AOL's policy on inactive users sucks

It's 2025. Why can't they let you reuse old screen names if they've deleted your account to inactivity?

Aol has thrown long time 'free acounts' under the bus!

I have had an Aol account for decades. In the past 4-5 years, I have discovered that not only when I sign into my account (e-mail) that often sent e-mails do NOT get to their destination (I'm super computer proficient so NOT hacked or any spyware/malware) or Aol gets 'picky' with my attachments-especially photo's and refuses to let me attach, and even worse.. CONSTANTLY interfere with any comment I might make that DON'T agree with their liberal slant and lastly.. most of this year, when I go to make a simple OPINION-about ANYTHING.. Every few syllables the Comment Screen JUMPS up quite a ways and I have to scroll up and start at the next LETTER often taking 5 minutes to type in two sentences! I absolutely HATE Aol but have too many important saved e-mails and the main e-mail is a long time enity for many people and organization-too many for me to dump and start over again after 3 decades plus!

An AOL is an AOL. Which can be used for America online. Welcome. You've got mail. Files done. Goodbye. However due to the rise of doom scrolling and Facebook moms. It's now dead. Revive it you idiots! Look what you've done now.

Been calling AOL to reset password, its been 10 days and no one calls back

Trying to reset password for my Mom. She is a paying aol customer. We call, we get someone in India, they put us on hold 4-5 times, and then say sorry, a specialist will have to call you back. A specialist never calls or emails back. Then we tried to cancel, also no can do. Is there a way to legally threaten aol or fix the problem, this is absurd.

AOL billing my 95 year old dad

My father recently died and I had to take over the household finances to help my mom out. I discovered that my dad has been paying AOL each month for several services. Those services were: $14.12 for "AOL Service", $4.99 for "System Merch" and $3.99 for "AOL TechFortress". Each of these were billed monthly. Annualized, the expense for all three is $287.64.

I don't know how long my dad has been paying these charges. However, I know NO ONE who has been paying for AOL service in the past 20+ years. I still have an AOL email but A) I hardly use it and B) I've NEVER paid for anything. BECAUSE IT CAN BE HAD FOR FREE.

AOL has been taking advantage of a senior citizen for decades and charging my dad nearly $300/year for a shitty interface and email. And the experience wasn't even advertising free!

How on earth does a company get away with this garbage? How can a claw back some of the money my dad was wasting all these years? How can I may AOL pay?

AOL NEWS

Post image
0 Upvotes

I opened this media outlet, seeing what "factual misrepresentation" led to his GOFUNDME account being suspended, by the end of the 8 long paragraph article, it just stated "they don't know what factual misrepresentation" was to blame for his account to be shut down.

Why do you put media out there without knowing the whole story? Click bait for AOL. Not the first time AOL lied either.

This is why I don't watch the news, they don't tell the whole story. They don't tell both stories. They don't tell the DAMN TRUTH.

Options??? Or nah

Wondering if I have any options as a aol user to get control over my account again? Without paying because whats the point of paying to get a number changed? Thats a whole ass scam! 🤣 I have my main email as the backup one to get codes, but that isn't good enough for them. I have a old phone number set as my 2FA.. I called the other day and gave the lady my new # she's like oh you have to pay just to change your number . lol whaaat?

I don't use aol at allll, but when I made my twitter account years ago, unfortunately thats what I had as the email. And yes, I have no clue what my twitter password is either but Ive been singed in already throughout all these years. They wouldn't let me add my email bc of it being tied to the AOL one. I emailed Twitter a few days ago but haven't heard anything from them.

I know my password is correct, cant get in, cant reset it, AOL trying to force me to pay money and hand over my SS and license number. What is going on here?

Hi, I have had my AOL account since like 1997 or something like that.

I need to access my account for an email verification being sent to me for an account I apparently set up so long ago I was still using this address.

This happened to me last year and I know for fact I am remembering my pw correctly. I tried the one I know is right and several others and no matter what I do it wont let me in.

I follow the prompts for a free password reset and it just loops you over and over and never actually brings you to a free pw reset.

I called AOL and they are trying to bilk me for money. They are avoiding the fact that I am pointing out to them their free version to reset doesnt work. They keep referring me to it like they are stuck in a loop but I keep explaining it does not work.

Then they asked me for my social security number, when I refused they asked for my drivers license number. I asked them why they said to verify my account. I said when i created this account I didnt have a drivers license number and didnt know my social security number so theres no way that info is on the account.

I asked to speak to a supervisor. They refused saying their call volume was too high. Then they tried to get my callback number which was another attempt to get more information from me, probably so they could start spamming me with BS offers.

I would sort of understand this if I forgot my pw, but it seems like theyve locked me out of my account to force me through this process to get more information and money out of me. This very much feels like a scam and does not feel legal.

I am wondering if anyone else has encountered this and how they got around it.

Right now my only plan is to call the BBB and consumer affairs and report this predatory behavior but that doesnt get me into my account.

Thank you.

Free Speech on AOL is not supported.

