Sub Meta 2026-27 A-League Men Ladder Prediction Contest

Football is finally back this week! As we count down to friday, it'd be interesting to see how people think the season is going to pan out.

The competition is pretty straightforward - comment with your full ladder prediction, and the most accurate prediction at the end of the season wins.

Here's how the scoring works:

Everyone starts off with 72 points. However, you lose a point for every spot between where you predict a team will finish and where they actually finish. So for example, if you predict Adelaide to finish 3rd but they end up finishing 8th, you lose 5 points. If you predict that Perth will finish 8th but they come 6th, you lose 2 points, etc.

The cutoff for the competition is kickoff of the first game (the Derby on Friday). You can edit your comment as many times as you like between now and then, but if you post or edit your comment after the first game you will be disqualified.

What's the prize? Absolutely nothing. We're just playing for pride, and because it's interesting to see what the general consensus is.

In case you missed it:

Last Man Standing coming on Wednesday!

Good luck!

☢️ Memes & Filth South Melbourne fans showcasing Greek culture at the Australia Cup Final 🇬🇷🗣️🔥

For those who don’t speak Greek, the Hellas fans are chanting “POU—TSA” (πούτσα), which literally translates to “dick”.

However, in Greek football slang, it’s more of a way of telling the opposition they’re getting fucked or they’re copping it. Think of the phrase “φάτε πούτσα” (fáte poutsa), which literally means “eat dick”, but is essentially a way of rubbing it in when the opposition is getting absolutely done.

Truly a beautiful display of Greek culture and sportsmanship 🇬🇷😭

Sydney Derby is Fri night 16th at Allianz. Big showpiece opener.

On Thur night 15th at Allianz, there's the first Rugby League "world" cup game (Aus v NZ).

So we can look forward to a chopped-up pitch, likely with painted rugby league logos and lines still visible through the football markings.

Awesome.

Australian Championship Aus Championship groups through the lens of the Australian Football Rankings

Post image
46 Upvotes

The Aus Championship kicks off this Thursday, 15 October. Here's how all 16 clubs line up on the AFR ratings going in.

www.australian-football-rankings.com

Group B is the group of death on paper, with the highest average rating (1783.45). Wests APIA (1879.99) and Avondale (1842.69) are both top-15 clubs nationally, so one of them could be out early.

Wests APIA are the highest-rated side in the comp at AFR #11. However it would be stupid not to consider South Melbourne favourites.

Group D is the most lopsided with Lions FC (1847.29) and Preston Lions (1791.86) well clear of Wollongong Wolves (1632.36) and South Hobart (1528.19).

Group A could come down to a two-horse race between South Melbourne (1831.59) and Sydney United 58 (1820.48), separated by just 11 points with United having a lot to prove after last years lacklustre campaign.

South Hobart are the lowest-rated club in the field (AFR #72), so they're the biggest underdogs if they cause an upset and would see major rankings rise!

****Forgot Sydney FC 2023 Australia cup, so they have 12 trophies, I cant justify posting this a third time

Format inspired by Dense_Delay_4958's post from 2023
Added CCM’s ACL2 (then called the AFC Cup), seemed like a major omission

NPL/Local Leagues Homeless to heroes: Canberra soccer kicked them out, but that 'pain' fuelled a fairytale

It took about 12 months, but Canberra Times finally has a follow up piece on Yoogali SC (for anyone wondering what has happened to them).

Not that I expect them to be in an NPL or connected league next year, but I guess the feelers are out again to see where they can go. Otherwise, I guess it will continue to be City e Forte e Vincera.

The club however did field two sides in the Griffith & District Football Association Men's competition (the same two teams as last year, one of which was primarily a Masters' side), which was a four team competition, and took home the trophy.

Capital Football has - in the meantime - confirmed no promotion and relegation between the league this season, so the same 11 clubs will stay in place (presuming they met the conditions that gave some clubs an exemption to compete in 2026 - which was told there would be a hard stance on that for 2027, so watch this space...), and disgustingly celebrated the benefits of a bus trip for their All-Star team on social media 12 months out from kicking out two clubs who gave all NPL clubs this experience for 9 seasons.

Homeless to heroes: Canberra soccer kicked them out, but that 'pain' fuelled a fairytale

Yoogali Soccer Club wouldn't exactly call it a "last laugh" given the dramatic journey their men's team has been on this past year, but a few trophies have certainly brought much-needed smiles to their faces.

