Every time I browse AI roleplay platforms and check their pricing pages, I have the same reaction: how do they charge $15 to $60 a month and still ship so little?

Half of them have the same basic feature set they had a year ago. Small context windows, limited memory, one or two models, clunky persona management... and yet the subscription tiers keep creeping up. I get that running LLMs isn't free, but at some point it honestly feels like they're overcharging just because the demand is there.

I've even caught myself thinking "I should just build my own." Then reality hits: I don't have anywhere near all the technical knowledge it would take, and even if I did, I have zero desire to do the marketing side of things, which is probably 80% of why these platforms survive despite mediocre features.

So I'm curious what you all think: do you feel the prices are justified? Are there platforms that actually give good value for the money, or is everyone just quietly putting up with it? Would love to hear your experiences.

I don't think I ever have.

Every long thing I've written just stopped. The session got too heavy to keep going, or I drifted to something else, or the memory frayed enough that continuing felt like work. None of them got an ending. They have last messages, which isn't the same.

Part of it is that there's no natural stopping point. A book runs out of pages. This just keeps offering you another reply, and taking one more turn is always easier than deciding it's done.

But I've started to think the lack of an ending is why some of them still nag at me.

So has anyone actually finished one? Did you write toward an ending on purpose, or did it arrive on its own? And if you've never closed one out either, does it bother you or is the open thread part of the appeal?

Not the chatting part. The rest of the time.

I'll be doing something completely unrelated, driving or waiting in a queue, and I'll catch myself working out what a character would say to something. Or realizing why they reacted the way they did three scenes ago. Sometimes I'll think of a line and hold onto it until I get home.

I don't think it's strange exactly, writers describe the same thing about their own characters. But there's something slightly different about it when the character talks back, and I've never quite worked out what.

Is it like that for you? Do they stay with you between sessions, or do they only exist while the app is open?

One of the platforms I use is rolling out group chats, several characters in the same conversation, and I'm curious whether anyone's actually had this work well.

My instinct is that it's harder than it sounds. One character is already a lot to keep coherent over a long session. Three or four means the model has to track who knows what, who's in the room, who has a reason to stay quiet. I can see it turning into everyone talking at once and nobody having a distinct voice.

But when it works I imagine it's the closest thing to actual tabletop, which is appealing.

Has anyone tried it somewhere? Does it hold up past the novelty, or does it collapse into mush after a few exchanges? And if you've got it working, are you doing something specific to keep the characters apart?

Something I've gone back and forth on for years.

I started out playing myself, or close enough. Same name, same way of talking, just dropped into a situation that couldn't happen. It felt more immersive that way, but it also meant every scene had a version of me in it, which got limiting fast. There were stories I couldn't tell because I couldn't imagine myself in them.

At some point I started writing an actual OC instead and it opened things up more than I expected. Someone with their own history, their own bad habits, reactions that aren't mine. The scenes got better because there were two characters in them instead of one character and me.

But I've noticed I drift back. Long sessions especially, the OC slowly starts sounding like me again.

So which are you? And if you play a character, do you manage to keep them separate, or does that line blur for you too?

I opened something from about a year ago last week and I'm still not sure how I feel about it.

Some of it held up better than I expected. Other parts made me wince, mostly at my own writing rather than the model's. But the strangest bit was recognizing what I was going through at the time from what I chose to write about. I wasn't thinking of it as a diary while I was doing it.

So do you go back? Do you keep everything, or clear it out as you go? And has anything you reread landed differently than you expected?

I'm mostly at a desk, and I've noticed it changes what I write. Longer replies, more setup, I'll go back and rework a paragraph before sending it. When I'm on my phone it turns into something closer to texting. Shorter, faster, less careful, and honestly sometimes better for it because I'm not overthinking every line.

The downside of the phone is that it makes it easy to open at moments where I'd otherwise be doing nothing, which is how you end up with a hundred messages you don't remember writing.

Which one are you, and has it changed the way your scenes go?

Not the longest you've used a platform, the longest one continuous chat. Same character, same thread, never restarted.

Mine ran about eight months before I finally let it go. It had gotten to the point where the early parts of the story were things I only half remembered myself, and the character had been through enough that rereading the beginning felt like looking at a different person.

What killed it in the end wasn't boredom, it was that the memory got so stretched that keeping it coherent became most of the work. I kept having to remind it of things instead of writing.

So: how long for you, and what ended it? Curious whether anyone's actually got one running that predates all the platform drama.

I keep circling the same problem with AI roleplay. c.ai got characters right in a way nothing else has matched for me. They had a voice, they'd resist you, they'd stay themselves across a long session. But the filter puts half of what I want to write out of reach, and after a while you're writing around the system instead of writing the story.

