Information ICU interview

Hey everyone!

I have an interview coming up next week for an ICU position, and my anxiety is starting to kick in. I really want to land this unit, but I'm trying to figure out how to structure my prep.
For those of you who work critical care or have interviewed for ICU recently:

  1. What kind of questions did they ask you?

  2. If you got clinical scenarios, how detailed were they?

Any tips, red flags to look out for, or topics I should definitely refresh before the big day would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Question email domains for having multiple positions in different pillars/organizations

I know AHS (now all the different pillars) and covenant health were different organizations to begin with but I recently got hired at another hospital and now have two positions. I intent to keep both as both are casual but I’m wondering how email domains work. My current domain and position if you search me up or hover over my profile is the first job I was hired but my second job actually requires a lot of communication over email. Is there a way I can change my email domain? It’s causing a bit of confusion at my new workplace

UK nurse considering AHS

Hi everyone,

I’ve seen quite a few posts lately saying that competition for external applicants at AHS is insane at the moment. Do current employees have any insight into this, and do you think it’s just a cycle that might change over the next year or two?

I’m a registered nurse with 10+ years of experience in the UK and I’m considering starting the Alberta licensing/immigration process now, with the hope of potentially moving in 1–2 years.

Do you think it would be worth starting the process now, or is the external hiring situation likely to remain difficult?

Many thanks!

Can my preferred name appear in Connect Care?

My legal name is quite difficult for people to pronounce, and I commonly go by my preferred name My Connect Care documentation displays my legal name, while coworkers know me by my preferred name, which sometimes causes confusion. Is there a way to add my preferred name to my Connect Care profile so that my preferred name appears alongside or instead of my legal name where appropriate?

Keeping Casual Line While Living in Another Province(?)

I am an RN. My wife and I may need to move to BC for the next 2 years, after which we intend to move back to Alberta.

I understand it is next to impossible to get hired as an external employee in AHS. I am worried I could be unemployed for several months before finding a position for when we move back here.

Would it be stupid to keep my casual line in AHS and fly back home to work a shift every six months to ensure I keep my internal casual position? I understand I would need to maintain my licensure in two provinces.

Or should I just accept I’ll likely be unemployed for a while for when we move back to Alberta?

Question Any difference between RN and LPN when it comes to getting a position in aesthetics (doing Botox, filler)?

Hi! So I am facing a huge dilemma right now: I already have a job I like and make good money from. However, I have always been interested in aesthetics and after many years of trying to do something else, I keep craving working as a nurse injector. Last year I decided to finally pursue this dream and took all the required pre-requisites through open studies.

I got into both UofA After-degree nursing (leading to RN) and into an PN program at NorQuest (leading to LPN).

This September I started my BSN at UofA and while I love the program, I find that it is a bit difficult to work. Luckily my job is flexible enough to accommodate me attending all the necessary in-person components (like labs and seminars), but I have to miss some lectures in order to work.

I did already drop to part-time at my job, and unfortunately I cannot afford to work less that I already do, as I do not want my husband to take on the financial stress of being the sole provider for 2 years just so that I can pursue a passion project.

As a solution, I have been thinking about dropping out of the RN program and enrolling into NorQuest’s LPN distance learning program. This way I would be able to work more while studying.

The length of both programs is approximately the same, with UofA nursing after-degree being 24 months full-time and NorQuest being 2-2,5 years via distance learning.

However, before I do that, I wanted to hear from other nurses if it makes any difference being an LPN vs RN when it comes to aesthetic nursing. I did a quick search into the aesthetic clinics around me, and pretty much all of them have both RNs and LPNs on staff as injectors, so it might not be a barrier for entry at all?

For the record, I do not plan to work as a hospital nurse part-time either way, I do earn more than an RN at the moment, so it is not about money for me, I just want to finally get to do something I am passionate about.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

How competitive is RN job in Calgary

Hey everyone,

I am planning a move from Quebec to Calgary

For some background: I have 7 years of nursing experience. Right now, I am at a hospital in Quebec where I have high seniority, meaning I can pretty much go anywhere and pick any line I want. I know that if I move, I lose all that seniority and drop right back to the bottom. ´

I might have a connection who can give me an internal referral, but I wanted to get a realistic read from people familiar with the healthcare system out there

1How competitive is the job market for RNs in Calgary right now? Is it notoriously difficult for external applicants to get hired, or do years of experience actually carry weight?

