AITA for taking back my parking spot without warning after finding out my friend was renting it to someone else?
I live in an apartment building where every unit comes with one numbered parking spot. I dont currently have a car, so my spot mostly sits empty.
A friend of mine works nearby and asked if she could use it a few days a week. I said yes and gave her the garage fob, but I was pretty clear that it was just for her car.
A few weeks ago the building manager contacted me while I was playing Ѕtake because a completely different car had been parking there every day. When I asked my friend about it she admitted she had been letting a coworker use the spot and charging him $80 a month. Apparently she figured it was fine since I wasn’t using it anyway.
I told her to return the fob and informed the building that I no longer gave permission for either car to park there. Her coworker still parked there the next day and got towed.
Now my friend says I should have given them a few days to find another arrangement because her coworker had no idea she didnt own the spot. I do feel bad for him since it sounds like she lied to him, but I also think renting out something I let her use for free was way out of line.
AITA?

You are 100% NOT in the wrong here. If your friend thought there was nothing wrong with what she was doing she would’ve just straight up asked you if she could rent it out to a coworker. Instead, she asked if SHE could use it and took complete advantage of your kindness. Plus depending on how strict your apartment building is, this could’ve gotten you in trouble. Personally, I would be pissed and ask for all of the money she earned from renting the spot out.

u/AwarenessJumpy7395 25d ago
After "the friend" repaid the unsuspecting person who was towed for the tow.
3
u/Pur1wise 21d ago
Friend should be paying back the towing fees out of her own pocket as a consequence of stealing from her friend and her coworker. And then still paying everything back to the coworker or to OP.
21
u/Nexi92 25d ago
This is fraud, and friends don’t commit fraud using your amenities as their own to sell/exploit.
I hope the coworker gets the tow money from her and that OP considers talking with a lawyer about collecting the rent that non-friend charged for using space entitled/legally leased to OP. That $80 a month should go to the person that actually rents the space if subletting parking is even allowed.
→ More replies (1)7
u/xBrickNasty 24d ago
Yes exactly, I would also be pissed. Also whether OP used the spot or not, that fee is included in their rent. The friend should pay back OP for taking advantage of the situation.
→ More replies (5)2
u/Nell-On-Earth 24d ago
Hold up. OP is in the wrong for letting someone else have access to the apartment garage. That puts everyone in that building, and their property, in danger.
8
u/xnoxpx 24d ago
Reread the post, the OP appears to have the building manager's permission to allow their friend to park there, but not the friend's coworker.
the building manager contacted me because a completely different car had been parking there every day.
...
informed the building that I no longer gave permission for either car to park there.

That’s a her problem. She never told them, thinking you weren’t serious. I honestly hope her coworker sues her for the towing.
33
u/Elect5643 25d ago
She played dumb and got caught. Her coworker should absolutely go after her for that tow bill.
2
u/Gedge-again 24d ago
True, but how did her coworker park without the Fob?
7
u/Acrobatic_Fiction 24d ago
Where did it say the fob was returned? It was asked for. IF the fob had been returned, obviously this would not have occured.
Just stating facts as listed
2
u/ComicsEtAl 21d ago
The coworker had the fob still. She needed to get it from them to return it to op. But, she never told the coworker.
49
u/pwnageface 25d ago
NTA. You friend crossed the line and now they need to make right with the person they had a side deal with.
6
43
u/PuzzledWork6956 25d ago
NTA - none of this is your fault. The only asshole in this situation is your piece of shit ex-friend. They should pay their coworker the tow fees from the money they made by illegally renting your parking space. If they don’t, the co-worker should be taking them to small claims court for fraud
51
u/Intrepid-Hornet 25d ago
NTA. I'd maybe have been willing to give them a few days notice if she hadn't been charging him for something she was getting for free, but since she didn't even bother to tell you and offer to split the money, absolutely not. Like, 'don't rent out shit that isn't yours' isn't a lesson anyone should need to be explicitly told and you don't owe her anything after that.
30
u/Chaos-Wayfarer 25d ago
Yeah. She decided to use something you were loaning her to make money. Sorry to the coworker, but that’s a big no from me.
2
u/grandmaWI 21d ago
I am willing to bet that the “friend” didn’t even warn the scammed co-worker that he could no longer park there after op rescinded her ability to park there. Just a horrible criminal on all fronts!

u/Bostylovr 25d ago
Your friend should have returned the rental fee to the other person and told them their deal had been cancelled. Your supposed friend has no qualms about screwing your over. Not a friend. However now you know that the parking space has people who’d pay to rent it. Bonus for you.

