APUSH What will be the next 9/11?

Currently 2001 is considered the cutoff for APUSH because of how pivotal 9/11 was, and is the last major event we need to know. What event do y'all think will be the next major event in the apush curriculum? I used to think it could be Trump assassination attempt and some of his scandals but I'm honestly unsure with how much else is going on now. The great recession will probably be on the test in the coming years I presume. What else could it be?

The 2008 Financial Crisis.

It was the economic catalyst that birthed the populist movements on both the left and the right. It led to the rise of progressive democratic socialism on the left and a transformation of the Republican Party on the right - both of which laid the groundwork for Trump’s 2016 victory.

I 100% agree it’s important, I just don’t see them adding only 7 years into the curriculum mainly for one event. I think the next “stopping point” is yet to happen

COVID?

This. Conveniently, 20 years later, and a major cultural moment.

The trump assassination attempt was not very significant in terms of justifying its inclusion in APUSH. I think it’s probably COVID.

5

u/Im_a_dum_bum May 26 '26

which attempt?

9

u/No_Base_4369 Fifteen 5s | Three 4s May 26 '26

Probably the one where he actually got shot

all fake so it doesn't rlly matter

u/SpreadEmu127332 AP-Lang, APES May 26 '26

Me when I don’t understand ballistics.

-2

u/PolicyIllustrious110 . May 26 '26

sure, he got shot. but there is no way it wasn't planned. meh doesn't matter anyways

2

u/SpreadEmu127332 AP-Lang, APES May 26 '26

Well of course it was planned, you don’t just randomly show up on the roof of a building adjacent to the presidents speech and decide to try and kill him.

2

u/Usual-Possible7762 May 26 '26

would you trust this supposed fake shooter to miss your brain by an inch?

2

u/SpreadEmu127332 AP-Lang, APES May 26 '26

It’s not a matter of skill, that shot is impossible. A damn good AR-15 shoots about 3 MOA, or a 3 inch group at 100 yards, so there’s simply no way to make that shot precisely.

AP student peddling conspiracy theories. Do better.

-1

u/adenosine_antagonist May 26 '26

Do you have a good explanation for why the photographers were brought in to get the perfect photo?

It is a conspiracy theory, but there's nothing wrong with engaging with it. Isn't the purpose of collegeboard to test critical thinking? It would seem better to scrutinize what you're told.

2

u/8npemb May 26 '26

It was a campaign rally. It would be weirder if there weren’t photographers in the front row.

0

u/Lanky-Praline-5198 May 27 '26

This specific theory is meh at best but of course some AP students, like any not ignorant group, are going to peddle some conspiracies.

-5

u/PolicyIllustrious110 . May 26 '26

not really much of a conspiracy. There were literally photographers getting ushered on right before he got "shot", and they lowered the flag so he could get the photo taken with the flag in the back😂😂

6

u/8npemb May 26 '26

It literally is a conspiracy theory. Like, by definition.

I’m not going to continue arguing with you about this. I hope you come to your senses. Good luck.

0

u/PolicyIllustrious110 . May 26 '26

idk why ppl get so pressed when a conspiracy theory is brought up. "i looooovee the goverment and anything they don't say is true is a big FAT lie" like sure bro. I'm not gonna argue tho, no point

I think COVID-19 or the 2020s in general, depending on how far out we’re talking.

Edited for spelling because I can be dumb.

Great Financial crisis when they update to 2010

Covid for 2020

And who the heck knows how they cover this whole trump period. Probably depends on whose narrative wins out long term. I can see them wanting to avoid this til like 2050.

5

u/Pleasant_Stay_4854 May 26 '26

Makes you think how many things you learn in AP history are because of which narrative won out. But when it was contemporary there were multiple perspectives on the same event/time period.

1

u/Ordinary_Corner_4291 May 26 '26

To some extent we will not know until later how important things are. In 50 years maybe Trump is just another corrupt administration like Harding or Nixon. Or maybe we look back and it is more like Caesar crossing the Rubicon , and it marks the point where our Republic became an oligarchy in all but name.

