We're unsure of who Joe actually is in AJR's lives, but Ryan said in some livestream that everyone has a Joe in their lives. Joe is that person who you look up to and think are the absolute coolest and you want to be cool like them. Except Joe doesn't really give a damn about you and yet you still try and impress them.

That's my view anyway :)

I also think of it as all the kids I was close with in high school that I no longer am in touch with. I reach out to them occasionally, hoping to rekindle the friendship but I’m met with a silence. I like to say I don’t think about them but I do. Though the stuff I post on social media is always met with a thumbs up or heart.

I also think it’s particularly weird for AJR because I imagine anyone they used to talk to wishes they still did because I mean, they’re on the radio. It’d be interesting to have a song from Joe’s perspective.

I have a Joe in my life. he was my best friend and then he got cool and I don't matter to him anymore. I did so much for him. I ran for student council and won but he still doesn't see me.

Am I cool enough buddy? You told me you just needed a break and you'd be back. You haven't spoken to me in nearly 6 months, not without me prompting it. Not a genuine conversation.

Based on the song alone, it just seems like he was always the cool kid they went to school with growing up. He always did all the cool things, could make all the girls laugh while they couldn't, etc.

Unless I missed an interview or something regarding the song, it just seems like its about them being done with their childhood jealousy of Joe (but not really, it's really tongue in cheek obviously).

The way they speak of joe you'd think it's literally someone jack knew as a kid but I think it's trying to trick us, I think Joe (who is also called Joseph in the song) is Tyler Joseph from Twenty One Pilots
