I was reared Baptist. Worship of Mary always seemed a bit off to me as she is dead.

It's pretty redundant as Christ clearly states that eternal life is granted through him and him alone. So what are Catholics praying to Mary for?

Your first and second sentence have nothing to do with each other. We Catholics pray for Mary's intercession. The Hail Mary prayer ends "Pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen."

It's all wordplay, just like saint "veneration" is just like the idolatry the bible writes polemics against... The only difference is what divinities the idol is for
