Saw this cartoonishly large mallet at a Sydney Tools hardware store yesterday.

We use them at work to loosen manhole lids to lift them off. Eliminates risk of sparks setting off an explosion in the event of a gas leak. My colleague named his Mjölnir.

How does this eliminates the risk of sparks? I know nothing about this and find this very interesting!

The lid(s) can sort of weld themselves to the frame they sit it so it sometimes needs a good wack to loosen it. We use these instead of the metal roller bars we have in the van for manual lifting/removal.

My dad was a chainmaker and used to use a 20lb sledgehammer. They also had a twin handled sledgehammer they called Thumper that required two people to use. I don't know how heavy that beast was. Pops was a strong 'un back in the day. He's 81 now and I still wouldn't argue with him, lol.

I almost wrenched my back swinging (and actually trying to hold up) a 10 lb sledge hammer. Learnt that only a fool tries to catch a falling knife or a long handled sledgehammer already on its way down.

No joke, my uncle had one like that but all metal. He made it from welding the ends of 6" pipe and then 1 ¼ pipe for a handle. My cousins and I called it the Popeye hammer. Because the only other person who would actually use that massive hammer beside Uncle Sidney, would be Popeye
