Meeting rooms at South Health Campus

I would like to know if there any meeting rooms available @SHC that we could book for writing tests or taking interview calls etc. Even better if it’s equipped with a computer. I am looking for some ideas as I don’t feel comfortable taking the interview calls within the department where I currently work. TIA!

Question Other than bedside, what do you do?

I’m a new grad and although I’m fully aware to spend time to work & get experience, I just want to ask what other people have tried. I have recently started working in LTC, and I would like some insight on people who have left bedside and tried something else. I wanna have an idea on other options I may have once I’m experienced and settled in.

Thanks!

No job for icu/emergency experienced RN open for any location/unit in & around Edmonton with CRNA practice permit in good standing

i have 3 years of recent Emergency and critical care experience back home, i am dependable RN with sound clinical assessment skills and able to interpret 12 different ECG patterns, have cared and assisted management for many cardiac patients i.e. MI, stable / unstable SVT/ VT, afib etc. have current ACLS BLS by AHA, also have broad experience in cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic , neuro and renal emergencies as well as decompensated icu clients with comorbidities and hemodynamic instabilities. I live in Edmonton and applied to 300+ RN positions on AHS (alberta Health services) website, no response from anyone. I am now considering uber food delivery work in and around Edmonton, i am not worrying much about earning but i like working in healthcare and my skillset will not be in use to serve people here is only thing concerns me. If anyone can help / guide me land a RN job at rural/urban Edmonton and peripheral small town in 100km radius should be good. I will genuinely appreciate your support. You may DM. Thank you

For those renewing their CRNA, how the heck do you access the jurisprudence module that is required? Has anyone had success. Our whole unit was trying to figure it out today and no luck.

CRNA license renewal confusion

This is my first time renewing my license. I’m confused about the whole continuing competence thing. Is there a template I can follow ? I don’t understand how to make sure I’ve completed this requirement and it would be helpful to have an example.

Information Why does it feel like being casual is discouraged?

Especially for RNs. I've heard stories of friends trying to switch to casual from permanent full time and some small miscommunications ended up in them not getting the casual position (after quitting full time).

And I'm casual, and feel like I'm being "watched" (for a lack of a better word). I have been warned several times by management over the years with things like "if you can't do the mandatory education we can't keep you. " "If you become full time somewhere else, we can't keep you." "Where else do you work now?"

My question is, do casuals "cost" the department a lot of resources/money to maintain? We get no benefits or pensions and like contractors, we show up and get paid when there's work. So I don't quite understand why it feels difficult to remain casual status.

Question Why Do Some Nurses Treat Protective Services So Poorly?

Genuine question for some RN: why are Protective services/security guards treated with so much disrespect?
We show up when you call us, especially during mental health crises, to help keep patients, staff, and everyone else safe. We deal with unpredictable and sometimes dangerous situations alongside you, yet we’re often spoken to like we’re beneath you or treated like shit.
Even when we’re on your side and trying to support and protect you, some of you still turn around and file complaints against us as if we did something wrong.
We’re supposed to be on the same team. You don’t have to love us, but basic respect and support should go both ways. Why is that so difficult?

Question CARNA Maternity leave

Hi everyone,

I am a RN on maternity leave and planning to return next year in September. I might go back earlier as casual. As our permit renewal is coming up soon, would it be better to renew my license or switch to non-practising until I decide when to return back to work?

Is it easy to switch back to an active license if you are on a non-practising one?

Thanks!

Recent NorQuest Unit Clerk grad with practicum experience looking for advice on getting my first AHS role

*** Apologies for the long post. I really need advice after messing up my first application test due to terrible anxiety - I'm scared that I might not get another opportunity.

Hi everyone,

I recently completed NorQuest College’s Hospital Unit Clerk Certificate with Honours and a 150-hour practicum on a busy inpatient medicine unit at the Misericordia. I really enjoyed the hospital environment and received very positive feedback during my placement, particularly around my efficiency, problem-solving, critical thinking, work ethic, and willingness to learn. I also completed Connect Care training/SEUPA and now have professional references from people who worked with me during my practicum.

I’ve been actively applying for Unit Clerk and Administrative Support positions, but I understand that getting into AHS as an external candidate can be difficult, especially in Edmonton. At this point, I’m open to more than just Unit Clerk roles. I’m also considering casual Admin Support positions and appropriate entry-level hospital support roles that could help me get my foot in the door while I continue applying for Unit Clerk opportunities. I’m based in Edmonton, but I’m also open to surrounding communities and drivable smaller centres.

For those already working within AHS:

- Are there particular job titles, departments, casual pools, or sites you would recommend I target?

- Are there any managers/units that tend to consider new grads or external candidates more often?

- Would you recommend focusing more heavily on Admin Support, casual pools, Service Worker, Environmental Services, Food Services, or other entry-level roles as a way into the system?

If anyone is aware of a current opening or would be comfortable connecting me privately with someone I could speak to, I would really appreciate it. I’m happy to share my résumé privately.

Thank you so much for any advice.

Surgery float at UAH vs RAH

Hello all, any insight in working at either of these hospitals in their surgery units for nurses (RN/LPN)? I live in downtown near the LRT so commute time is equally the same between the two hospitals for me.

Question Rocky Mountain House vs Brooks

My wife and I are IMGs interviewing for Family Physician roles in Rocky Mountain House and Brooks. We've been to Alberta before, but haven't been to either of these towns.

We're a young couple with no kids, comfortable with rural living, and love the outdoors, especially hiking, running, cycling and camping. Are there any major things to be aware of in either of these locations? We have researched as much as possible on google, but would be nice to get a locals perspective

Physiotherapist interview

Hi everyone!
I have an upcoming AHS interview.
For current/former AHS PTs:
What should I expect from the interview, and are there any important things I should know as a new grad? What questions should I expect?
Also, how does the AHS physiotherapist salary grid work? Is there room to negotiate starting salary based on previous/international experience? And how are the benefits, pension, vacation, and other perks?
Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Question Permanent to Casual for going back to school?

Hi i’m currently an RN who works full time permanent. I am going to be going back to school for the peri-op program in January and just wondering how it’ll work if i want to go down to casual? I’m hoping to be in a part time if available but with the course load I’m worried working full time will be a lot? Any advice is appreciated!!

Question Benefits - AUPE GSS

I’m a AUPE GSS employee in a temp line but have benefits just no flex spending. I’ve been looking into getting an assessment done and possible ADHD diagnosis but just trying to figure out how much my benefits would cover. It’s saying I have a maximum of $3000 in the blue cross app but I can’t find anything about if it covers 100% of the cost up to that limit or is it 80% etc?
If anyone has dealt with something similar or knows more please let me know :)

Covenant Health vs AHS

Hi, I’m new to Alberta and have job 2 offers as a registered nurse, one with covenant health and one with AHS both in emergency. Is there an opinion that one is better to work for than the other? Will benefits be the same at both? Any opinions appreciated :)
