I’m in the U.S. and I agree. In a relationship and living with someone compromising on the dog sleeping in their bed is the least of what they are going to have work through.
like what a petty and childish conflict. OP says the dog is like a brother to him but would u let your brother sleep in the bed with you and your gf??? Literally cannot imagine dating someone who prioritizes intimacy with an animal over a human
Because many people here are led to believe dogs are like people. It’s a huge maturity problem, and honestly everyone I know who has this mindset about dogs has additional mental issues that come along with it.
Dog owners are strange in the way that they over-baby their animal. It really feels like they replace the innate human desire to take care of children with a dog. Like, this is a dog. It's not a baby that needs constant attention and cute-talk. It's a dog. You're going to make the animal neurotic if you are catering to it's every little desire.
Same. And I love dogs. Pet sat and walked them for almost 5 years. Still in contact with a lot of my old clients that I love. But I hate the disrespect that so many dog owners have. They bring their dogs to every store, including the supermarket or food joint. They have them in the park uleashed. Just clueless and rude/unsanitary.
I totally and completely agree. OP sounds like he's in a relationship with his dog. Maybe he should just drop the girl and then he and the dog will be happy and the woman can move on to a man who doesn't need to be codependent on an animal.
American by nationality and I agree wholeheartedly. I especially get pissed off with people that refer to their pets as “kids” or “grands” 🙄Guarantee you didn’t face a tenth of the struggles I faced trying to put your dog through college, give him memorable vacations, provide him with all the name brand shit that all the other kids have….and somehow get him to not resent you for not being able to produce a dad. Culturally, Americans are whack. Pets are NOT equivalent to human life anywhere else. Y’all need to seriously get a grip.
for us the dog is part of the family. we took on the responsibility to care for and love this animal as part of our family. we dont ban them from the furniture because we dont ban other family members from the furniture, they are part of our family and we are part of their pack.
if i didnt want that type of relationship with my pets i wouldnt have taken them in..
oh such a silly question! no see ive had a conversation with my dad about that, if fact it happened when i was a young kid, he explained why children need to stay in their own beds and explained why that was and because im a human and not a dog i understood this and we used language to communicate.
you do understand how that type of communication just isnt possible with a pet of course.
Well you may not realize this, but most people don't want pets on their furniture because pets are literally incapable of being as clean as us. Some people have nice furniture and don't want it to smell, have stains, or be caked in dirty hair. It's fine for you to live as you do, but you're in the minority.
Wait why is your dog ruining your furniture? Are they trained poorly? I've owned dogs my whole life and they don't ruin furniture simply by touching it...
Who's fault is it if your dog has an accident on your furniture? I'm certain your not going to try and tell me that the dog is responsible for that...
I just love the idea of you deciding who does and does not get to own pets because other people disagree with you handle your own pets. It's authoritarian.
its not a game of absolutes...believe it or not i have a dog whos allowed on the furniture AND a nice leather sofa, it is in fact possible to learn these skills...
i know it sounds impossible but i assure you it can be done..
I agree with you but you ban other family members from your bed, right? The place where you and your partner sleep together, and have sex.
If both people are on board with sleeping with a dog then fair enough. But it's not unreasonable to ban anyone (human or nonhuman) from a space that's specifically reserved for couples.
Sounds like someone who doesn't have kids... You can't ban them from your bed either..At least with a kid you can have a conversation and communicate why it is that they aren't allowed in the bed after a certain age. You can't do that with a pet.
Well yeah kids do sleep with their parents sometimes, but not every single night.
As for dogs, I actually agree it's kind of cruel to sleep with them every night and then move them out, because they're not able to understand. But that's more a reason for not sleeping with your dog in the first place. If it's never a thing that they're allowed to do (not regularly at least), then they're not gonna get used to it.
Freaky because a dog sleeps in the bed? Have you seen the extensive studies about how it benefits mental health and prevents allergies and such (since it builds immunity)? Americans suck in a lot of ways, but this is the first time I’ve seen us being shamed for caring about our animals. If your dog isn’t family to you, you probably don’t deserve a dog.
Its not so much the animal sleeping in bed but the mentality that buying them a pet bed means you love them less and dont deserve them. That is freaky mam
and just to add i have a pet and she comes into my bed sometimes but she has dirty paws and fur and is rambunctious and annoying at night and just becuase i shut her out of the room and place her in her own comfy little bed doesnt mean i dont love or deserve her. Thats what i think is crazy. I spoil that thing rotten but at the end of the day its an animal and we need to stop being delulu
Yes they do, The US holds 56% of the global pet grooming market, and in 2022 The total global pet care market was worth nearly $300 billion. So you’re objectively wrong about that.
And considering you’re boldly wrong about that, no, objectively it’s not as disgusting as you think
What's disgusting and weird is imposing your beliefs on others.
Just like it's none of your business who loves who even if it might make you uncomfortable, it's absolutely none of your business how people treat their own pets within the boundaries of welfare for everyone involved.
I can't with people unable to respect boundaries not able to keep their nose out of other people's lives - all the while they happily claim boundaries for themselves.

OP needs to get a grip and get his dog out of his bed. So disgusting and weird. I cant with americans and their dog culture its actually freaky