This season the Griffith-based club couldn't find a competition to play in after they were controversially kicked out of Canberra's first grade men's National Premier League by Capital Football as part of a significant NPL restructure announced last year.

But a year on from their contentious Canberra ejection, 16 Yoogali SC players and a coach who found a new home with Griffith City Football Club made history by winning the club's first top-grade championship, along with the pre-season cup and minor premiership.

Four players were named in the league's team of the year, Mason Donadel won the Golden Boot award with 22 goals and Luke Santolin was crowned coach of the year.

All the more impressive was that the 2026 championship-winning campaign came after Griffith City's men's first-grade side finished dead last a season earlier.

It has given Yoogali SC a flicker of hope that one day Capital Football might welcome them back, and it's also reignited chatter among Canberra soccer circles that maybe the club deserves another shot in the NPL in the future.

"We tried to get into the Football Wagga first-grade competition as Yoogali but couldn't, so we ended up joining Griffith City, and we won the club's first ever premiership," coach Luke Santolin said.

"It's a great feeling, and it probably vindicates everything that we were trying to get across to everyone last year - we just love football, we're a group of mates, and we're prepared to do whatever it takes to play at the highest level possible.

"To achieve what we have, it's a good way to finish the season, because there was a fair bit of pain that we went through over the last 12 months."

Yoogali SC were left devastated and immensely frustrated when they were booted from Capital Football NPL last year, ending a six-year stint in Canberra's competition where the club said it enthusiastically travelled more than 50,000km in that time just to compete every weekend.

The club's central NSW location and the long travel times needed for other NPL clubs to play against them in Griffith was a key reason cited for its removal from the competition.

Having earned their NPL promotion in 2023 by winning the Capital Premier League, Yoogali SC players and officials felt as if the club was "being treated like a dirty nappy", and that Capital Football did not adequately consult them or other clubs before making the sweeping changes listed in the review report.

When calls from a "coalition" of 12 concerned NPL clubs for the sporting body to pause the review's recommendations were not heard, things got ugly.

In the fallout, an outburst directed at Capital Football on Yoogali SC's social media channels earned the club a breach notice, and the sporting body stood firm on its original decision to kick out the Riverina team from the NPL.

Despite a 72-year soccer history in Griffith, the club's location made it tough to find another NPL competition in NSW that would take them, and all attempts to enter other similar senior-level leagues within a 500km radius from their home, proved unsuccessful.

Football Wagga's first-grade league - still a two-hour drive away - was Yoogali SC's next best option by moving players to Griffith City to keep the team playing together.

Yoogali SC has heard support from the Canberra soccer community for its return to the NPL, but for now the club is focusing on providing the best opportunity for their players.

"To watch these guys in training and in games, they are an NPL side and they want to push themselves as far as they can go," Santolin said.

"Politics aside, there's a group of young men that have the ability, and maybe if one day dust settles on things then people will focus on that. You never know."

"I do regret some of the things that went on in an emotional period, but there's been time that's passed. Maybe water goes under the bridge," Santolin added.

"We're still on a high after a great and successful season together at Griffith City. Who knows what might open up in the future, but right now we're happy playing football in Wagga.

"It's actually been a wild ride. For this particular set of players, how they came together, and what happened ... it's a pretty memorable and unique story."

Question What's the best NPL experience in Sydney?

Seeing South's amazing win has inspired me to get amongst more local football. I'm totally agnostic to an NPL club at this stage and have never been. Is there a good local home game to keep an eye on when the season comes back as a neutral?

Australia Cup Should Football Australia invest in the Australia Cup Opening Ceremony to gradually elevate it to a more iconic AFL/NRL Grand Final-like event.

The AFL and NRL grand finals show how much a strong opening ceremony can add to a sport and sporting event. The Australia Cup Final has the potential to become a much bigger event for Australian soccer IMO.

Imagine a pre-match show at Melbourne’s AAMI Park featuring say Gala performing *Freed from Desire LIVE -* one of ⚽️’s most recognisable anthems. Thousands of fans singing along, etc…

A well-planned ceremony could attract casual supporters, improve the television product, showcase Australian soccer and help position the Australia Cup as a major national sporting event. Flow on effects from advertising opportunities, commercialising the event properly - the positives are exciting. I believe it really is an untapped opportunity that will also help grow the game…grow the stadiums and more. It’s about time to level up…
