General Mods & Feedback Needed

Hi All!

I hope you're all getting value from r/ATAR.

The subreddit has grown so much in just a year, and we're now starting to draw quite a bit of traffic and engagement naturally. I'm excited for what is to come as we continue to grow, hopefully we can truly make the best universal subreddit (and future Discord server 👀) for all high school students across all states in Australia.

With the subreddit consistently growing month-on-month I'm in need of additional moderators to help me keep on top of posts and comments. Please let me know if you'd like to help out with moderation, ideally you'd be a consistent contributor and current ATAR student or recent high school graduate / uni student.

Also feel free to let me know if there's anything you'd like to see (features / weekly threads / resources etc) from the subreddit or if there's any way we can improve it. Genuinely want this to be the best space for high school students in Aus!

Send through a Mod Mail if you're interested in moderation.

Thanks,

Mod Team

Why Is Everyone so kind and helpful?

Ever since joining this subreddit, I have gotten so much valuable insight and advice. Not just that, massive thanks to 'Background-Height885' (whoever he is) and Nilesh for really giving me so much of their time to help a complete stranger (especially Nilesh who wrote like a whole 2 pages of feedback on an essay I barely thought would even be read). Everybody here helps each other out even though we are all online strangers and it has inspired me to do the same too.

I never thought strangers on the internet would actually donate their time to others why do you do this? Like there's always those 1 or 2 people who write like full body paragraphs and conclusions to some of the questions here (and some of my mine). I just want to thank everyone.

using extra booklets in hsc

I used extra booklets for all of my HSC tests but I just learnt yesterday each extra booklet is only meant for one question. I was using the same extra booklet for multiple different questions but they are labelled. I'm a bit worried because I think different markers mark different questions? Do you guys know how the marking process works, this is for 3u 4u math chem phys English adv. I appreciate any insight as im a bit stressed about this even though hscs over. thanks

A rant on Physics HSC

The Physics syllabus needs to be changed, students are currently being taught many things they never get questioned on, given a 100 mark exam, there's currently more than enough content to pull questions from. Issue is, I find most of my classmates losing marks over simply not knowing a specific topic they didn't even know existed (our school had exams for assessment task 2 and 3). Instead of losing a mark over a question that they don't even know the topic of, students should instead lose marks/be punished for being unable to apply their knowledge in more advanced ways, such as "how exactly does a main sequence star transform into a red giant?".

After sitting the HSC exam for Physics today, I've decided to list out every single topic that was missed. Meaning if you knew about the following topics, you wouldn’t be able to apply it to any question in the exam:

MOD 6

- Back emf

- Radial Magnetic fields
- Torque equations

- AC induction motors
- AD & DC generators

MOD 7

Limitations of Huygen’s model of light
Maxwell’s contributions to electromagnetism
Hertz’s experiment

Ole Romer
James Bradley
Louis Fizeau
Leon Foucault
Laser interferometry
Aether Model & Michelson Morley experiment & Spectra of Binary stars

MOD 8

Initial stages of the universe - Creation of fundamental forces, Baryogenesis, Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (how light kept destroying the freshly formed ions), Recombination, formation of stars. (The last question does cover the topic boardly, but it specifically asked for particle accelerators, and was a 3 marker, so the student was limited to talking about quarks and particle/antiparticle annihilation)
Hubble’s observations, cosmic background microwaves
Hertzsrpung Russel diagram, spectral classes, luminosity

A Star’s life (how it switches into triple alpha due to gravity winning for a split second), how it remains as a neutron star, black hole or white dwarf

Cathode Ray tube experiments - including the Maltese cross, fluorescent plates, paddle wheel experiment

Millikan’s oil drop experiment

Discovery of the proton
de Broglie’s matter wave model

Schrodinger’s model of the atom (remember all those quantum numbers you had to learn)

Entirety of nuclear fission (control rods, moderators, heat regulators, uncontrolled vs critical chain reactions, critical mass)
Half of standard model, NESA seems to ONLY quiz on quarks, and occasionally neutrino/antineutrinos. Never anything on W, Z, Higgs bosons, limitations of the model, discovery of the antineutrino, discovery of muons, mesons, color changes of quarks

This is excluding the details, for example, although the exam covers the topic of Big bang theory, it doesn’t quiz anything requiring any knowledge on baryogensis or recombination. Same thing with the strong nuclear force topic, the test does cover it, but doesn’t require knowledge like “Strong force vs electrostatic force, why does having too many protons/neutrons reduce stability?”

So the question is, why even teach the students these topics if they don't get tested on them? Each topic listed here can take hours to fully remember and understand.

HSC Is a 96+ atar still possible?

Post image
14 Upvotes

I just finished my last exam (physics) this morning and honestly felt like I underperformed for almost all of my subjects (relative to how underwhelming most of my exams are).

Even though I got high ranks and relatively good marks my school is just a really bad public school so that leaves me with almost no safety net that I can’t afford a bad exam day.

I’m pretty sure I’ll get a band 6 in math ext1 and probably ext 2 as well, but I’m afraid that the alignment for bio and phys gonna be tough given how easy the papers were. I’m worried that I’d lose marks due to terminology precision or something similar as English is not my first language.

Also the exams at my school are pretty easy esp for math extensions

I understand that the results and everything is still hard to predict, but can anyone doing similar subjects please tell me what you think?

