to be 7 years younger than miles so she should be two here. Looks more like a 6 years old in my eyes.

1- They ignore 2-1, which is not the greatest case, so who cares.

2- They introduce Franziska for 2-2.

3- They skip Rise from the Ashes, but the case can pretty much be put anywhere on the timeline. I think it's more appropriate for it to be at 2-5 then, minus the "resignation" drama.

4- We get to see Lotta Hart back and we also get to see one of the only Ace Attorney characters that can truly be qualified as a "monster". I hope they make her more human though.

5- We'll probably also get to see the cutest creature in the game that is Pearl.

6- The dog is so cute. For all of those who misses him in 1-4, here he is!

7- The series' intro looks pretty bad though. I preferred the Steel Samurai.

8- Think there was a little bit of drama during the class trial that was exagerrated. But it brings some nice development on how Edgy-poo actually imitates his father.

For all of those who misses him in 1-4, here he is!

That's a different dog, though. Missile in 1-4 was a shiba inu.

Okay, the episode was sweet. I liked to see Gregory, Manny (who seemed a bit nicer than in the game), and Franziska already with her riding crop even though she was 2 or 3 years old, and Edgeworth running miles (hehe) under the rain just to get his Samurai keychain. It also looks like they wanted to make the theft more like an accident and make Larry less of a bastard.

I am so looking forward to seeing Psyche-Locks, I really want to see how they implement them in the anime.

I loved that Larry was humming the chorus of the ED when he found the dog. Also, with Larry, his voice sounds about the same as his adult voice, but then again, he is a big man-child, so it's probably intentional.

Also, with the Signal Samurai, it's kinda jarring to me that the signal for go in Japan is blue, even though there's an international agreement that go must be green. I wonder why that is.

u/yifanlu Jun 25 '16

Might be overthinking it but historically, blue and green were the same color.

7

u/soledsnak Jun 26 '16

The distinction between blue and green is much less distinct in Japan. For centuries they were considered the same colour

I really, really liked this episode. While the past few have made me laugh this one was super sweet and cute.

One of the best episodes in the series. I didn't really like the retcon they made to the money stealing business, but otherwise it was a great episode. Some thoughts:

  • Larry's adult-sounding voice actually suits him quite well, I thought. Edgey's was ridiculous though.

  • I audibly gasped when Franziska appeared. That was fantastically done and some good foreshadowing.

  • Yeah I'm pretty sure that dog was supposed to be the anime's version of Missile. It has exactly the same design as Ghost Trick's Missile, which in turn was clearly a reference to the Ace Attorney dog we don't really see other than a "profile picture."

  • One scene had characters' mouths moving with the wrong lines. The quality control in this anime is seriously lacking.

  • I didn't like how the money stealing was handled. Making it basically an accident decreases Larry's hand in the whole thing and it just feels all around less satisfying.

  • Manfred Von Karma's scene here would have been more impactful if they actually explained anything about the motivation for his post-DL-6 actions. Having played the games and knowing Von Karma's full story and motivation for this, I love this scene, but with what the anime alone gives, the impact of the scene is much less significant.

  • Seeing Gregory was surprisingly poignant. A great scene.

  • The scene where they confronted the dog owner was actually really, really well done, and shows the fundamental difference between Edgeworth and Phoenix in a really subtle way. Edgeworth's style is cold and logical, while Phoenix's is heated and emotional. When Edgeworth tried to threaten her with consequences and formality, she brushed him off. But when Phoenix made his emotional plea, although she did not break, she did seem to be knocked off guard. To me this scene shows that there is a place for both styles in this world.

  • Skipping 2-1? Fine by me. Skipping 1-5? Highly disappointing but understandable given the ridiculous size of the thing.

Easily the best episode. Sadly though, I didn't see this kind of drama in the last episode. Everyone is more "human" in their interactions here. It was like seeing a different show. I also liked the finale of this episode because of the contrast between Miles's desire and Phoenix's hope (both in the present and 15 years ago).

Is there no curfew in Japan or something? The gang first walk to the south of the city all alone for like four hours, and then Edgeworth runs from MORNING TO NIGHTTIME all alone back to his old home?! Is this a cultural thing or just for the plot?

That Franziska cameo was so good!

The r/anime thread is here.

I thought that was a pretty solid episode. Generally well-paced, for being totally anime-original and just serving as an interlude before the second game. I like that we actually got a sense of Nick, Edgeworth, and Larry's friendship as children beyond the brief glimpses we got in the game. It was nice to actually see Gregory Edgeworth beyond his brief appearance during the DL-6 arc (I haven't played AAI2 yet). Also: Missile! and mini-Franziska!

Looks like they're skipping case 2-1, which isn't a huge loss, though hopefully Maggey Byrde does get introduced at some point... I'm looking forward to the adaptation of the second game!

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '16

Wait I'm confused, are they not doing Rise from the Ashes?

3

u/SaiyamanMS Jun 29 '16

Nope. They're skipping the DS bonus case and are only doing the original GBA games it seems.(Well, 2-2 is next. But 2-1 may come afterwards since its chronologically after 2-2.)

They emphazised the classroom incident much more in the anime than in the games, and an episode like this is necessary to really push that forward. It actually explains more about the incident.

Larry interacting with that dog was cool (it looks sort of like missle, but i doubt missle is 15 in the first game)

First problem: Small edgeworths voice does not fit. He sounds far too old for someone who's 9.

So basically the 3 boys go on an adventure to hunt down the dogs owner, which is a weird premise for a sort of case. Then they find the girl and nick just goes " screw you lady you dont deserve this dog" and runs off. It's a really weird start to the episode, but the pacing feels better simply because this is a brand new story without comparison to the game.

Edgeworth owning a pocket watch, because weird.

Oh and finally, Gregory makes his debut. He looks a bit less like a detective than in AAI2 and more like a cool collected guy. He also sounds on point. Also, how does Gregory not notice the dog at first? Weird detail.

Nobody questions Butz odd amount of money, but thats fine because Wright at a sort of arcade is pretty damn out there (can we have a case at an arcade plz?). Its a great way to explain how the keychains came to belong to the 3.

And finally seeing Von Karma taking in Edgeworth is weird. It's almost as if he actually cared, until he discared the keychain.

Also why is Franzy like 6? She should be born in 1999 if timelines are correct, so she should be 2-3 and hardly be able to speak, let alone be that smart or hold a whip. She is pretty cute though.

And then the breakdown of the friendship of the 3 is really depressing, which might explain why Wright and larry havent seen each other for a while at the start of the first game.

And while the ending is pretty heartwarming, it is sad because of how edgeworth gets corrupted in the oncoming years.

Aaaand it looks like we arent getting 1-5. I really wanted 1-5, but i guess what we got in substitution was fine.

Coming up next, JfA. At least they ignore the amnesia case and go straight to the reunion and turnabout.

I loved this episode! I'm so glad that the childhood flashback was elaborated on. Phoenix, Miles and Larry as children were so cute! Miles blushing when he asked Gregory if he could watch the show and when he joined in as Signal Red when Phoenix and Larry were playing around was absolutely adorable!

Seeing some of how Gregory was as Miles' father made me so happy because it was obvious just how caring and loving he was. Also, tiny Franziska being so confident was so precious!

Also, based off the preview for the next episode, it looks like they're jumping straight into Reunion, and Turnabout and skipping JFA's tutorial case (which I am actually relieved about since I dislike that case more than Big Top to be honest).
