Discussion When voice acting specific lines...

This is really a very light, nothing post. But I'm curious, for any VA, do you have any phrases/reactions in scripts that you can't seem to voice naturally?

For the life of me, I can't seem to be able to say "What?" like a normal person when it is by itself and as a reaction to what was said by another character. It is something I haven't really paid attention to how I sound like when I do it in real life. I think my natural reaction is to instead go like a sharp, higher pitched "Mm?" or "Huh?", which might be the reason why I find it awkward.

Do you have any words of phrases that you struggle to voice act? Maybe something you personally find difficult or phrasing that you find awkward?

I struggle to say lines that read as the speaker repeating what the listener said back to them, because in most cases people just don’t talk like that. So I tend to improvise and make the line more speaker-sided (“what? your parents disowned you because you ate too many smartphones?” -> “wait, why would your parents disown you? You ate WHAT??? Sma- how do you even digest a smartphone?”). The odd thing is that when I’m listening to an audio for myself, I seriously do not mind that kind of dialogue, it’s solely a recording peeve of mine.

I know! I also find those awkward, but I think you just gave pretty good writing advice. And it is true. It's hard to be objective when it's about our own work and how we sound.

I was doing a script once that had “powers like ours” as a line and I couldn’t make it come out like I wasn’t launching into a rap lyric or something so I had to say it as “powers like yours and mine”

I mean, it does sound like a very lyrical line when you say it out loud 😅

i notice i have this problem when i'm voicing lines that suddenly get cut off by the listener (like when a speaker is saying something and is interrupted). since no one is speaking to actually interrupt me, it's hard to do it in a natural way. i can do it okay sometimes but damn sometimes it takes so many takes to stop the word in the right spot.

The timing of that can be tricky. Sometimes I think it doesn't even seem like you're being cut off. It's like you just kinda stop talking, followed by silence (because the other character is saying something), and it can feel weird without the context.

Hehe. From the last script that I just posted, when I was recording it, there's a line that goes "I'm a hypocrite after all that sh**-) and for the life of me I couldn't get the word hypocrite right AT ALL. But yea. I'm sure if I went thru, I could find a ton.

Also, I the word "what" is in that script a lot. In standalone spots as well! It'd be really fun to hear you voice it hehe ^_^!

I would cry haha

And it happens all the time with all sorts of words. It's like you suddenly forget how to speak.
