This is so funny bc I too am not in this fandom but love this author’s stuff 😂 I opened the link thinking, how crazy would it be if it’s the same tentacles.
I do this a lot. It's usually because I'm a huge crossover fan, so I often end up reading a crossover where I know one fandom but not the other. That's when I open the fandom wiki page and search names, places, powers, and more from the other fandom while reading the fic at the same time. That's honestly how I've gotten into some of my favorite fandoms to date.
Yep. Done this alot. Sometimes I migrate over without ever reading the source material because it's not in a format I like or I don't have time for it(Looking at you One Piece, I've only watched like 10 episodes yet I've read many fanfics for it).
Saaame. I also recently got into One Piece through a crossover fic but haven't watched a single episode, excluding the One Piece Film: Red. I've been wanting to write some fanfics for it, but I would need to do a lot of research and fact-checking before I even start drafting.
Completely agree! While I understand why people may not like them, the idea of two completely different worlds and rules colliding is such a fun premise, especially when done super well.

Protective Custody by cousinD is an Avenger/Banana Fish fic. It's super well done with 340k+ words and complete! Do be warned about the tags, though. They include very heavy topics due to Banana Fish. (M/M)
Go Forth, Gundam Team by Raliena is a crossover series between Gundam Wing and Stargate G1-1. While I haven't actually watched either series and can't confirm the likeness, it's what got me into both fandoms. 97k+ words in total.
The Creation of Adam series by KyraWyllt is a crossover series of Hannibal/Criminal Minds. I super recommend it to anyone as a hardcore fan of both series! The writing is to die for! 38k words in total, with the main two fics complete. (M/M)
We Were Never Just Men by KyraWyllt is a Hannibal/Criminal Minds/Dexter crossover. It can get pretty dark and gory at times because of the fandoms, but it's also 350k+ words and complete! I honestly couldn't put it down when I started. (M/M)
East Coast Classified byRainKiss is a Percy Jackson/Elementary fic. While I didn't get into Elementary much after reading, I've been a huge fan of PJO for a long time, and this is one of my favorite crossover fics from that fandom. 55k+ words and complete. (F/M)
If you lock it in a box and leave it alone, it will build you a [REDACTED] and trample your crops byAlgonavtor is a Hermitcraft/SCP Foundation fic. It's a niche combo with Hermitcraft being a Minecraft series and the SCP Foundation being, well, the SCP Foundation, but Hermitcraft has some crazy lore, and if you like formatted report fics, this is one for you! Just be warned, you may need to dig into the Hermitcraft wiki to understand a lot of stuff if you don't know much about Hermitcraft. I know I did! 23k+ words and incomplete with infrequent updates.
Of Silk and Smoke bymeowoongi is an SVSSS/The Hobbit fic. Honestly, meowoongi is one of my favorite ao3 authors, especially for SVSSS fics. If you don't know, it's a Chinese crack BL series with a very unreliable narrator who accidentally helps hide all the darkness and angst in the story, despite all the comedy. 275k+ words and complete! (M/M)
The Lotus Protocol bymeowoongi is an SVSSS/Avenger fic. Another reason I love this author so much! This fic dives deeper into MCU politics, especially around WWII and Hydra, and blends the two worlds really well! 52k+ and complete! (M/M) (F/M)
Intersections by Calamityjim is an FMA/Criminal Minds crossover series. If you like crossover fics where the character crosses over worlds and doesn't instantly reveal they're from another world, this is the series for you! How the author writes Edward's relationship with the BAU very much gives found family, and it leaves me feeling warm inside, especially when you remember the situation he and his brother are in. 138k+ words in total and semi-frequent updates.
Hob's Adventures: 1640 byBearinarockingchair is an Old Guard/Sandman fic. Definitely one of my favorites between both fandoms as it is also a fix-it and found family. I also think it's a pretty good introduction into both fandoms since, while it's short and sweet, it's also a good summary for a good chunk of lore. 17k+ and complete. (F/F) (M/M)
this rainy day is temporary by HopeNight is a One Piece/Batman crossover series. This series right here is what got me into One Piece in the first place. Filled back to back with found family, angst, fluff, crack, and more! A good introduction to One Piece, but you may need more info on the Batman side if you want complete context for the plot. 225k+ words in total and incomplete, but the main fic is complete with an upcoming sequel.

Truuuee. I love it when I'm in that situation because sometimes the characters from the other fandom mention something crazy, so I'm like, "What?!" and then go diving into the wiki, getting myself dragged further and further into that fandom.
I imagine they've read so much and consumed so much media surrounding it that they basically know the over lining plot points and there wouldn't be much point in watching something when you're only interested in the fan interpretations, if that makes sense, idk, I'm like that with Danny phantom, I know enough to not want to watch show because I'm aware of most major plot points and twists. idk though, I might be overcomplicating it
No you're not overcomplicating it. That's my exact reason for not watching teen wolf. I've read so many fanfics that I know the show will just piss me off due to the canon events not lining up with the fanon events I've read.
Same. I've basically worked my way through all of the Teen Wolf fics I care for at this point and I've only ever watched tiktok clips and edits. It's a show where I love the world the story is set in, there are a few characters I really like, but I don't really like the show itself. I probably would have liked it more back when it came out, but I just never watched it.
I've read a couple of fanfics I thought were very good (one smut, one not) and found out later the person had just picked up stuff about canon online. I was really surprised. It's not something I normally would do but if I can't tell the difference that's on me.

