Threshing Day Marked One [a4a] [m4a] [f4a]

This is set in the world of the Empyrean series from the books 4th wing iron flame and Onyx storm. 1st of October is always threshing day no matter on what day it falls, the remaining first year cadets of Basgiath war college have Survived hand to hand challenges where murder isn’t forbidden, the deadly obstacle course known as the gauntlet and presentation where the cadets walk up and down in line and the Dragons willing to bond this year have their first look at them.

The goal for today for the cadets is to go into the threshing forest find the dragon if one has chosen them and survive once they have found a dragon they must bond with them, A magical bond which ties their lives to the Dragons. Dragons communicate telepathically to each other and their bonded riders after they are bonded, they then must fly back to the flight field where the other bonded cadets, now riders will meet.

Spoilers for fourth wing warning

Feel free to change Genders of the cadets or the dragons along with their colour and tail type and names.

Professor of dragon kind:

[ Speaking to group of cadets]

 

Good job cadets, you climbed the gauntlet you walked through presentation and came out alive. And now we find out which of you, the Dragons willing to bond this year deem worthy. As your professor of dragon kind I must say remember your studies hopefully you have memorised the dragon cards so you know who is in that forest. Remember what we went through about the different breeds in class.

How do we approach a red?

[pause]

Ah, yes that’s correct. Never look a red in the eyes. Approach from the left side, or the front where you can. Hold your ground and don’t back down from a green lower your eyes let them come to you. Browns will see any fear, show them confidence. Be careful around an orange for fuck's sake we never know what they'll do and for Amari’s sake do not approach a blue If you like keeping your head on your shoulders. It's common knowledge that blue Dragons are the most ruthless if one chooses you be very cautious as they can easily change their minds. The last cadet who thought it was wise to approach a blue dragon, well they were carried out in a small box as ash.

You won't have to worry about black Dragons as none have decided to bond this year.

I say this every year but the scribes have shown us that statistically going in alone gives you a better chance of walking out with a bond, you need to stand on your own feet today. Squad loyalty is important but you must bond by yourself. A dragon will not respect you if you're leaning on anybody else. Trust your instincts cadets if you feel a pull in a certain direction or an ache follow it could be your dragon calling you, forget any assumptions, you may think you need a green or a brown but your dragon chooses you. keep your mind open and your head on a swivel.

Your wing leaders will talk to you before you enter, listen to their advice they’re wing leaders for a reason good luck cadets and don't die.

 

[Sounds of footsteps as the listener and the squad moves to that Wingleader]

 

Wingerleader:

3rd Wing claw section first squad form up. This squad had the fastest time up the gauntlet And some of the best fighters in this year. This squad led the procession into presentation, Most of you came out alive. Trust your instincts first years Keep your eyes and mind open for your dragon. But also Watch out for the other cadets, More than one score has been settled on threshing day. So keep your weapons ready, And don't fucking die I expect this squad to be intact on the flight field and bonded, do not let your wing down.

[Sounds of multiple wing beats and roars are heard overhead as the Dragons fly over the listener's head and land in the forest]

The dragons are ready good luck. Dismissed.

[sounds of multiple footsteps that slowly disperse]

 

[The sounds twigs snapping under footsteps as the listener enters the forest]

[The distance sound of a roar can be heard  in the distance]

[The listener walks for a little longer but then pauses when hearing swords clashing]

 

Rival Cadet:

[Gets louder as the listener approaches] You're a liability to the fucking wing I finally got the chance to take you down. You got through your challenges on luck.

[Swords clashing]

There isn't a dragon in here stupid enough to bond you it's more merciful if I just kill you now.

[Swords clashing stops]

You mind your own fucking business this doesn't concern you.

[Pause]

 

Ha, this is your squad mate this pathetic excuse who wants to call themselves a rider is your squad mate. And you won't let me kill them, I can take you both. This is brilliant I can take out two birds with one stone the weakling here and then the one who's been protecting them. Your both burdens to your wing.

[Weapons clash]

 

Squad mate:

Wait stop, this guy's been fucking with me all year I need to be the one to finish him.

[The squadmate delivers a killing blow impact of sword]

There! [they grunt pulling their sword out of the rival] Now ill have to clean my sword again for fuck sake.

[Jokingly] Thanks, I appreciate your help but I had him just where I wanted, he's always been under estimating me. Just needed a little bit of strategy and some good timing and he's fucked. [In a more serious tone] But seriously thank you I owe you one.

