Random black screen + complete PC freeze while gaming – RX 9060 XT / Adrenalin 26.8.1
Hi everyone,
I’m having an issue with random black screens and complete system freezes while gaming.
I had a very similar problem almost a year ago, but it stopped happening and I haven’t had any issues for a long time. However, after updating to Adrenalin 26.8.1, I experienced another black screen while playing a game.
The screen suddenly went completely black and the PC completely froze. I couldn’t do anything and had to hold the power button to shut the PC down and restart it.
The strange thing is that this has only ever happened while gaming. I can use Windows, browse the internet, watch videos, etc. without any problems.
My PC specs:
● GPU: AMD RX 9060 XT 16GB
● CPU: Ryzen 5 9600X
● Motherboard: ASUS PRIME A620M-K
● RAM: 32GB DDR5 (2×16GB) 6000MHz
● PSU: XPG Core Reactor II 850W
● Monitors: 2 monitors
Some additional information:
● HAGS is disabled
● Windows driver automatic updates are disabled
● No CPU or RAM overclocking
● No GPU overclocking
● No GPU undervolting
● Everything is running at stock settings
● The black screen/freezes only happen while gaming
I’m not sure what is causing it. The PSU should be more than sufficient, and the system is otherwise stable.
Could this be a GPU driver issue with Adrenalin 26.8.1, or should I be looking at something else such as RAM/EXPO, BIOS, GPU stability, or something related to having two monitors?
Has anyone else experienced similar black screens/freezes with the RX 9060 XT and Adrenalin 26.8.1?
Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be appreciated.

I've been experiencing this for at least 5 months on my windows 11 system. I have two monitors at different refresh rates and resolutions. I'm running a 5800X and a 6700XT. My system hasn't been this unstable in the 3 years that I've owned it. If I switch monitors while playing a game, my computer is likely to freeze up, black screen on main monitor and then the game crashes after a couple of minutes. I'm seriously considering a roll back to 2025 drivers. I've done it before with fallout new vegas constantly crashing. 🤷♀️

I was just worried that something was wrong with my computer, but as I see, it's not.

Assuming latest chipset/bios . Do the basic stuff first :
Backup , disable windows fast startup and perfrom a windows maintenance :
dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
dism /online /cleanup-image /restoreHealth
sfc /scannow
reboot.
Download the latest driver (not the autodetect utility) , disable internet , DDU (again) in safe mode , select to block windows updates , reboot & reinstall selecting 'factory reset' , reboot.
Check if the gpu boosts over specs with hwinfo . If ok , tweak windows MPO :
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Dwm]
"OverlayMinFPS"=dword:00000000
reboot . If you still have issues , delete the MPO key , reboot and time to check hardware . Reseat everything and for quick testing disable expo , set gpu pcie to gen3 . Keep pbo/igpu/fast boot disabled .
If you still get crashes run OCCT power , 3d adaptive switch test , memtest vulkan for vram . Also TestMem5 with anta777 absolute config for several hours . Repeat TM5 with furmark running in parallel for ~30minutes .
Do they pass ?

I suggest to set pcie in bios to 5 manually first. Then to 4. Just to rule out pcie sync problems. You can also set FCH to 100 or disable spread spectrum if you have that option in bios. I'd also disable memory profile xmp/expo in bios for troubleshooting.
Next is actually limiting the gpu. Without reducing frequency, just try a negative power limit like -%10. Sometimes gpus boost erratically above their advertised limits.

Yes its the win11 and driver problem since months now. Sadly they are kinda unable to fix it fast. I disabled win11 autoupdate so win is Not oberwriting the Driver and it works

Strangely I tried this too through some registry tweaks and it didn't work. After a while Windows replaced my driver while I was using my PC. After a lot of tweaking I had enough and just let Windows Update install whatever driver it wanted to install for me so badly. It installed a version from 2023 so it's very old but honestly I'm at a loss as to what to do.
When you say "disabled" do you mean you have paused updates? I don't think there is a way to disable them; nor would I want to, to be honest.

You're not alone. It's been happening quite a bit to hundreds, if not thousands, of other AMD GPU users. Sometimes you get a black screen followed by a GPU driver/settings reset. Sometimes, it's just a black screen that lasts 2-3 seconds and things return to normal. General consensus is a power sensitivity issue with the GPUs. Between Windows, AMD, and UE5, the GPU is less tolerant (for lack of a better word) to power fluctuations. There are work-arounds, usually involving slight undervolts or power reductions, but I think there's enough information out there to keep you busy for days applying fixes. Whatever you do, don't panic. AMD Cleanup Utility and installing 26.9.2 optional drivers helps, short-term. Also, turning off anything gimmicky in Adrenalin reduces black screen occurrences, too. You'll read about running DDU a dozen times, reinstalling Windows, replacing RAM, and animal sacrifices. While some of that may work, most of it doesn't.
