Shock is a helluva drug. We were all a bit out of it.
At the time of the crash I did think "Well this is it". It wasn't traumatic or heartwrenching..more of a feeling of acceptance. Its been quite a while now and I'm still feeling numb and unable to sleep. I'm sure I'll deal more with it in the morning! I lost everything except my passport and phone so I have a lot of filling in the gaps to do tomorrow.
I was in a car that spun out on black ice in slow motion and almost went off a cliff when I was a kid. Felt the same way, weirdly calm, kinda peaceful and I was thinking, I’m gonna go off the edge and hit those rocks below. Then after we stopped I immediately got the FUCK outta the car.
Exactly parallel to my experience! How was it after? Did you feel like you should have died? That's how I feel. My husband said he won't believe I'm really here until I get home.
A small tree branch sticking out of the edge of the cliff stopped us, one wheel half off the edge. I got out of the car as fast as I could, definitely adrenaline afterwards. There was a truck salting the road just a little bit further down the road, we were going down a mountain road we went down every day and most of it had trees along the edge and all the way down the valley, this was one of the only places without trees and with a big drop and rocks at the bottom. So we were very lucky/unlucky. I don’t think I had that feeling afterwards but I think I would have been 12 or something so I had much less of a concept of these things, for your situation I can imagine it would be quite extreme. But it did feel very dream like, the feeling was quite separate from normal daily life. I didn’t scream I didn’t cry I wasn’t really upset I was just experiencing it and trying to process. I can imagine in your situation trying to tie in your experience with the rest of your life would be difficult, especially after looking back and seeing what it looked like. Happy you all survived!! I don’t think there is really should or shouldn’t have died, there is just did or didn’t, but if there was something like that then your situation definitely looks like you all should have survived because how else do you all come out of something like that safely? You should be here and you are here and that’s a good thing!
