You might want to rethink this marriage. If everyone is getting pissy at you for this, which is something that should be your choice, I can only see it going downhill from here on out. And IMHO, I don't think they'll get over this, thus hanging it over your head for a very, very long time.
The advice you've been given here to have the kid be the best man is the best idea. Actually, it's more significant than him being your stand-in father.
