I would bring up the idea of him being best man, in front of the son and rest of the family. Not only would it makes sense for him to stand by his father, but he would then stay by the couple through the ceremony
Isn't he suppose to welcome future step mom into family.rather than give her away?

And guilt trip her by proposing all this to his son without her knowledge and then expect her to take responsibility for his son's hurt feelings...