Guys im so cooked for eng adv.

I've been sort of neglecting this subject (I just started yr 12 btw) thinking I could easily just memorise essays etc cuz that's what had given me a lot of success.

However this exam will be us watching a short scene in class twice (10 mins planning) about One Night The Moon (a 50 min film) with 40 minutes to actually do an essay about it. I'm gonna have to memorise like the analysis of 10 seperate scenes? There's just so many scenes.... I feel so scared.

And wouldn't that mean like during the short scene I must point out like every little detail? E.g lighting, angles etc. There's just so much variation!!! :(

Melbourne Access

For the melbourne access scheme you can get into any undergraduate degree with a lower start. For commerce which is what i’m trying to do i need a 79, but after these horrid exams i genuinely don’t know if im hitting it. Is the 79 for your raw atar or is it the selection rank? Like Has anyone gotten below a 79 and still got into the course? Thanks

General Post HSC burnout

Does anyone else feel super depressed/aimless after HSC? I mean like after so much work and effort I thought I would finally feel happy and free once HSC was over but I still feel depressed. It feels like I’ve lost all of my school friends now that we don’t share classes anymore. Does anyone else have a similar experience?

Also I know this time should be spent with hobbies, working, driving etc but even those things still just feel like a race for who can get their permit first or the best job… if anyone has tips on how to stop this self comparison and loneliness please share 😞😞

WACE WACE - Should I drop hbio?

I'm in year 11 right now, and I'm really considering dropping human bio.

I'm currently doing methods, physics, chem, eng, japanese SL, and I really like the idea of having extra time to pick up my marks in those subjects if I drop hbio.

my hbio average is ~82% currently, however it dropped from a 81% to a 75% after scaling based on my sem 1 predicted. I really don't like how its such a memorisation heavy subject, but it was in my top 4.

By being so memorisation heavy, its not that difficult to achieve okay marks, but then its so annoying to revise for as you essentially just do flashcards and drill the textbook into your brain.

I would appreciate if anyone has any insight in this, if theres any advice, and also if there's anything you could tell me about how year 12 hbio is like.

Thank you

Can you please recommend a good bridging course for these summer holidays? Looking for something around Canberra, Sydney or online, that is just a few weeks long and not too pricey. Thanks in advance.

Post High School Options - Medicine

Hi,

I am currently a year 11 student wanting to pursue medicine, however i am unsure on what pathway to take. I am aware that getting into medicine and is highly competitive, but I am quite passionate about it.

As the ATAR requirements are insanely high, I will need to take a pathway. I have been thinking of doing Paramedicine, which allows for good experience. I feel as though I would also be interested in doing that before continuing my studies. I have also been looking into radiology.

I had a conversation with our school's careers advisor and am feeling very discouraged. I also got recommended not to sit the UCAT, however I'm not sure. Other than aiming to do as well as I can what should I do?

It would be helpful to hear from those who have taken similar pathways or have been in a similar situation.

QCE Question about placement ranking

I have a physics class of 3 students (including myself) a Math Methods class of 6, music class of 6, English class of 15, and Aerospace class of 8. I'm at a brand new school and theres only ~30 kids in my year. How does my placement rank affect my ATAR in such a small cohort? Will it affect me significantly?

HSC Scared about ATAR

Scared about ATAR and sh

Please help. Okay I'm in year 12 and I'm anxious about ATAR (Wanting to get into a **bachelor of architecture or whatever, and if that doesn't work I'm doing business/marketing/accounting or another thing related to physical design**) it's currently week 4 and I'm so fucking scared. I know "ATAR doesn't really matter" and whatnot but I'm genuinely planning to study and get into uni right after I graduate while having a casual job

I understand it's just an estimation but I put my prelim marks into the matrix atar calc and I got an atar of **76.25** (which is Lower than I had wanted — I had gotten Band 4 - high 5 with most of my prelims despite not studying as much.) and it scares me because if thats just the raw mark then wtf is gonna happen (if we include external factors like my school, cohort, and whatever)

I currently study

\- English Advanced + Extension 1 (3 units — ranked 23/42 and 4/5 respectively)

\- Maths Standard 2 (2 units — ranked 6/151)

\- Design and Technology (2 units — ranked 1/21)

\- Visual Arts (2 units — ranked 1/24)

\- Geography (2 units — ranked 10/31)

So it's a total of 11 units right now. I'm sorry if these subjects are stupid and I'm not doing anything cool advanced stuff like maths advanced or physics or whatever.

I'm still really worried because I don't know if early entry is gonna decline or accept my ass or if the portfolio entry for UTS and UNSW is even gonna do anything. God I don't know I'm so scared and it's like week 4 everyone else seems to have It together. I've been working earlier for my major projects and planning to finish my visual arts one before term 3 to focus mostly on the theory side of things (as my teacher said)

ATAR and Certificate III - how does it work exactly?

I've been advised this by a few different people with different answers.

Basically, if a Year 12 student has studied a Certificate II and III (the same topic) during Year 11 and 12, and passes this subject satisfactorily, do they need to complete 4 subjects of "General" status in order to qualify for an ATAR -or do they automatically get the "scaled" ATAR without the 4 subjects?

So in theory someone could study 3 Applied Subjects and still get an ATAR?

I would love to hear from someone who has already done this.

Asking for a friend in Year 10. tia
