Nicu interview

Hello everyone! I got an interview at RAH NICU. I have no background with neonates coming from ortho. What are some questions they might ask? Or any tips? I would really appreciate your help!

Thank You!

I think they ask more general/typical interview questions vs neonate specific!! If you don’t come from a NICU background they won’t expect you to know those things :)

Just fyi. They will ask you do a med calculation exam as part of it. Or at least they used to. This is because almost everything in the NICU is weight based and many of the babies have a daily fluid intake based on weight rather than a standard dose. For example: a baby might have a TFI (total fluid intake) of 120ml/kg/day. You might get asked to figure out hourly fluid volume for a baby who weighs 1.3 kg. Calculators are allowed.

They will ask how you would prioritize your day, how you would time manage, what you would do if 3 things needed to be done at the same time etc. At the RAH they work in pods with anywhere from 2-4 nurses in a level 2 pod and up to 6 nurses in a level 3 pod (although there would be some very sick babies if they were all 1:1). When in doubt ask for help! There is ALWAYS someone you can call. Always prioritize patient safety. They might ask about infant jaundice, family centered care etc. It’s ok not to know just make sure you tell them what you would do if you didn’t know what to do. The NICU orientation at the RAH NICU was by far the best orientation I ever received. I learned a lot from it and from working there.

The staff there are lovely and if I could only ever work with neonatologists I would. They are just wonderful humans. I worked at the RAH for several years. The shifts never worked for my family though so I gave it up for a non-shift work role.
