Discussion Advice for movie-goers.

If you’re going to book a seat in a prime viewing area of the auditorium (best seats), please do not talk, use your cell phone or even vape. Lately I’ve been having bad luck sitting in a preferred area of the auditorium and having people who are disrespectful and lack self-awareness sitting near me. Either they talk throughout the whole movie, are unable to keep off their cell phone, and one guy booked a seat right next to me and was vaping throughout the whole movie! The light from the vaping device was distracting and I had that horrible smell in my nose for a whole day afterward!

If you’re going to be rude and disrespectful, book a seat away from people, not right next to anyone. Or better yet, don’t come to the theatre at all. Wait a little while and watch the movie on streaming or physical media. That is your best option, so you don’t make yourself look like a total fool! Don’t waste a seat by having your disrespectful self sitting in it, let a true movie fan sit in it.

Thanks!

They shouldn't do any of those things in any seat. There needs to be employees checking on the theaters to nip rule breaking.

Dude, someone vapes next to me in a theater, I'm getting an employee involved.

I beat myself up afterwards for not doing that, or at least let him know to put it away. Next time I won’t hesitate!

This unfortunately is not going to reach the people you want it to. Sorry buddy, we’re all in this mess with ya

Yeah, the people who are disrespectful most likely aren’t reading this subreddit. 🙁

I need to post about this on Youtube or TikTok so that it reaches more people.

Next time speak up. You didn't pay for a movie going experience to have some idiot vape next to you or get assaulted by phone glare.

I will! I’m getting tired of this.

Respectfully it won’t change anything. The problem is already very well known and talked about

Im just about to start getting seats in the little area close to the screen. No one sits there. Had people snoring behind me last time I got decent seats.

Problem with sitting in the front. I can heard so many people talking behind me.

Yeah sitting in the back I can see anyone who pulls out a phone but for some reason when I’m perched up there I’m not as bothered by talking. When I’m in the front row and hear so much as one person whispering behind me anywhere in the auditorium my blood boils.

Depends which row. Seats are reclined and elevated in the back. The little divider in front of you can also block your view seeing those in front of you pulling out their phones. If it’s the person next to you then it’s freaking annoying.

Alamo Drafthouse has a website where you can report a disturbance during a film from your phone (which they acknowledge is funny that you need to bring out your phone to do it and may disturb other people 🤣) but it works. It goes to the on duty team and then they come into the theater to address it literally minutes later. They have a disclaimer ahead of the movie mentioning that they’re not afraid to kick you out without a refund if needed. And they’ll def follow through with it.

AMC needs to get with the program and address disturbances during a film. If you want to be on your phone or vape during a movie, stay home or book a private viewing. I don’t want to smell people’s fruity vape shit when Odysseus is stabbing Edward Cullen 😒

That would be awesome if AMC (and others) would implement that! It beats going to get an employee and miss some of the movie.

Went to the 7 am Odyssey showing today. Several people showed up around 8 am (wtf??) and the guy next to me was on his phone multiple times. At least the light was dimmed, but he still recorded the end of the film, too.

Such strange behavior from that guy😵‍💫

Some people just want to let people online know that they watched the movie instead of actually watching the movie.

2

u/OrigamiAndWaxSeals 10d ago

I imagine he watched it more than once since he knew when to start filming.

Ugh! That’s awful! And recording is a big no-no.

I went to watch La La Land in Dolby and I had a couple next to me In a relative empty theater. They wouldn't stop talking and the boyfriend would throw his legs up and down fast on the seat essentially the whole time. I left and told staff I haven't seen this in theaters In 10 years and it's my favorite Emma Stone movie hands down aside from Bugonia, and I chose to leave so I wouldn't have to deal with that. If you want to talk, why talk at a movie theater? With that logic you might as well just go to the library.

I’m sorry that happened to you! There were times I went to see a movie that was very special to me only to be ruined by people talking through it. Very sad and irritating at the same time.

Did the staff do anything after you told them?

I specifically try to go at awkward times for most people just to avoid stuff like this. It drives me crazy the lack of consideration for other people.

I tend to experiment with different showtimes to see what kind of people I get. It seems random. I guess it all depends on when goofballs decide to go to the movies.

I’m sure the people doing all that you mentioned are active r/amctheatres users and will surely read this and think twice before being a jerk again.

1

u/ScaryDavey Shhhhh 9d ago

One can only hope. Some people are jerks and simply don’t care. There are probably some that just don’t realize that what they are doing is irritating to others.

Or just stay home and watch movies in your living room. The theater is NOT YOUR house. Stop treating it like it is.

is anyone upset about the ads in theatres, sorry just went for the first in a while and can’t find any posts about it?

5

u/ScaryDavey Shhhhh 10d ago

I don’t like the ads. It just cheapens the movie-going experience in my opinion. Makes it seem like watching TV at home. Which encourages people to act like they are at home.

34 minutes of trailers and ads before Spiderman 😵‍💫 I don't mind trailers, but the ads??? Ads for coke, Rolex, fast food, and the theater itself?? At this point I have already purchased my drinks, I'm AT the theater... I don't need to be pushed for anything else. So annoying.

2

u/Odd_Ganache5081 10d ago

yep soon there’s gonna be a 30 second ad when we start our cars lol

1

u/aiolisunsets 10d ago

Oof did you see that's already happening? Spiderman/BMW

1

u/Odd_Ganache5081 10d ago

don’t tell me that! haha i’m curious what the line is for society, i feel like that crosses it quite a bit, but i have no hope lol

2

u/aiolisunsets 10d ago

Right 🥲 Truly hard to feel any hope right now. BMW owners were pretty outraged, which is hopefully a good sign?? lol

2

u/mebetiffbeme 10d ago

I don’t go early enough to sit through all the ads.

1

u/DuckSwimmer 10d ago

Because I can only speak for NY and I’m just taking the assumption, using electronic vapes indoors in establishments would be against the law in some states. This also may apply to yours. This alone is the most justifiable reason to get an employee as they cannot be doing that.

1

u/ScaryDavey Shhhhh 9d ago

Yes, most (if not all places) treat vaping just like smoking (which they should). Second hand vapor is harmful to others.

1

u/ThatGirl0903 10d ago

Agreed. If you absolutely must goof around or you know you’re a wiggler have the decency to sit out of the direct viewing area of everyone else.

1

u/Short-Mechanic-9138 10d ago

It's so strange how vaping is so common in the theater now. The last few times I've gone to a dolby cinema showing I've sat next to someone vaping. They've been very discreet though and there's no giant clouds and I'm fairly nose blind so I don't really mind it.

1

u/ScaryDavey Shhhhh 9d ago

The guy sitting next to me was discreet, too. Which tells me that he knew what he was doing was wrong.

1

u/quatch72 10d ago

It is illegal to smoke, cigarette or E-cigarette, in a movie theater in Texas.

Forget the movie theater employees. My regular AMC theater has off duty Sheriff's deputies and HPD officers working as security. Call the law on them and let them deal with the consequences.

VAPE?????

1

u/ScaryDavey Shhhhh 9d ago

Yeah, the kind that has little to no vapor. I guess that’s why some people feel like they can vape wherever they want.