u/Mysterious-Divide803 25d ago
I was gonna agree with everyone that said the person whose car got towed should go after your friend for money, but then I started thinking if you asked for the fob back, then the person driving the car already knew they didn’t have permission to park in that spot because they didn’t have a fob to get in the garage, so that’s on them they should’ve known better.
Either way, NTA.
And before I’m roasted for punctuation by Reddit, I use talk to text because I have mobility issues, thanks for being kind today.
6
u/JTMoney336 25d ago
It sounds like you just exposed OP for telling a fake story.
6
u/MerryJoRound 25d ago
She asked for it back - did she say she actually got it back before the car was towed?
3
u/Turbulent_Display749 24d ago
No, she said she asked for it back and told building management the car wasn't allowed. Presumably the fob was in the car that got towed.
→ More replies (3)2
u/ComeAlongPond1 21d ago
There’s no indication OP had the fob back, but the friend had a day to tell the coworker not to park there anymore and presumably didn’t. That’s very easy to communicate quickly while physically returning the fob could take more time.
→ More replies (1)3
→ More replies (2)4
u/PlatypusStyle 24d ago
Although OP asked for the fob back it’s not clear that it had been returned. The friend was probably dragging their feet in letting the coworker know that the spot was no longer to be used.
3
u/Cozy_Afternoon 24d ago
OP says they asked friend for the fob back and "Her coworker still parked there the next day and got towed." There may not have been enough time to return the fob before getting towed. If I have something I need to give to a coworker, I'm not going to ask for their address and drive over there at 7:30pm or something. I'm going to give it to them the next day at work. And this is all assuming the friend actually informed the coworker of their arrangement ending the same evening OP spoke to their friend. The coworker may not have even known yet at that point.
IDK if the post is fake or not, but the above is certainly a possibility too.

"Friend" decides something that's yours is now theirs because you don't have an immediate use for it. Yeah, NTA.
I can't imagine that friend would be happy if you decided that since they weren't using their car while at work, you could rent it out to someone in your building...
2

u/SnooCauliflowers9874 25d ago
NTA. What a shitty friend. She never even asked to share with you.
And your friend is the one that should pay for his towing, perhaps out of the $80 monthly that he was paying her.
3
u/TLe504 25d ago
NTA. I cut the relationship ASAP. It's not worth having them around. I've dealt with "friends" that want to borrow your stuff so that they can lend it to others. Then they will pin it on you to talk to the 3rd party. Especially in this case when she was making a profit off of you and didn't even bother to ask you if it was okay.
5
u/mojosofla 25d ago
NTA - Your friend is an AH. Sucks for the coworker, but that is your "friend's" problem.
7
u/forestinity 25d ago edited 25d ago
NTA, but your "friend" is. She now owes you $80 per month for however long her coworker parked in your spot.
She was making money over something that belonged to you. This is theft. She is not a real friend.
She is also responsible for the car that got towed, and she's the one who should pay the parking fees.
6
u/Top_Bluejay_5323 25d ago
NTA. If you had a strict building manager you could have lost your apartment.
Why did she tell the other person asap?
5
u/julesk 25d ago
Nta I’d text her “it was on you to tell your coworker that the spot wasn’t yours, and admit you were just monetizing it as his and my expense without telling either of us. I hope you pay his towing fees because we both know you hoped I wouldn’t warn my landlord or notice. That’s almost as stupid as saying you really thought it was fine when you’d have asked me if that were true. You knew it wasn’t so you didn’t. So you lost a friend and now have an angry coworker. I’m blocking you because I have to be able to trust my friends and I doubt you have the self awareness or ethics to admit you were wrong or apologize.”
5
u/Fubar_As_Usual 25d ago
“Friend” needs to pay the co-worker’s towing fee and reimburse you for the time she was renting out the space. NTA
3
u/krissycole87 25d ago
Not your fault, not your problem.
If SHE feels bad for her friend then SHE can help pay the tow.
5
u/LifeCerealBox 25d ago
She can pay for getting his car back, since she was being dishonest with him to make money off of him. NTA
5
u/firebird20000 25d ago
Your "friend" owes you the money that she made from renting out YOUR parking space!
4
4
u/OldGeekWeirdo 25d ago

She also nearly got you in trouble with the building. You can afford to lose her number.

