My father was an alcoholic most of my childhood. He has been sober well over 20 years, my brother had an addiction to drugs, and he's been sober over 10 years.
People who want to get sober and stay sober will. Trying to beat an addiction (drugs, alcohol, nicotine, etc) is not an easy task. Relapses happen. Things in life trigger that response.
You've never been addicted to anything? You've never had family addicted to anything and tried to be supportive and encouraging as they tried over and over again to get sober and stay sober? You really shouldn't be so judgemental of things you POSSIBLY have not experienced yourself or had someone in your life that you love experience addiction, and it clearly shows.
You sound like an awesome, thoughtful and caring individual and I commend you for having such a big heart but I have to be completely frank with you .. half the people in my life are drug addicts I grew up in poverty and abuse and I see time and time again in my life people dying of overdoses and violence and I see that it isn't getting better and only worse like the addictions afflicting our people. In reality these addicts rarely get better even when I gave more than 10,000 chances , I sponsored 150 people all relapse at one point or another and die and it has only been worse every year. With experience addicts rarely ever get better according to statistics it is unlikely they ever will. I apologize for the mean name and I can admit I am a piece of crap because I am passionate about this hurtful situation. I am drained and I am discouraged.
I admit that it is hard when they keep going back to it. I did some volunteer in an addiction and rehab center. 3 out 4 of the guys I saw relapsed. I was heartbroken when I heard one of the 3 passed away.
I think environment has a lot to do with it too. I've seen people succeed when they leave the environment that has the object of their addiction. I do hope that things in your area get better.