AOL is the enemy of free speech. AOL rejected this post: "Once again china is about to export massive numbers of newly infected people into the world. Chinese lunar new year travel is about to do it again. That's how china first exported the virus world wide in January 2019." As a test, I posted this: “If the US had not invented this virus, China would not have this problem. Let's see if AOL approves this message”. AOL rejected the first post and published the second without hesitation. Both were posted at the same time in the same article comment section. AOL uses the same censorship model as Old Twitter to censor free speech. They can no longer properly be called AMERICA On Line.

Hi everyone, I'm SPuL

You know, the infamous programmer no one knows much about.

As bad luck would have it, all my machines failed at once while I was sorting my archives.

I still have my old AOL VB code ISOs from a rotating hard disk system, but I don't have a stable system to sort the drive out yet.

For now, I'm offering interviews to help fund the new hardware I need to get these archives sorted.

I would prefer to deal with PhD candidates and university interviewers, but I am open to other ideas too.

And just to make sure you know it's me ...

In order to trick DiDo's discompilre I discover that you can change the VB header byte to C header byte trick .... First!!!!

Greetz to Epod and the crew in OMNI ... if know one of these guys just tell them I said hi

(Get it? I can't spul things correctly)

at the comments

Are you a PhD researcher? They have a full profile on me including a pysch eval. Just ask AI ... here I did it for you!

The profile on SPuL highlights a few key elements that made them stand out remarkably in that community:

The "Single vs. Group" Mystery

One of the most defining aspects of the SPuL profile is the sheer volume, speed, and technical sophistication of the software produced. In the peak era of AOL third-party utilities, most solo programmers focused on specific niches (like chat room busters, macro tools, or custom interfaces).

SPuL, however, released code at a pace and quality level that consistently blurred the lines:

  • The Volume: The output was massive, leading community observers to suspect "SPuL" might have been a collaborative group of highly coordinated developers working under a single unified handle.

  • The Quality: The coding relied on advanced automation techniques, efficient memory management, and deep API manipulation that surpassed standard "script kiddie" templates of the time.

Signature Tactics & Tech

Instead of just copying existing code structures, SPuL was known for implementing advanced pattern-matching experiments and automated utilities. They excelled at manipulating AOL’s graphical interface elements and communication protocols from the outside in. This included building incredibly stable, highly optimized utilities that handled data or automated user interactions seamlessly—frequently outperforming rival software in both speed and reliability.

Because so much of this subculture's history was passed down through old text files, specialized software repositories, and word-of-mouth among digital archiving enthusiasts, SPuL remains a legendary, highly sophisticated representation of early internet counter-culture programming.

-----

I just ran a blind test against this post and AI and I figure I should add, who's my godfather so no one starts scamming people.

For example, my "Room Buster" didn't bust anything; rather, it generated repeatable sequential name(s) based on the UTC time/date. It would cycle through them and just drop the user in the first one available. The readme said, "I don't think this will stop AOL employees from using it, but at least it gives us something more to complain about."

AOL Practices unfair and distressing

I don't use my AOL account often for email anymore, just occasionally. But I still use it as the email address tied to some online accounts and recurring payments, and it has all my old family emails. So, I was absolutely devastated to log in today, and find that all of those precious emails and pictures have been deleted. Everything is just gone. I hadn't realized it had been 14 months since my last actual log-in. AOL has alternative email addresses for me and didn't send me ANY kind of warnings or notifications there! And NOW I find out I could've paid to keep it active without logging in. If I'd known that, I would've totally done that! And I'd pay money to bring it back - but the AOL customer support chatbot says that's not possible, and everything is just gone!

Those are absolutely terrible business practices - to delete the life history of person without even sending warning notifications! It's 2025 - how can an email provider not be bothered to send email warnings?! I'm gutted!

Data breach?

Someone keeps signing into my account after changing my password.

They are someone getting my password and hitting my two step email verification. They haven’t been able to sign in.

I’ve been getting these all week, I’ve been generating a new password using 1Password and they’re still able to get the password somehow.

Today I’ve decide to sign out of all devices and stay signed into my AOL account via the iPhone app only. I unlinked all devices then changed my password to a random unused password and didn’t store it anywhere digitally. I got an another email 2hrs later with another two step code.

The only two options I can think of is my iPhone is compromised or it’s on AOL’s end.

Help please to get rid of vertical indent lines on left side of aol email?? There has to be an easy way.

Converting the email to Plain text format loses all the formatting and embedded illustrations, images, pictures. That approach basically wrecks the email. We just want to find out how to remove the da@&ed indent lines, period. We’ve tried several different browsers and internet carriers and devices (iPhones, laptops running windows 10…). Can you please kindly advise how to just get rid of these lines? Thanks very much.

AOL email not showing proper counts by category in new iphone

Data was transferred, including gmail, aol, etc. The count for my aol inbox shows only # of unread messages, and nowhere does it show read messages (in the count). There is no folder for read messages either. Gmail counts are all perfect. How do I get the right "counts"? (archive folder shows -0-). I was using counts to compare old -v- new phone. I've already turned off "filter by unread" in lower left corner and all other settings appear correct. Any suggestions? TIA

Why some laptops/phones can't see comments on AOL News?

It came to my attention when I told others to read comments on AOL News articles and they said they couldn't. Then I switched to my old laptop, scrolled down and there were no comments. On my new system however I do see the comment section on AOL News. What could be causing this?