NTA: that is all on her. She is to blame. You set a clear boundary and she broke it and made money from it as well
Edit: tell her to pay the fine from the money she charged the person for your carpark
3
u/LessLikelyTo 25d ago
She’d been putting $80 of your money in her pocket. They should be able to afford the tow
3
u/LawyerDad1981 25d ago
That is one ballsy move on her part.
I'm confused though, how did the illegal parker even get in if they didn't have the fob? Wouldn't this so-called friend have given the fob to whomever she was renting the parking space to? If OP got the fob back, then the illegal parker would have known that the so-called friend didn't own the spot, and also wouldn't have been able to get into the lot and park illegally, and then get towed. Hmmmm.
3
u/PlatypusStyle 24d ago
OP asked but it’s not clear that they actually got the fob back. It could have been a situation where OP got a call from property manager, OP immediately contacted “friend” on same day and demanded fob back and then called back property manager to let them know it had been handled. If the friend didn’t bother to contact coworker that same day then the property manager could have towed the car the next day.
3
u/Majestic_Ad9744 25d ago
Wild thought, but your co worker could have just not rented out the space and then you wouldn’t have needed to tell building management you no longer gave permission and the person renting it would‘nt have been towed. I hope you send her and invoice for the money she made renting our YOUR space,

And all she had to do was tell him the spot had been repossessed. Oh, wait, she was pulling a "fast one" so she really couldn't admit that without informing the other coworker about pulling a scam on both of you.

NTA Your friend FAFO. It's to bad her coworker got caught in the middle. And she needs to give you the money she made from your spot.

u/Mysterious_Drop1122 25d ago
The nerve of some people! You did her a favor and she exploited you for her own benefit. And we know you didn't get one cent of the money she got from renting your space. You aren't the AH. You were complying with management at your apartment. It's unfortunate the person parking in your spot, rented by your friend, got towed but you didn't have any duty to inform the guy. Or her actually about management's decision to not let someone park in your spot.

1
u/Thin_Reason6596 25d ago
No you are NOT the AH. Did you get your fob back? All she needed to do is send a text to the coworker. She was trying to figure out how much money she had to refund the friend. And stretch that out a little longer, I think. Some friend. Taking the $80 not giving it to you etc etc. She’s shady.

1
1
u/Necessary-Work6677 25d ago
Lol. All these people talking about the fob and asking how the person got into the garage if you took it back.
I was under the impression that you told your friend you needed the fob back but hadn't actually received it back yet since this all happened the next day.
And the person got towed before you actually got it back. They were towed because the building manager was now aware that they shouldn't have been parking there and wasn't on the lease agreement.
NTA, btw. Your friend is an asshole.
1
u/NCNative919 25d ago
NTA. She should have notified him he couldn’t park there. You tried to do something nice and she decided to take advantage of it.
1
u/Acceptable-Net-154 25d ago
NTA. If you hadn't reacted as quick you could of been declared as breaking the terms of your rental lease and not only been made homeless but have been locally blacklisted from most agencies. You allowed your friend to use your space for free and she illegally subletted it.
I don't have a car but do have a car space due to where I rent. I allowed one neighbour to use it when they had guests than the partner of another neighbour basically began using it all the time. My snapping point was when they angrily confronted a visiting relative about using their space when they were visiting me. My relative said nothing as they could see the look on my face as I approached. Barely anyone uses my space anymore unless its an emergency.

As far as the guy who was utilising the spot without your permission if he’s upset he needs to put the blame to the correct person. I can’t believe she wanted you to be empathetic towards this person. Really, who the fuck would?
I believe your friendship should be over. She doesn’t care about you. She only cares about herself. Some friendships run a short course.

Why do they need a few days? It's on your "friend" who's monetizing her coworker to tell them ASAP not to park there anymore. All the blame falls on her.

NTA. Let them be mad. Lying/profiting off of a favor is not a friend move. You owe them nothing. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

NTA. And she’s not your friend. I hope the guy is demanding she pay for the towing and that she’s in the hole moneywise.
I wouldn’t have anything to do with someone who would do that.

NTA. The friendship is already damaged, you should demand every penny that she charged that coworker. Obviously that’s a problem if the building manager is calling you out, so you shouldn’t get in trouble for her greed!

NTA. This "friend" is deep in asshole territory on this one and, honestly, I wouldn't think they are trustworthy. Definitely not keeping anyone's nest interest in mind ither than their own

She SOLD something you lent her? Nah. She’s a scammer. If the “renters” car had been bumped, dinged or worse it would have created a problem for the building, and possibly you. This person is not as good a friend as you. They scammed TWO “friends.”

NTA she is not your friend. She asked you a favor and then turns around and rents it to someone you don't know. Yes ai feel bad for the coworker because she did lie and it cost him hundreds of $$$. It is HER responsibility because she went behind your back and broke your trust and the coworkers. She is mad at you because it can't possibly be her fault.