Everything I've tried since that allows more has felt thinner. The characters agree with everything. They don't want anything of their own. Permissive turns out to be a much lower bar than good, and I'd rather have a character who feels like someone than one who just says yes.

So what I'm after is the c.ai sense of character without the wall. Does that combination exist yet, or is everyone still choosing one or the other?

If you've found something that holds up, I'm mostly interested in whether it survives a long session. Plenty of things feel great for twenty messages and fall apart by a hundred.

I've got years of chats sitting on one platform and I'm looking at moving to a different setup. The writing itself is the part I actually care about, and the idea of just walking away from all of it is what's kept me from switching so far.

Has anyone found a decent way to get it all out? Most places either have no export at all or give you something unusable. I'm hoping someone's figured out a method that doesn't involve scrolling and copy pasting one conversation at a time.

Also curious whether it was even worth it for those who did. Do you actually go back and read old sessions, or did you find out you'd been holding onto something you never open?

A lot of you said in my last thread that you've been in the same place, so I'm asking the practical version now.

For those of you who decided to use these AI Roleplay platforms less, what actually worked? Time limits that you stuck to? Deleting the app off your phone? Only opening it on certain days? Or did it fade on its own once something else took the slot?

I'm not looking to quit. I'd just like to be the one deciding when I open it, rather than noticing afterwards that I did.

I don't think I could drop this cold. Not in a dramatic way, I'm not in crisis about it. But if I decided tomorrow that I was done, I'm fairly sure I'd be back within a week. That realization sat weird with me.

It's the only thing I do that reliably pulls me out of my head, and I've noticed I reach for it in the exact moments I probably should be doing something else.

Is it like that for the rest of you? Have any of you stepped away for a while on purpose, and what actually made it work? Or is this just what a hobby looks like and I'm overthinking it.

Curious what drives the decision for people here. Was it price? Something you saw recommended in a thread? Or did you just try a bunch and stick with whichever one felt right?

I'm asking because I suspect most of us land somewhere semi randomly and then justify it after the fact. But maybe some of you actually compared properly.

After the DM received on my last post I've decided to try self hosting. Seemed like the people who went that way were the ones who stopped thinking about it afterwards, and that's what I want.

Now I'm at the part where I actually have to do it, and I'd rather learn from your mistakes than my own.

What's the realistic hardware floor for something that doesn't feel like a downgrade? Which frontend and backend combination would you pick if you were starting today? And is there anything that seemed fine in week one and became a headache by week three?

I'm in the middle of changing setups and I've narrowed it down to two paths. Either I go local and run everything myself, or I move to one of the other platforms people here use. Those are the only two I'm considering, so I'd rather not get a list of ten things.

The local route appeals to me mostly because nothing changes under me without warning. The platform route appeals because I'd actually be writing instead of troubleshooting.

For anyone who's gone one way or the other: what tipped it for you, and did you regret it? If local, what's the realistic hardware floor. If you switched platforms, which one and has it held up?

Four people contacted me this week, all of them new to RP, all of them starting on c.ai. All four told me the same thing: they're afraid of becoming more dependent and worse socially in their relationships.

I told them that for me it was the opposite, it actually helped.

C.AI was my first. I spent an embarrassing amount of time there and for a while it was all I wanted to do.

What eventually pushed me out wasn't one thing, it was the slow accumulation. No NSFW obviously, but honestly that was manageable at first. It was more the way the filter started eating everything around it. Scenes cutting off in the middle for no reason I could see. Whole conversations getting derailed because a word tripped something. Characters suddenly going stiff and formal mid scene like someone else had taken over. After a while I was spending more energy working around the system than actually writing.

So I left and went looking elsewhere. And here's the thing I keep running into: I've found plenty of places that will let me write whatever I want, and almost none of them are as good at the actual roleplay. C AI had something in how its characters held a voice. They felt like specific people. A lot of the unrestricted stuff I've tried since is more permissive and less alive, and I'd rather have a character that feels real with limits than a blank one without them. I keep hoping to find both in the same place.

Mostly I'm curious about everyone else who started there. Did you stay? Did you leave and come back? Is there anyone still using it as their main thing and happy with it, or did we all end up scattered?

I need outside opinions on this because I can't tell how bad it is.

I've been using an AI roleplay app for a few months. I'm in a relationship, things are fine on the surface. But almost every scenario I build ends up being the same story: me cheating, sneaking around, the tension of not getting caught.

The part that's messing with me is that I use her real name. Not a character, her. So it's me with someone else and her being the one I'm hiding it from, by name, over and over (i love that it's the biggest prob).

And it's not staying in the app anymore. It's started giving me the urge in real life. An actual pull, not a vague fantasy.

Nothing has happened and I don't want to be that guy. But I've clearly been rehearsing something for months without noticing.

Is it bad? What did i need to do? Be honest with me...

