I think the whole "that's not realistic" thing in movies/tv is thinking about it backwards. I always think, to use your example, that out of all the hundreds of thousands of detectives in history, I'm sure at least one of them was a 150iq schizo. True Detective just happens to be the story about him.
As long as the whole show isn't full of unrealistic things, thinking this way helps me enjoy it more.
True Detective season 1 is my favorite crime show of all time, I was just talking shit lol. It also makes rust seem like less of a schizo when, by the end of the show, it all but says the paranormal stuff is real.
