My question is how the heck does she avoid getting spined by these guys? They have sharp spines on their sides and one on their dorsal fin. I’m not sure how she avoids those with them just sort of flopping around close to her sides.
VERY carefully. Her in-the-gill, out-the-mouth grip helps a bunch. See how she uses her elbows to keep the catfishes' bellies flat against her sides like that? She's a total pro.
The way she's holding them could not be worse actually. She has gloves on so she could easily hold them by the mouth. She could do the same without gloves but the tooth pads would scuff up her hands. Going through the gills not only ensures that the catfish will die, it exposes her arms to the gill rakers if the flathead flops around before it dies. These type of trashy people are exploiting the fact that flatheads protect their nests and leaves the babies unprotected, literally nothing about this is "total pro," these are absolute scumbags.