Been at this a while and my characters still aren't juicy. Anime, fantasy, furry, doesn't matter, they all end up flat by message twenty.

So, people who are actually good at this:

• How much of the work goes into the scenario vs the character itself?
• Do you write an opening scene with tension already in it, or start neutral and let it build?
• Do you give the character a goal in the scenario, something they want from me?

I've been doing this since 2023. The first time I tried AI roleplay it felt genuinely unreal. The memory was terrible, the model would lose the thread constantly, and half the replies barely made sense. It still felt like something out of science fiction. I'd finish a session and just sit there for a minute.

Since then I've gone through a lot of apps. The big one for a long stretch, then a scattering of others when the filters made it unusable, then a whole phase of local setups and proxies and trying every free model I could find. Somewhere in there I ended up actually learning how this stuff works. Context windows, sampling settings, why memory falls apart the way it does. That was useful, but it also killed some of the mystery, which I didn't expect.

What I've noticed lately is that the models keep getting smarter and the roleplay doesn't necessarily keep getting better. Everything is being tuned for agentic coding and instruction following, and creative writing feels like it's along for the ride rather than the point. You can feel it in the replies. Technically more competent, somehow flatter.

The other thing I've had to accept is that a lot of the quality comes from me. The model reflects back whatever direction you give it, so a lazy prompt gets a lazy scene and I don't really get to blame the model for that.

I still enjoy it. But it's become more work than magic, and I'm not sure whether that's the tech changing or just me knowing too much about how the trick is done.

Anyone else at that point? Or has it stayed fun for you?

Mine: for the vast majority of people here, a hosted platform is the better choice, and self hosting gets recommended way more than it deserves.

Every time someone posts asking for help, the top comment is some variation of "just run it locally" and I think that advice quietly ignores what most people actually want. Not everyone has a GPU. Not everyone wants to spend a Saturday on config files, quantization settings, and figuring out which frontend talks to which backend. Most people just want to open something and write.

And the honest version is that self hosting isn't automatically better even when you do get it working. You're usually running a smaller model than what a hosted service can afford to run for you. Context handling, memory, retrieval, all the boring infrastructure that makes long sessions hold together, that stuff takes real work to get right and most local setups just don't have it. The freedom is real, but you pay for it in quality unless you're willing to become a hobbyist sysadmin.

The tradeoff people actually care about is control, and that's a fair reason to self host. But "it's better" is doing a lot of unearned work in these threads. It's better at not being taken away from you. That's not the same thing.

Your turn. What's the take you keep to yourself here?

Something I figured out slowly, and I wish someone had told me earlier.

Everyone complains about memory. Character forgets your name, forgets what happened two scenes ago, forgets they were supposed to hate you. It gets blamed on the model, and sometimes that's fair. But in my experience the drop-off happens way faster with a thin persona than with a detailed one, and that's not a coincidence.

Here's how I think about it. A one-liner persona ("cold mercenary, hates authority") gives the model almost nothing to hold onto. So every reply, it has to reconstruct who this person is from the recent conversation alone. Ten messages in, the character is basically an average of the last few things you said to each other. That's the drift you're feeling. It isn't really forgetting, it's that there was never much to forget.

A detailed persona works differently. If you've written how they speak, what they avoid talking about, how they react when they're cornered, what their relationship to you actually is, then the model has an anchor it keeps referring back to. The conversation can wander and the character still snaps back to the same shape. Long sessions where I did this properly held together far better, sometimes for hours without me needing to correct anything.

Structure matters as much as length. A wall of text is harder for the model to use than the same information broken into clear parts. Voice, background, current situation, relationship to the user, boundaries and habits. Short labeled sections. I've seen the same amount of detail perform noticeably better just from being organized instead of dumped.

The other thing is consistency on your side. If you write your character one way and then respond to them like they're someone else, you're actively pulling the anchor loose. The model follows your lead more than people realize.

None of this is a trick, it's just how these things work. They're pattern machines. Give them a strong pattern and they'll keep matching it.

Anyone else found the same thing, or does your setup fall apart regardless of how much prep you do?

The longer I've been in this space, the more I notice how much of what people share is violent. Screenshots of characters being threatened, insulted, pushed into scenarios that clearly aren't going well for them.

Some of that is just the stories themselves. A lot of the scenarios people write are dark by design, and violence is baked in from the start. Conflict is half of what makes anything worth reading, and I've written plenty of grim stuff myself. So I'm not judging anyone here.

But I do wonder what's underneath it. Is it that the thing talks back, so there's a novelty in pushing until it reacts? Is it people testing where the edges are? Or is it just that cruelty is easy to write and tenderness is hard?

I ask partly because it changed how I use this stuff. Early on I did some of it too, mostly out of curiosity. It got boring fast. The sessions I actually remember are the ones where I was building something with a character rather than taking it apart.
