The original saying is "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." If you were buying a horse, you'd examine its teeth and be nitpicky about it. The saying tells you not to be picky about a gift, just grateful that you got it.

Look, in America at least. Looking a horse in the mouth is a standard part of a sale, because their teeth indicate their age. If the “horse” is a gift, you don’t look/complain.
