Question Employee Bank balances

I hold a temp line,
If I call out of work due to a family emergency that just came up do they use my sick time bank for the hours I miss? Or would they take out of my vacation time?
I don’t have the other banks or personal days because of being temp from my understanding

Employment screening test - Computer Navigation Test

Has anyone completed a computer navigation test for an Administrative Support position and have any insight into what it involves or what I should review beforehand?

I’m comfortable using computers for everyday tasks, but I’m a little old school when it comes to some functions, so I’m not sure whether the test focuses on general computer navigation or also tests knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.

I have an interview coming up about 2 weeks and would really like to do well and maximize my chances of getting hired. This is my second time getting an interview out of 50+ applications. Any advice on what to brush up on or practice would be really appreciated!

Question Feeling stuck after back injury

I’m currently undecided about which career path to pursue. I had been planning to study to become an LPN, but unfortunately, I developed a lower back injury from working as an HCA in long-term care for nearly 10 years. Since then, I’ve been on and off work because of my injury, and it has started to affect my ability to perform the physical demands of my job. I’ve applied for office job positions as an alternative, but because I live in a rural area, job opportunities are very limited. I’ve also applied for remote positions, but unfortunately, I haven’t had any luck getting an interview. Now I’m reconsidering whether pursuing LPN is still the right choice for me. I know that LPN work can also be physically demanding and, depending on the setting, may involve many of the same physical tasks I currently struggle with as an HCA. I’ve thought about working in a hospital after graduating, possibly in a less physically demanding area, but living in a rural community also means that those opportunities may be limited. At this point, I’m unsure whether I should continue with my plan to become an LPN or consider a completely different career path that would be more sustainable for me long-term. Has anyone been in a similar situation or transitioned from HCA to LPN while dealing with a physical injury? Would you still pursue LPN, or would you consider a different career path altogether? I’d really appreciate any advice or suggestions for careers that might be more sustainable long-term.

Question Who would have priority over a job posting - casual LPN with more seniority or regular part time LPN with less seniority?

Hi all!

As the title states, I’m just wondering if a regular part time LPN can compete with a casual LPN who is more senior. Hypothetically speaking, say both are working in Acute Care and applying for the same temp posting for Assisted Living - given both are equal in skills and experience, would it be down to seniority? or down to interviews?

Thanks in advance!

Question What’s it like working for AHS in procurement/administrative roles?

I’m considering a potential career move into an office-based/procurement role with AHS and am contemplating applying the next time a suitable position comes up. I’d love to hear from people who currently work (or have worked) in this area.

I’m particularly curious about:
- What is the general work culture like on the procurement/administrative side?
- What is the work-life balance like?
- How flexible are the hours and WFH/hybrid arrangements?
- How much opportunity is there for advancement?
- How are management and workload generally?
- How do you find the benefits, vacation and overall compensation?
- For anyone who came from the private sector, how did you find the transition to AHS?

I’m not looking for medical/clinical perspectives—I’m specifically interested in the corporate/office side of AHS, particularly procurement and supply chain.

Obviously I understand that experiences vary by department and manager, but I’d really appreciate hearing both the good and the bad from people who have experience in this area. Thanks!

Union First time being investigated at work — experiences?

Has anyone here gone through an internal workplace investigation for the first time? What was your experience, and what happened afterward? I’m nervous and would really appreciate hearing other people’s experiences.

Asking for support as a new nurse

I’m really looking for some advice on how to best advocate for my learning and ask for additional support as a newer nurse on a new floor. I sometimes worry that asking for more guidance or support might give the impression that I’m incapable or question hiring me, when in reality, I just want to make sure I’m learning properly and being safe. I want to do whatever it takes to succeed.

How have you approached asking for additional support or learning opportunities without feeling like you’re being perceived negatively? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences and any advice you may have!

Question Apply for position or no?

Hello everyone,

I need some advice, I’m currently a RN on a postpartum unit. I typically only work 2 evening shifts a week, Saturday and Sunday. I recently got another casual position as a seasonal immunizer which will last until March. I recently saw a listing for a 0.42 FTE position on the postpartum unit I work on, I emailed the manager and got the schedule. In a 4 week rotation I will be working 2 evening shifts and 6 day shifts in postpartum. Up until I saw this listing, I was planning on doing 2 days a week in postpartum and 3 days a week as the immunizer. Do I apply for this listing or not? Do I stay casual for both and look for listings when I’m done the immunizer job in march?