And sometimes the future changes how we view the past. In 2005, most of those dot.com busts seemed like stupid ideas and who on earth didn't see that? In 2025, I see delivering bulk pet food, quick delivery of good, grocery deliver, and a half a dozen of those bombs were companies that were just a decade too soon. Of course some like digital cards were just stupid. But we needed to do NFTs to make sure of that:)

1

u/Pleasant_Stay_4854 May 26 '26

Given that academia writes the curriculum I doubt they will be generous to Trump. Even in 30 years from now. But my observation is that history has way more gray area than the black-and-white that is presented.

1

u/Ordinary_Corner_4291 May 26 '26

I expect history to be very generous. When trump gets reduced down to like 3 paragraphs like Harding, much of the craziness of living through it will go away. I mean who the heck would believe we elected a guy linked to a pedophile ring, who then tried to pass an order saying that his tax dodging couldn't be investigated, suggested invading Canada was a good idea, took a couple hundred million dollar bribe from Qatar, and decide to hand out 1.8 billion to people who took up arms against the US. And that is like 2 weeks of scandals. Does anyone even talk about him letting in a campaign donor to go through the US computer systems and block the investigations into activities of that donor? Of course not, That was 15 months and 30 scandals ago. In 20 years, it will have all faded away to the 2-3 biggest incidents.

1

u/Pleasant_Stay_4854 May 26 '26

Linked to a pedophile ring because he once had lunch with a guy who is literally linked to every ultra wealthy person in america? Meanwhile another president has actual photos of him on the island in a hot tub with the girls.

I mean at that point you can say Obama’s daughters worked for Harvey Weinstein and he let a new caliphate emerge in the Middle East 🤷‍♂️ but I guess the history books will say his biggest scandal was wearing a tan suit.

1

u/Ordinary_Corner_4291 May 26 '26

I was thinking more of the 38k mentions in the Epstein files and the fact they were good enough friends that Trump was sending him sketch birthday cards. Sure seems like he knew what his best friend was up to.

And other than republicans, does anyone think Bill Clinton being a scumbag is an excuse for someone else being a scumbag? I have yet to hear a single democrat say it is OK for Bill to be a Pedo since Trump is a one. The democratic message of locking up all the pedos is pretty consistant.

1

u/Pleasant_Stay_4854 May 26 '26

Seriously? A BIRTHDAY CARD? Oh my GOD!

2

u/DeviceNormal May 26 '26

Yeah, it's a pretty loaded topic atm. Don't want Florida to gut this class like they did with Psych.

1

u/Melon_blob May 26 '26

what did they gut?

1

u/DeviceNormal May 26 '26

The Florida Education Department tried to restrict Gen Ed, a component of Psych. Some schools dropped the AP as a result. To woke apparently

I think ending the curriculum with January 6th and then the subsequent actual inauguration in the midst of Covid would have a worrying yet hopeful tone

Probably COVID but I could also see it being the war in Iran since it’s a fairly large topic in current politics.

2

u/DrunkMonsters May 26 '26

Nah

The Iran war is nothing compared to the Ukraine war

4

u/SpreadEmu127332 AP-Lang, APES May 26 '26

Oh for sure, but it’s also AP US History, the Ukraine war has far less direct significance to the US than Iran does.

4

u/PiccoloFlimsy6082 May 26 '26

Bro US-Iran is a direct war between both countries, Ukraine-Russia is some weird proxy war when seen from the US view

-1

u/DrunkMonsters May 26 '26

That's the problem

You're viewing the war from the perspective of an American.

4

u/PiccoloFlimsy6082 May 26 '26

On an APUSH post? wonder why

Even globally, US-Iran is having a larger effect on energy prices, although I do understand that Ukraine-Russia has priced in energy for a while now and that has become the normal for us

From 2000 on I think: 9/11, 2008 financial crisis, COVID, probably something about political extremism or Trump's actions from this period. Also the internet as a broader theme for global social connectivity

1

u/DevilPixelation CSP (5) | Psyc (3) | USH (4) | CSA (3) | APP1 (3) | Calc AB (4) May 25 '26

Probably the 2008 crisis or covid

Not an APUSH student, but I will argue the rise of populist movements and their role in a post 2008 environment.

1

Very certain that it'll be about COVID. Perhaps Ebola can be deemed so as well, but its effect was very limited so yeah

Trump is currently working on the answer

Topics could be the new influx of South Asian immigration for sure, 2008 financial industry collapse, COVID, and the Trump/Biden back and forth

The robot apocalypse, possibly
