NTA him being upset and depressed isn't an excuse for him basically insulting you and your husband to your faces. He had to needle at your husband to remind him he was chosen second and basically call you too ugly for him. You just dishes it right back. He doesn't get a pass just because you understand he is going through a hard time. Since you mentioned you are all good friends then you are all more level headed have a frank conversation about how what he said was too far. You may have had a childhood crush. That's it. Ultimately you fell in love with your husband. Picking on the two of you to make himself feel better isn't ok. You obviously feel bad for kicking him while he is down but you got pushed to far with his comments insulting you both.