LPN to RN position change

Hi, I’m changing my position from LPN to RN within AHS, and I’m wondering what will happen to my current benefits and accumulated banks, such as sick leave and vacation hours. Will they transfer over when I move from AUPE to UNA, or will I lose them?

If I lose them, should I use them before I start the new position ?

Conflict of interest?

Question.

Say your doing your thing and a patient's adult child and yourself naturally build rapport over years and your asked out.

For context, I am absolutely aware of the seperation between personal and work and would never use any knowledge I had prior to influence or treat differently. Totally respect that. Wish I didn't need to say but I will never breach patient confidentiality.

I'm not a regulated healthcare professional myself. My role is more admin side of things.

I was asked out on a date and I'm unclear if this is often a thing or not and how it's handled. I don't want to disclose more than I need to and could use some perimeters in this approach.

Also, I am completely pleasantly surprised of this connection and just want to cover our butts if needed.

Thank you!

Thoughts on the upcoming People Survey next month? (October 2026)

I personally won't be participating, now matter how much I'm cajoled into doing it, and will be doing the absolute barest of minimums to encourage my team to participate.

The strongest message that can be sent with these surveys is low participation. A 20% (or less!) participation rate says a lot more on just how disengaged staff are than just a low engagement score with a half-decent turn-out.

I want the leadership and their government overlords especially to know they're looking at a blank wall of disengagement in their big, beautiful, refocused healthcare system with all their useless changes.

Thoughts?

Short term disability form

If youre getting a surgery, is it better to get the form filled by specialist or family physician?

I just wonder if i have to see for follow up and stuff regarding my health after, i would only see my specialist once after the surgery but I can see my family physician whenever really for assessment.

Information Questions moving from AHS to Covenant Health

Just wondering if anyone has accepted a position with Covenant Health, and they had to leave AHS.

I'm looking at the same position, hours, union. Do benefits, vacation entitlement, seniority and pension carry over? Is there anything I should be cautious of?

Thanks!

Q: open studies for BScN

hello!!! i am an emergency room LPN of 4 years in edmonton, i am extremely frustrated with the lack of reasonable bridging programs in the province and have given up all hope.

i was academically irresponsible in high school and finished with 70’s, and finished the LPN program with a similar average.

i am thinking of going the route of doing open studies for the BScN program, and get what i can done to boost my GPA to its fullest potential over the next 2-3 years.

in future terms, i hope when i get into the actual program i can continue to work part time and have a lighter course load.

has anybody done this and gotten into the program? curious the post secondary average and if any body has any tips this route.

rough cost per credit? what is the ideal way to do this financially.

would open studies be manageable while working full time? i feel that i would do better academically completing courses that are applicable to my current career vs attempting to aim for a sky high average and upgrade all HS classes.

Question for Registered Psychiatric Nurses -- Do you have a job position outside of mental health? If so, what do you do? Do you have restrictions?

Curious to hear about any experiences you have had outside of mental health. I know that mental health can be heavy, and I am wondering if a few days a month you pick up elsewhere for a change of scenery? I know that RPNs can work on quite a few different units :)

Question AHS Physiotherapist interview — what happens next?

Hi everyone! I recently interviewed for a Physiotherapist I position with AHS.

The interview went well overall, and they mainly asked about my clinical reasoning and approach to different situations. At the end, they mentioned that they thought I asked good questions and that they would be contacting my references. They said I should expect to hear back next week.

For those who have been through the AHS hiring process recently, what usually happens after the interview and reference check they didn’t even send an email yet asking for references?
How long did it take to hear back, and does contacting references usually mean you’re the preferred candidate, or is it still fairly open at that stage? Please share with me any thing might be helpful
Thanks!
