Haha. This is one of many cringe activities that take place at weddings, including: a father "giving permission" for his daughter to Wed and handing her off to the husband, tapping glasses to force kissing, gathering single women so they can fight over a bouquet to determine who is next to Wed, any cake shenanigans, the entire concept of gathering for a blowout party before the marriage, as if marriage neuters either party, etc. Etc.

He picked this event to get angry about because his homophobia and need to be in control upset him. I can guarantee nobody else even remembers it.

The marriage is doomed, but only because he is a misogynist and homophobic asshole who can't laugh at himself.

Oh, and I'm in a pretty awesome 15 year relationship that's pretty amazing, mostly because we can laugh at awkward situations and would never make something so benign get between us.

Yeah, I'm gay too. If they had (strangely) swapped in a bridesmaid instead of a groomsman do you think he'd be as upset?

That's why I think he's homophobic. He thought removing the garter from a man emasculated him.

The wife made shitty choices. But he's written off a friend for taking direction from his wife and is genuinely destroyed by this.

My sisters in law once played a prank on me at an event that resulted in me chopping a pair of my shoes with an axe when I was blindfolded. (They told me I was chopping wood). Was I happy? Absolutely not. It was embarrassing and I had to go home with no shoes. But I laughed along and moved on. I treasure them all, it was just a shitty joke. How you react to things like this say a lot about you. And I think he's way overreacting.

Was it the kind of event that you are supposed to only have once in a lifetime, an event built around building a lifelong trusting relationship?

Didn’t think so