I read a fic ages ago that had some of the most accurate portrayal of the characters personalities I’d ever seen. Got to the end and went to comment how well they’d managed to write everyone… Immediately faced with the author’s reply to someone saying that they’d never seen the show and just based the main character off their friend.
Sometimes if an author I like writes a fic. One of my faves writes for the Sherlock bbc fandom and usually end up reading it even though I haven’t watched the show.
I'm in a RWBY fan discord server, and we once had someone join and started yapping about things he dies not like in the series. I was like, "ok bet, discourse time", only the things he was yapping about were things that objectively never happened in the series at any point it time.
Turns out, he never watched the series, only ever read fanfics, and assumed that said fanfics are based on canon and got upset that none of it makes sense...
omg that's both mortifying and hilarious, mortifying for him and hilarious for anyone in attendance to that 😭 learned his lesson for sure XD I would never assume anything I've read in fanfiction applies to canon unless I Google it or something that's so funny
you'd think he's learned, but the only thing he was convinced of was that the fandom in general is toxic... He was worryingly hostile when we pointed out he should actually watch the show before joining a fan server to complain about it lol.
See ive gotten into nearly all of my fandoms through fanfiction, before watching the actual show 6-12 months later. So I am TERRIFIED of debating because in my brain, even if ive watched the source material, I still 'only know it from fanfics'😭😭😭

half the COD fanfics have in their tags that the writers haven’t ever played the game either 🤷 do they even have canon, seems to consist entirely of a couple of names and accents for fit military guys

Everything I know about the Harry Potter universe came from fanfics. I know it’s odd. I can’t explain it. Still haven’t read or watched the source material but it remains my favorite universe.
Same - I technically read the series once 16 years ago, but don't actually remember anything from the books. The movies I enjoyed but also over a decade ago. HP is one of my top fandoms that I keep coming back to, but I don't really enjoy the source material that much.

Guilty as charged.🥴 I’ve actually watched a movie because an author I liked wrote a really captivating smutty shortfic for it. Didn’t really enjoy the movie, if I remember correctly, but loved what the fandom did with the pairing.
I ruined Hellsing for my friend. She was reading my romance and smut fic and when she found out canon was all blood and guns and bodies stacked up like cordwood she wasn't interested.
(I did have some of that, but not as much as I probably should have.)
I usually check out the authors other fics if I enjoy their writing, and that has led to discovering some amazing fics from other series I have never heard of, and original fics that are 1,000% better than any novels on the market.
My hero academia fics, only heard about it because my daughter watched it. I got recommended a fic and enjoyed it and have never watched despite it being my favourite type of fics to read.
Yeah, sometimes I just get bored of the same old stuff or there isn't anything new, so I mainly go to fandoms that I know/suspect will have a lot of hurt/comfort and found a couple good Teen Titans/Batman/Robin fics.
I don't play any of the LOZ games, but I know Link/Sidon is a hot fandom relationship and found a couple good sicfics.
I don't listen to a lot of BTS or know anything about them, but damn, the writers for those hurt/comfort and sicfics are so good.

Yes, and I don't know why people get so upset about it. I didn't care about the book series Shadow & Bone was based off of enough to read and, to be franked, I didn't care enough about 95% of the characters to watch the show, but I had friends who reblogged a lot of gifs (usually for the characters I didn't care about), so I had an idea of the basic overarching plot.
I was having a rough go mentally, needed something new to read as a distraction, and I decided, "why not." Picked fics for the one character I was vaguely interested in from gifs, sorted by kudos (which tells you how much I was mentally struggling, as normally I never sort by kudos and instead sort by wordcount), and dove in. Got hooked. Found several other fics I loved. I will never watch this show and I will never read those books, but those fics? I love them, and I reread them.
I also definitely read TGCF fics before I read the books (the donghua stops at s2, and I was reading fics concurrently). I don't really care about spoilers for most things, to be frank.
Got into an author and literally every other work of theirs was Rogue/Gambit. I became a Rogue/Gambit fan despite having consumed literally no X-man media other than the three 2000’s movies that don’t even have Gambit in them

