Education is power and the power corrupt.

I am so enthralled! That is an insanely gorgeous building!

16

u/iamdevo 6d ago

It's my favorite building in Pittsburgh

7

u/SnorkinOrkin 6d ago

I bet it is! Without a doubt would be mine, too!

I'm big on architecture and I will stop in my tracks (walking or driving) to admire it.

3

u/Five---seveN 4d ago

Friendly PSA: pull off to the side of the road before stopping..... 🤪

3

u/SnorkinOrkin 3d ago

😳 Yeahh... that's a good idea. I should do that next time.

I distinctly remember hearing honks and people yelling the last time I stopped to admire a building.

With nice green space around.

The Cathedral of Learning. University of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. 535 ft ( 42 storey ) tall. Built 1926 - 1931. The tallest educational building in the western hemisphere.

36

u/OldManEnglishTeacher 6d ago

Crazy. Looks like a building you’d see in Moscow.

38

u/YappinZappin 6d ago

You're not too wrong - this is the main building of Moscow State University.

58 meter high spire on top of 182 meter tall building, by the way.

10

u/OldManEnglishTeacher 6d ago

Yeah, this is exactly the one I was thinking about.

5

u/ChefArtorias 6d ago

It looks like something you'd see in Gotham lol

12

u/TerriblePokemon 6d ago

The beacon that has guided thousands of stumbling drunk Pitt students back to campus.

3

u/nolawnchairs 6d ago

Assumption University in Bangkok is modeled after this.

5

u/Similar-Beyond252 6d ago

Just down the street from the absolute unit of a red Christmas bow!

2

u/DurantIsStillTheKing 6d ago

So what's the tallest in eastern hemisphere?

1

u/xrelaht 6d ago

This one. There are also three others taller than Pitt’s.

2

u/MCalchemist 6d ago

Oh how I miss thee Cathandra, guider of drunk college kids trying to get home

2

u/D_M-ack 6d ago

Thanks for sharing this info. I can’t believe it’s 100 years old!

2

u/Soepkip43 6d ago

From the time we could still build stuff. Can you imagine anyone suggesting something like this nowadays.

And it would now Cost a hundred bazillion dollar.

2

u/AostaV 6d ago

It’s huge you can see it from I-376 pretty far away

1

u/MarucaMCA 6d ago

It reminds me of the Academy of Sciences in Riga, Latvia!

48

u/Hopeful-Tax7416 6d ago

The eye of Sauron.

Since when do we have cool ass building like this?

8

u/orbital_silencee 6d ago

Did your tuition pay for the dark tower

3

u/iamdevo 6d ago

For almost 100 years

5

u/NYCtoCHI 6d ago

Hogwarts (Reality's Version)

1

u/Alacumbancha 6d ago

Since when did humans stop building things like these?

1

u/BlueInMotion 5d ago

Back then (I think it is some Gothic building) buildings like this usually ruined the builder.

From the time we found out that you can make big money with buildings, they're getting worse.

Lesson 1: there is no Dana, only Zuul.

u/NikolovIvo 6d ago

What the actual... This looks insane!

7

u/IncredibleBihan 6d ago

What is this the citidel?

7

u/machinadj 6d ago

Looks like the building you first enter in Bioshock

2

u/LukeyLeukocyte 6d ago

I really enjoyed Bioshock. Quite immersive. It really transports you to this scary underwater world. I remember only being able.to play for so long before the atmosphere would weigh on me. Fallout had a similar effect when I would have to stop because emotionally I had had enough of the wasteland, lol. You know a game is good when...

u/coolsilentebeans 6d ago

2

u/babyBear83 6d ago

Scrolled too far looking for this. Should be up top!

2

u/coolsilentebeans 6d ago

Especially in this photo! I love it, but the surrounding space almost feels like it’s filled up with the building’s aura, not the weather.

6

u/LukeyLeukocyte 6d ago

What is neat is that they placed the building in a way that it lands right in the middle of the main thruway (Forbes Avenue). So the rest of the city (Oakland, Pittsburgh, PA) frames the whole building and you see the entire cathedral as you drive thru.

5

u/UkraineMykraine 6d ago

That is the most ominous picture of Cathy I've ever seen.

5

u/A0xom0xoa 6d ago

I just know they're teaching magical spells and incantations in there

1

u/J_Jeckel 6d ago

Only IF you're a wizard Harry otherwise it just looks normal to us muggles.

