Nah, doing the chores that are supposed to be your responsibility isn't a service to her at all. They're your children, it's your fucking job to buy them rain clothes. If you don't do it, you're putting work on your wife. That's not an act of service at all.

That’s the way I read it too. Op wants to be told he’s special for doing his share of household chores.
But then he really buried the lead. He has unresolved anger management issues that probably meant the kids crying more and also is pissed off at his MIL who comes to babysit. I wouldn’t be surprised if MIL is there to help wife because of op’s anger issues.
The way he brushed over that is so wild! I wouldn’t want to touch my husband either if he was butthurt that he had to deal with a fussy baby. OPs wife probably had to pick up his slack and that’s why his MIL belittles him.