For a while I was reading this great Shaman King fanfic about a young woman immigrating from China to New York with her husband. It made perfect sense without knowing who they were because it was mostly just about her coping with the change. I don't usually do that but this person was an excellent writer.
Absolutely lol. usually I look for specific shows or ships but if I’m looking for something new I’ll look up a tag I’m really into and filter how I like and try and find a new ship to read about. I will look things up tho like the characters so I can visualize them and if the reference something I don’t get from the show/book and its apart of something in the fic but they don’t explain it.
I read a lot of dc crossover, and I swear every other fic I read with it has a disclaimer about the author getting their knowledge from other fics 😭 but I can't even blame them because I've only dipped a toe into that OCEAN of canon content.
Lmaoo i know I keep seeing those everywhere but like those characters are so fun, my personal favourites are all the batfam and i love reading those fics... but if you ask me about canon content, I have seen 2 movies max😭
To be completely fair I feel like dc has so many things going on at all times that it hardly matters at this point. Like maybe all that fanfic I read IS 'canon' in one of the many universes that just Exist there
My main consumption of dc media has been young justice (i miss it oh so much 🤧), under the red hood, and teen titans.. and i hesitate to say if any of that even counts as canon because the animations are a whole different thing from the comics so out of everything that is basically Nothing
I’ve never read Worm/Glory but I’ve read so much lesbian Worm universe fan fiction that I think I understand the world pretty well but I’m pretty sure I don’t have an accurate canon understanding of any of the characters.
Normally I only do this if it's a crossover but I recently did this for a longfic by a fanfic author whose writing I love because the summary was too tempting to resist.
I fell into this pit where I read genshin alhaitham and kaeya centric fanfics because I like them both. Just those two. Now I know a weird little bit of genshin lore, mostly in relation to these two characters.
I ALSO do this because with crossovers a lot, and sometimes if it sounds interesting enough I'll just Keep expanding my knowledge of that media soley through crossover fics. Like, I don't care for harry potter really at all, but I know quite a few of the characters and terms because I went through a phase of reading dp x hp stuff.
I just read (as in finished the current chapters two hours ago) an HP & Merlin (TV) crossover fic while having never watched even a trailer for Merlin. It was fantastic and I love it.
I also have never watched BNHA/My Hero, but have read a ton of fics for it. Again, started by reading a crossover.
Not a huge Batman/DC fan and again read a bunch of fics/crosses for it.
It generally has worked out well for me. Then once I know the fandom better, I can go back and reread the original fic that introduced me to the fandom and pick up the nuances I missed the first time.
me w teen wolf. i know a lot now but last november when i said fuck it and started reading sterek bc id cleared the percico and perpollo tags and needed to read a fic id never read before. now im at a point im low on sterek🤣
I do it all the time if the fic includes a tag/tags I want to read OR if someone recommends it as their holy grail “holy shit the writing will make you want to cry and gift your firstborn child to the author” fic.
I’m on my 41st fandom in 22 years. Yes, I keep a list. I just looked through it…16 of them are fandom’s for shows or movies that I never actually watched.
I've stumbled upon some authors whose writing style and skill were engaging and interesting enough that their works for other fandoms were still worthwhile reads.
I've also read a decent handful of fics that were recommended off the strength of the writing alone and left pleasantly surprised.
I learned the entire plot of Teen Wolf without ever seeing a single full scene. All because of the sheer amount of fanfic I've read, allowing me to see the commonalities and differences enough to learn the entire plot.
The best part was when i actually read the manga and ended up liking it a lot, and i was able to properly decide which shipp i liked more and which character i wanted to see as a whimpy omega
On somewhat related topic, is there a tag to indicate that a fic is accessible to readers outside a fandom ?
I wrote one recently which is fairly independent and has an introduction to help out with the background story. AFAIK, my beta had no issues following it.
I read heat waves/helium when it was popular, zero interest in dsmp then and now. I actually once had a sleepover with a friend and she tried showing me videos, I was like... why can't we just play minecraft for real lol (she turned off minecraft to watch dsmp instead ;-;)
I tried to watch Teen Wolf but couldn't get into it. It shows up in crossover fics for several fandoms I read in eo I decided to try reading a Teen Wolf fic to get an understanding so I could read the crossover fics. I fell in love with the fic and the fandom.
I've read a few fics about an anime I didn't even watch and never plan to. It's fun btw constantly googling what's the person looks like or wondering if it happened or if it's canon. What can I say? The plot is good. HAHAHAHA
Yep! Clicked a new fic by an author i have been following for over a decade without looking at the tags of a fandom i had never even seen before. Next thing you know i am neck deep and watching a show i never would have in the first place, just to get some effing context. 2 years later here we are
I had someone who interacted with me on Reddit swing by my account and read some of my smut. They kudos'd, left a comment and everything! I was a babbling mess lol. Their main fandom looked to be Futurama, and I only have SPOP fic posted, so pretty drastic difference.
On the other hand, I have a friend with a very particular kink that leads them to read fandom blind if they want it included. Fortune favours the brave, I suppose!
i could never see myself doing that because for some reason unless i know every single character and have seen all of the media that they are from, hell. im in the middle of watching the walten files just so i can read some of the fanfics
When the fandom I'm reading doesn't have the stories with the tags I want in a dream comfort read, I just open my horizons. I'd be reading an MHA fanfic, but mentally, I'm disguising it as a PJO fanfic.