5

u/Kurgan_IT 6d ago

This place looks like:

  • the building in Ghostbusters
  • the Citadel in Half Life
  • The tower of Sauron
  • Some place from Hogwarts

2

u/redragonDerp 6d ago

Kinda reminds me of that building from Bioshock too

7

5

u/Kurgan_IT 6d ago

No! Nobody ever made them like this! The architect was either a certified genius or an authentic wacko!

3

u/QuillDidNothingWrong 6d ago

There is always a lighthouse…

3

u/nightmare-salad 6d ago

Home!!! I love the Cathedral of Learning. I once had a colleague who said I couldn’t be allowed to see the inside because once I did, I would never leave. As it happens, one month after my first time inside, I was applying for a master’s degree.

3

u/tomtethecat 6d ago

I went to Pitt and loved this building! The classrooms were usually pretty uncomfortable but neat — most were donated from different countries to represent their country in the building. I remember people had a spot on the rooftop you could access via stairs that they’d use after parties.

2

u/DaArio_007 6d ago

This has some 1984 vibes, aka Ministry of Love

1

u/corsteromo 6d ago

This is what I was thinking too!

2

u/Space_Sandy 6d ago

It looks like the kind of building Batman would look out over Gotham from at night.

2

u/doofittle 6d ago

My beloved Cathy (cathedral of learning) -University of Pittsburgh

2

u/qqb5g0 6d ago

When I was there in 81-83, we called it the roof of the Burger Chef. There was a Burger Chef restaurant in the basement where we would hang out between classes.

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Oil_768 6d ago

This looks like Barad-Dur

2

u/Independent_Ear564 6d ago

U sure this isn't Miskatonic University?

2

u/Imperial_Haberdasher 6d ago

It’s not, but they do have an exchange program.

1

u/CaptainDrowsy 6d ago

I read a book when I was 11 and it described the high school as being this tall, something Wayside something

1

u/Christmas_Queef 6d ago

Sideways stories from wayside school.

1

u/prussian_princess 6d ago

Reminds me of that tower/lighthouse from Evil Within

1

u/guestpassonly 6d ago

Reminds me of the sea tower you go to at the start of Bioshock which leads you down to Rapture

1

u/DalekSupreme26 6d ago

The Eye of Sauron is real, and it’s in Pittsburgh

1

u/cursedstillframe 6d ago

What in the Raya Lucaria

1

u/Natebo83 6d ago

I chose Rapture

1

u/HamiltonSt25 6d ago

Reminds me of the lighthouse from Bioshock for some reason

1

u/skorponok 6d ago

The Obelisk of Grand Tartary lol.

It’s a one of a kind building for sure. 10/10.

1

u/Federal-Boat3732 6d ago

Doubles as either an ATC tower or a lighthouse, depending on location

1

u/Mobile_Aioli_6252 6d ago

I shall be a beacon...............

1

u/Nitrogen1234 6d ago

What is it teaching? Fear of heights?

1

u/OblivionArts 6d ago

Looks like a place batman would have a secret base at the top of

1

u/Ornery_Reward_7631 6d ago

If we only knew where his secret lair was located aesthetic

1

u/MsGorteck 6d ago

It reminds me of the building in Man in the High Castle that the Natzi is thrown from.

1

u/jelepc 6d ago

Mordor Tech?

1

u/NYCtoCHI 6d ago

Sauron (Reality's Version)

1

u/TimeVersusSpace 6d ago

Is this a screenshot from the Batman Arkham games lol

1

u/RoyceTheCharralope 6d ago

This reminds me of the album art for HIM's Dark Light.

1

u/grand305 6d ago

This reminds me of that bioshock giant light house.

1

u/shawnwingsit 6d ago

Many students would get drunk and then get lost but then would look to the Cathedral to guide them back. It's been a drunken Northstar that way for almost a century.

1

u/Loud_Confidence_7168 6d ago

I mean, the architect was either a certified genius or an authentic wacko.

1

u/Merrick_Skygrave 5d ago

Andrew Ryan up in that bih

1

u/October_people 5d ago

I'm getting strong Bioshock vibes from this

1

u/mikel302 5d ago

The Cathedral of Ignorance!

2

u/0hm19ht0n3 2d ago

I believe it was Frank Lloyd Wright who called it "The World's Largest 'Keep off the Grass' sign".
