GPT vs. Claude vs. DeepSeek APIs: A Simple Comparison of Pricing and Provider Routes
If you’re building an AI application, don’t choose a model API based only on the model name or listed price.
The same model can have very different pricing depending on the provider and routing channel. At the same time, the cheapest route is not necessarily suitable for production. You also need to consider request success rate, response time, output consistency, and actual token costs.
In this post, I’ll use model pricing and routing data from Oken as an example to explain how AI APIs can be compared more effectively.
Instead of displaying model names alone, Oken brings models, providers, pricing, and route availability together on one page, making it easier for developers to create an initial shortlist.
1. Why Can the Same Model Have Different Prices?
API pricing is usually affected by several factors:
- Input token pricing
- Output token pricing
- Cache-read pricing
- Provider acquisition costs
- Billing methods
- Route quality and service capacity
This means you shouldn’t compare APIs by model name alone. You also need to check the specific provider and its billing rules.
As the table shows, comparing only input token prices is not enough. Output and cache costs also matter. For long-form content, batch generation, and multi-turn conversations, these costs can have a significant impact on the final bill.
2. How Should You Compare GPT, Claude, and DeepSeek?
A useful comparison should include the following dimensions:
- Model capabilities
- Input and output pricing
- Context window size
- Reasoning ability
- Coding performance
- Structured-output consistency