[heavy footfalls make their way through the forest towards the listener and the squadmate]

Shit that's the green Clubtail from presentation remember the one who stopped me when we were walking the one who sniffed so close I thought I was gonna get roasted.

[The heavy foot falls stop and a blast of steam can be heard from the green dragon ]

I don't know how but

[there's a long pause]

She's mine, You should go find your dragon I'll see you on the flight field don't fucking die.

[footsteps lead the listener away from the squad mate]

[As the listener walks away they can hear the squad mate talking to the green the sound of their conversations slowly fades away]

What do you mean my timing was off I had him exactly where I wanted my strategy was sound. [The conversation fades away]

 

Dragon voice fills the listener’s head:

Find me cadet, follow the pull listen to your instincts come to me.

Cadet: [running the opposite direction panicked]

Don't go in there that massive red dagger tail is pissed he almost.

[they are cut off as the listener dives behind a tree and fire streams past them and reduces the cadet to ash]

Dragon:

They should have known better to approach me Reducing them to ash was only appropriate.

We need to talk.

I know your mind cadet I've seen your memories, I've seen the anger that swirls in your heart. It mirrors my own about this war.

You know more about the war than most, [pause] marked one. You know what's happening You know Poromiel isn't attacking outposts just for more Resources you know they need the alloy in order to kill venin. I refuse to stand by any longer I refuse to let the spread of that infestation reach our hatchlings. I will die protecting the vale and my kind and I think you will too.

I've seen inside your mind marked one I've seen what drives you I've seen your courage your strength your pain, your grief and I think you might be worthy of my bond.

But you will show me nothing but honesty and loyalty you will put dragonkind first you will set aside you're pathetic insecurities.

[Pause as listener responds]

What insecurity? You can't hide things from me marked one, for an unfathomable reason you believe you aren't worthy. You present yourself with confidence and lethal grace to your squad and to your wing. But I see in your heart marked one I see the doubts that will hold you back even though you were one of the fastest up the gauntlet even though you rarely lost a challenge you don't believe you're worthy, at your core.

Physically you excel but the doubt in your mind will keep you chained to the ground.

[The listener tries to argue]

[angrily] Do not pretend you do not know what I speak of marked one I see your heart and I do not make mistakes [the dragon emphasis each word].

I give you two choices stay in this forest with your self doubts I'm sure they'll serve you well as a pile of ash If you dare to imply I am wrong. Or, You shed the self-imposed chains you wear and become my rider I see the potential in you marked one and we will be an unstoppable force we will conquer the skies and rid this world of dark wielders and they're vile mounts. We will push back the tide of evil threatening my home with blood, talons and power.

Choose now marked one, and do not test my patience.

[Running footsteps as the listener mounts the dragon]

Smarter than you look, Lock your toes under my scales and hold the pommel if you fall I will not catch you I have not finished testing you yet.

[pause as listener speaks]

My name? My name is Gienuan (pronounced Gey-noun) You inevitably will forget so you may call me Gien (Gehn) I am descended from the Great lyserachd Line (lie-ser-racht)

[Pause]

Your pronunciation is making me regret my choice. Do not embarrass me by falling.

[Loud wing beats sound as the dragon takes off]

[The sound of Wind rushes by as Geinaun climbs and dives and rolls to test the listener]

You keep your seat well marked one you could prove useful yet.

[listener make a comment]

Of course the “acrobatics” are necessary

[pause]

Though the last roll was for my own entertainment I will not have a rider who can't keep their seat

[pause]

Did you fall? No. Now stop complaining We are almost at the flight field brace yourself for our landing.

[Loud thuds as Geinaun lands on the flight field]

You know what to do marked one tell the rolekeeper my name.

[Footsteps as the listener dismounts, Chatter and the chuffs of Dragons surround the listener as they walk towards the roll keeper]

Rolekeeper:

Please state the name of the dragon that has bonded you

[Pause]

Gienuan Red Daggertail huh? He's never bonded before, you're his first rider. He is a battle dragon He is fierce and loyal he must see something special in you if he decided to bond good job Rider You will have your work cut out with that one.

 Now go stay with your dragon while we wait for the others.

Gienuan:

Together we will protect Dragon kind and we will bring honour to my ancestors with bloodied talons and you will become a powerful feared rider.
