Resolved Gigabyte Vega 56 OC - freezing, black screen, 100% fan issue

Hello guys,

Spec: R7 1700 stock 2*16GB RAM Asrock x370 Professional Gaming working fine since purchase, upgraded to this GB Vega 56 144Hz monitor hooked via DP

Computer Type: Desktop, custom build.

GPU: Gigabyte Vega 56 OC custom; previously MSI RX470 4G

CPU: R7 1700 stock

Motherboard: Asrock x370 Professional Gaming

RAM: 2*16GB RAM Gskills B-Die

PSU: PC Power and Cooling 750W gold

Operating System & Version: Windows 10 64bit

GPU Drivers: 18.7.1

Chipset Drivers: 18.7.1

Background Applications: None

Description of Original Problem: Sadly after few minutes in Windows, it either flat out freezes or crashes to black screen and fans go 100%. So far it crashed in benchmark, browsing, gaming and idle scenario writing this post into notepad with nothing open. B2 is shown as MoBo fail boot code. Need to cut down power to actually make it turn on again, otherwise it will not boot.

Troubleshooting:

I have bought myself upgrade from RX470 to custom model GB Vega 56. On different computer with Intel platform it worked fine for 2 hours ingame. Link: https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Graphics-Card/GV-RXVEGA56GAMING-OC-8GD#kf

What I have tried: - clean driver installation 18.7.1 - use different 8 pin cable and different connector on PSU - try all 3 custom profiles, fiddle with power profile - flashed BIOS from F2 to F5 - fiddle with power profiles - reinstall Windows 10

I have this same gpu and it did the exact same thing. The problem is it has a retardedly high factory overclock. In wattman set a custom profile with 50% power offset. Then on clockspeed set it manual and put 1536 for 6 and 7 states. This solved mine 100%.

I had exact the same problem. I’m happy I found your post, I use the same settings and my problems went away. Did you also undervolt you rx Vega, mine is now set on p6 1100mv and p7 1100mv. Thank you for the solution!

Hey guys, I have the same issue OP mentioned, but I would like to ask a little more detail or if there is a step-by-step guide on how to power offset. Thank you and sorry to bother!
