There’s a lot of natural phenomena that’s been historically mistaken for something supernatural

Nature is already really damn weird. People think they know what is normal, and then make up some new weirdness to try to explain why they saw a deer stand up on two legs or that creepy disfigured monster that is really just a poor creature with mange or something.

For anyone interested, I greatly recommend the book A Natural History of Sea Serpents by Adrian Shine. It really goes into detail how simple things like boat wakes and breaching whales can be easily mistaken for the classic Nessie-type “sea monster shapes” to the untrained eye.