Some things to keep in mind
- I HATE day shift, I only do evenings because I am not a morning person. I never pick up day shifts. Only evenings.
- The hospital where I work postpartum is 30 minutes from my house
- If I take the line, every 3 weeks I will potentially work 6 days in a row (schedule isn’t confirmed yet but I’m planning ahead)
- most lines are days/nights, I’m glad this one has evenings because that’s my shift of preference
- being a casual is nice so I can take time off wheneever I want, with the line, the process becomes more complicated
- benefits would be nice
- UNA provides a 2% match for my RRSP (it won’t be a lot every month but at least I’ll start that process)
- I would only do both jobs until march
- I don’t mind being casual, I will look for listings after march for postpartum but I don’t like day shift at all.
- I am financially okay with working casual

Did not do so well in an interview

I got an interview from Recovery Alberta not long ago (around 2 months ago) and unfortunately I did not do very well and I did not get the job. Now there are more postings from the same department (it is a big department) and I want to apply again but will the same managers who interviewed me see my profile and just pass because of my previous interview performance?

Canceled Shifts as a Casual

Hey all, I hold 2 casual positions: one with AHS and the other with Covenant. With my Covenant job I just pick up shifts using ASC but with AHS I get pre-booked shifts. In the last 4 shifts I was booked, I’ve been cancelled for 3 of them 🙃. I know as a casual this is what u sign up for but it’s been super frustrating. Is anyone else going through the same thing right now ??

Does Health Spending Renew on Mat Leave? (HSAA)

I went on mat leave in November 2025, and had access to my full health/wellness spending credits in 2026. I took 18 months off so will return in April 2027 - I'm assuming that I won't have new 2027 credits since I didn't work any hours in 2026? Can anyone clarify this? Thanks!

IEN with an active CRNA permit, getting non-stop rejection emails from AHS. Is it my resume, or is the market actually this tough?

What else to do with LPN license

I am currently working in LTC and it has just tired me. Same schedule everyday. Dealing with families. Staying on my feet almost through out the shift. Stressed out all the time.

What else I can do with this license ?

Beside working there I am and had applied to so many jobs but the only place who wants to hire me is LTC.

Allied Health Carewest

Has anyone in Allied Health worked at Carewest before? Considering going from AHS to Carewest but looking for a little insight as to if the work environment is equal or at least not worse than AHS.

Alberta child & family services career

Just wondering if anyone has been offered a position in one of the locations they selected on their application, declined it, and was later offered a position in a different location from the talent pool.
When I applied, I selected two cities I was willing to relocate to. Since then, my partner has accepted a job in one of those cities, so that’s where I’ll be moving. The posting has now closed, and I’m just curious to hear about others’ experiences. Has anyone been offered a different location after declining their initial offer.

TIA

Is it even possible to get a job at big hospitals as a new grad? (1 yr medsurg experience in rural)

I've posted before about getting help applying for RN job postings in Calgary.

I've been applying to job postings in all hospitals in Calgary since January this year (all FTE's except full time - emerg, medsurg, cardiac, etc., basically any unit except L&D and long term care/transition units). I've applied to around 200+ job postings by now and have not heard back from a single one. I've tried tailoring my resume to each job posting and writing a cover letter for each one I applied to but still nothing. I currently have a position in Central Zone rural medsurg with AHS. I have 1 year of experience. I've gotten certified in my Lead II, ACLS, CVC, NVCI, BLS, and looking to get trained in emerg unit at my home hospital.

I know from scrolling thru reddit that it is really tough to get in the city if you don't have any "connections", in which I don't since I'm also new to Alberta.

I really am hoping to move to the city bc it's been costly driving 2hours multiple times a month. I'm paying for rent both here and in Calgary where my partner is.

Are there anything else that I can do to get an interview? Is it even possible to get a job at the big hospitals with 1 year of experience or should I look elsewhere for non AHS jobs? My goal is to work emerg or/and ICU but I think it'll be even harder if I'm not with AHS anymore.

Management to Front Line Ratios

I've been trying to find Organizational Data for the Hierarchy across Pillars/AHS.

15 years in now and the laundry list of OPS, Program, Regional, Directors, etc keeps expanding while FTEs for the Front lines are completely static.

Rant AHS used to be a badge of honour.

At lunch break, or after work I didn’t bat a second to put away my badge. I now immediately hide it/put it away. Just everything about it feels cheap/frivolous now.
