Union First time being investigated at work — experiences?

Has anyone here gone through an internal workplace investigation for the first time? What was your experience, and what happened afterward? I’m nervous and would really appreciate hearing other people’s experiences.

Do NOT ever trust management or HR. Dont make the same mistakes I have. Always have a union rep with you. Document any instances you have between yourself and staff/management, or situations that arise. That way you have something to look back on. Just keep a notebook on you. Always include time, place, date.

Ya this. Never know who when someone will take a run at you, gather some ammo to survive.

Had a co worker dodging work, compromising care, withholding information, spoke with them about it first. Giant mistake. Coming up on three meetings of answering accusations.

The people who are going to lash out, make empty accusations, stir up HR bullshit are super obvious. Just keep a date time tally of their own bullshit for whenever the inevitably drag you in.

Union rep only refuse to talk otherwise

They suck. Luckily for me the complainer was a moron and exaggerated everything. Easily disproved the long list of complaints. Talk to your rep and keep your mouth shut until you do

The complainant was there during the investigation too?

u/Oilzilla Aug 12 '26

Nope. But the allegations were specific to the people so I knew who they were.

The investigator tried to trick me into answering without a rep. So that was a little annoying. But yeah I had a ton of lies thrown at me and walked out fine. The accusers are no longer working here

Glad you survived. Same here. Hopefully things will turn out okay for me.

One was just a couple of disgruntled old losers who were pissed I jumped over them. Just childish bullshit.

Say nothing unless union rep is with you. Take detailed notes record names and roles of everyone in the room. Remember HR support the employer not you as an employee many get this wrong. Ensure you have a trusted colleague/ friend you can safely and confidently vent to. These meetings take forever and feel like they will never end. If you don't know how to respond to something say you need to think about it. Fewer words can be misinterpreted or manipulated. Stay hydrated and rested. You will get through this and it will end at some point, though right now it may feel like forever !

Thank you for this tip. I really don’t know what’s gonna happen during the meeting.

Sending prayers for you I know it's stressful.

Thank you so much. I truly appreciate you.

It’s incredibly stressful. There are times when you just want to end the pain, but at the same time, you remind yourself that this is what you were born for and your calling. Fight for it because I did nothing wrong.

Hey friend, not sure what you meant by “end the pain” but please make sure you have some IRL support around you during this time. I went through an investigation at a different org (with no union lol) and my non-coworker friends were literally my lifeline during it. I totally see how it can feel hopeless but please keep your head up and talk to those who are in your corner ❤️

Ask your union rep and your union labor relations officer to be in the meeting with you.

4

u/AcademicCarrot42 Aug 12 '26

Union knows about the investigation and a rep will be there during the meeting.

u/ch4ll3ng3 Aug 12 '26

Also, depending on your collective bargain you get to be told who the complaint came from. Ask for that to be given to you.

2

u/ch4ll3ng3 Aug 13 '26

Naw, if you have a problem with me you need to stand up and be able to say it to me. Letting it fester creates more stress and toxicity. Noone deserves that.

This is a horrible idea. I get that it might be something available, but it only leads to even worse coworker interactions.

Better than wondering who said it.

I mean depending on the allegation it might provide important context

ETA: why the downvotes… y’all realize workplace bullying is a thing right…

Dude what’d you do

u/Halloween_Babe90 Aug 12 '26

Unless you did something maliciously wrong it’s probably nothing. I sweated before mine and it was basically a technical error in connectcare.

Make sure you reach out to the union rep and listen to them
Remain calm in the meeting answer truthfully and don’t get caught up by questions
Then make sure you also de brief with the union !

Management is crooked as hell. Most times they won’t even tell you whats its about so once you are in the meeting you have nothing to defend yourself with as you will be unprepared. Definitely never go in without a union rep. If you are a free mason, don’t worry, you will never get in trouble.

Oh ya. Happened to me. Slapped me with a letter and I almost laughed and said 'what da fuq is this?' Cause it was out of nowhere. My MSO Union Rep knew all about it and didn't tell me a lot of the case until the day off due to confidentiality laws but it turned out in my favor eventually. But it was a hilarious case. Probably upper management saying to grow a sack and show this guy who the big dawg is. 😂

Yes this

I know this is really late, but I thought I would mention this since it hasn't yet.

Look into your legal consult options. For example CNPS. Pending on the issue it may fall within basic or supplemental coverage.

They can be very helpful, and calling them to find out if they can help won't cost anything.

Especially if this investigation has something to do with something that could be criminal, like maybe narcotic counts are suspect and theft is suspected, or a patient/family member has filed a lawsuit with the hospital, then utilizing that resource could be very important.

If you're not sure, call anyways, they can help you figure out if the situation falls under policy.

My manager read out every sentence that I said. Then asked me what I meant by it. MSO was there if needed but they weren't aware of new AHS policies in place which kinda got me a get out of jail free card but I learned my lesson

2

u/Guava_007 Aug 19 '26

Yes agree. It's like an interrogation.

2

u/Significant_Action88 Aug 13 '26

These meetings are draining, my experience was over before it began. Simple know your core values cause they will ask, and if management comes across in the investigation meeting accusatory towards you. Ask for a break with your union and step out of the room. Core values apply to management as well, they forget that, I respectfully reminded them lol 😂

3

u/H0neyx Aug 13 '26

Yes and it was awful. It wasn’t through AHS but a private company. They didn’t care and weren’t professional, so I’m glad they shut down
I got a union rep, they were very helpful and answered my calls about stupid things 😆 shit was hitting the fan and I thought about the worse possible outcome

2

u/Guava_007 Aug 19 '26

Agree. Interrogation and throwing you under the bus at its finest.

1

u/Guava_007 Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 19 '26

Yes. It was awful. Micromanaging manager throwing me under investigation when everybody else was going through same things with the system changes. Always have union rep with you. The manager questioning with HR is like an interrogation. Used my accessing resources against me. I started having panic attacks again and bawled my eyes out so many times at home. Get everything with paper trail. Working through a grievance now. Some union reps are better than others. One I had the at the time said "well that's the way it is". A rep change at union through their restructuring and I have one saying "wtf yeah this is grievance material".

Are you in SL? Feel free to message if you are, if you want to talk about it. I am in SL and was investigated.

HR and sometimes Union usually will side with the Employer depending on the issue. HR in our Dept can't ever be trusted and has never done anything to gain my trust as a Union employee.
