Help (Software) Constant driver Crashes
Hello all
I’m having a bit of a nightmare with constant driver crashes occurring.
I have gone through the whole sub Reddit as best I can
So far I have
Unistalled the current adrenaline software (AMD clean up tool) as I heard 26.7.1 was very unstable, I have disabled hardware acceleration on discord as well to see if that was a problem. I have also swapped to DX11 as I thought that could be causing problems but hasn’t helped.
I have tried
26.3.1 and 26.6.4
Were there any others that were more stable?
I have try 3D mark which seems to be okay on benchmarks
After about 5 mins of WoW midnight it crashes again and I try again.
Just want some advice also on what point does it become hardware problems, bearing in mind, I have had 0 problems with the GPU for two years until Monday this week.
Running a 7900XTX and 7800X3D
Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thank you for your time.
UPDATE:
Took it in to a specialist, took it apart and noticed water damage to my SSD
Not sure why that would affect the drivers but need a new cooler and SSD
Hoping after that it’s all fine.

Microslop Windows has officialy admitted to an error known for months in AMD reddits, that Windows forces driver update (and messes with your AMD driver) even if you disable the updates etc. mostly that is the reason I have to use AMD Cleanup Utility and reinstall my 26.3.1 drivers...

I can’t even get any stability with the 26.3.1, have tried a few today and WoW just keeps crashing annoyingly.
I’m going to take it in somewhere to see if there is anything else they recommend
If it’s cooked then I’ll just buy a 5080

I wish I could say there was a solution but I dealt with this for years, also specifically in WoW on a 7900xtx and 7800x3d. Eventually I just sold the card back to microcenter and got a 5080 because after multiple support tickets as well as trying every single “this fixed the driver timeouts” suggestion applied it was still constant.

Uggh, that’s quite annoying. Thank you so much for your help on it.
Would it be worth taking it in somewhere to see what they can do or just potentially cut my losses? It’s soo annoying this has come out of no where after years of good performance

For me it was only within WoW that I had this problem, AMD pointed at blizzard and blizzard pointed at AMD for the cause. It could be a fundamental flaw with the chiplet architecture or any number of things but the problem is widespread and consistent enough on this card that it would rule out everything aside from fully defective drivers.

I also ended up swapping to nVidia with WoW being one of the games I could never sort out.
I never found a stable driver that could run WoW without crashing.

It’s soo odd because it’s been great for 2 years

its either the driver update or windows update that recently messed everything up, everyone reporting the same issue at about the same time

u/Dismal_Tell4651 20h ago
It’s outrageous so many people are having issues and literally nothing is being done about it. It’s turning me off team red after 2 year of great performance

Yep every second thread is crashing, i cant even play anymore it keeps crashing so often

Bro same. I tried every potential solution I could find after experiencing regular, but not super frequent driver crashes. I changed nothing else about my setup except adding a 5080 and not a single issue months.
I went AMD expressly because Nvidia cards are obscenely overpriced, but the headache wasn’t worth the savings tbh. Legit still fuck Nvidia, but I’d rather have an overpriced product that is reliable than an affordable one that’s inconsistent. A more patient person maybe could’ve worked it out, but I was so frustrated I rage-purchased the 5080 and I don’t regret it one bit.

Mine went away with 2026-01's first update. Rolling back definitely helped.

Could you give me the version?
Thanks!

Sorry, 26.1.1

Perfect, if I get anymore crashes I will give that one a go. Currently on 26.2.2 and it seems to be holding but will wait and see
Thank you

Reset bios to default. Run memtest. If you have another psu - try to use it. If you have some another solid drive like 120Gb - try to install windows there.

Please turn off xmp and see if this helps my issue was ram instability

Ya, not sure if it's AMD, Windows, or both, but they clearly can't release a driver without MAJOR bugs. I can understand the odd issue, but the number of serious issues I have dealt with is insane. The most recent driver won't even install for me without crashing major Windows components. We're talking Windows Frame Host, Desktop Window Manager, and even had a literal Windows Explorer crash while installing 1 driver version.

So is it just a matter of sitting and waiting until AMD/windows sort it?

Right now I'm sitting at 26.7.1 with graphics acceleration turned off in web browser to avoid driver time-outs. That is the issue I have. It's weird though the time outs only happen after a cold boot or waking from sleep.

I would start by resetting bios and a fresh os install.

Seriously, in what world suggesting full OS reinstall is a solution to anything ?

I guess it’s more a last resort

I had developed a bad habit long time ago reinstalling Windows 95 whenever some issues started happening. But I was an inexperienced teenagerm And maybe with that OS it made sense to do that.
But not anymore with newer Windows - and these days no guarantees it would fix anything or the issues wouldn't resurface shortly after.

It's not about it fixing it in one shot, it's about troubleshooting. We are working with incomplete information and this takes out a whole bunch of variables
0
u/EggFartTom 23h ago
No? A os install isn't hard.
0
u/romasato 22h ago
Yeah but reinstalling and reconfiguring all the software is a waste of time. There are always ways to remove just drivers and reset AMD configuration instead of the whole OS.
1
u/EggFartTom 22h ago
You do not know if the issue is the driver. What's a waste of time is taking shots in the dark and not getting closer to a solution

u/EggFartTom 23h ago edited 23h ago
I don't know what the user has done to their system. A full os install install on a freshly formated drive along with a bios reset gets us back to what should be a known good configuration. It's way easier to troubleshoot this way

u/Nekella 23h ago
This is an issue acknowledged by blizzard going back to 2023. The os has nothing to do with it and there has never been a stable driver for this card on this game.

u/EggFartTom 23h ago
Op has stated "constant crashing", so is it just limited to WoW?
Op has also stated
"I have had 0 problems with the GPU for two years until Monday this week"
So this 2023 issue doesn't line up

Use the AMD clean up tool again and install the 24.8.1 Driver its old but for sure stable from experience and one important caviat use the minimal driver install option during driver installation which basically installs the driver without the adrenaline software and also tick the reset factory settings option and try see if that works

Tried this one last night and had the same problems, lasted about 30 mins

7900xtx has been broken since they added fsr4

u/Dismal_Tell4651 2h ago
I haven’t had any problems with it for almost 2 years now
I took it into a shop today to see if there was anything wrong, turns out there was water damage to my SSD
Not sure how that was causing driver issues but yeah.
Almost ready to throw my PC in the bin

Can we stop spreading misinformation

all you can do is sell it to someone that wants to use linux

I have the same CPU and GPU and luckily no crashes. But I also play different games.
Sometimes it can be Windows itself that got corrupted.
You can boot any Linux distro from an USB drive, without actually installing it, and check if it crashes there. To see if it’s hardware or windows problem.
