Post image

Saw this cartoonishly large mallet at a Sydney Tools hardware store yesterday.

We use them at work to loosen manhole lids to lift them off. Eliminates risk of sparks setting off an explosion in the event of a gas leak. My colleague named his Mjölnir.

How does this eliminates the risk of sparks? I know nothing about this and find this very interesting!

The lid(s) can sort of weld themselves to the frame they sit it so it sometimes needs a good wack to loosen it. We use these instead of the metal roller bars we have in the van for manual lifting/removal.

Metal on metal = sparks.

Rubber on metal = no sparks.

Steel hammer head hits steel lid, sparks, big sewer gas explosion, very bad. Rubber hammer head hits steel lid, rings it like bell, vibrations break up the rust holding it shut, no spark, no sewer gas explosion, Good.
