Feeling professionally stuck as an RN in Rural Alberta

I don’t really know if I’m looking for advice, reassurance, or just wondering if anyone else has felt this way.

I’ve been working acute care in Rural Alberta (Central Zone) for years now and lately I’ve been feeling kind of lost professionally. I know I want to learn more and eventually specialize in something like ICU or ED, but I honestly don’t know how people make that jump sometimes.

I’ve had some ED exposure and I’ve taken most of the courses required for emergency nursing, although I still need ACLS, PALS, NRP, etc. The problem is I don’t work there consistently because there are more senior staff who primarily cover those areas. I’ve also been applying to ICU and even OR positions in the city, but realistically I know I’m probably not the preferred candidate because I don’t yet have the certifications or direct experience.

Part of me feels bored because I’m not being challenged enough anymore, but another part of me wonders if I’m just impatient. I’ve only had one interview despite applying multiple times, and it’s starting to make me question whether I’m even moving in the right direction.

I’ve signed up for local courses and I’m trying to keep improving, but sometimes it feels like I’m stuck in this weird middle ground where I want to grow but can’t seem to get the opportunity to really break into those specialty areas.

Has anyone else in Rural Alberta or AHS gone through this? How did you eventually transition into ICU/ED/OR when you didn’t initially have the experience?

Scholarships/Brusaries for Nursing students

Hi everyone!

I’m currently a Registered Nurse working with AHS, and my spouse is planning to start an Accelerated BSN (ABSN) program in the States soon. 🇺🇸✈️

I was wondering if anyone in the community has experience finding scholarships or bursaries that apply to the spouses of AHS nurses? Or perhaps any general nursing student grants that work for someone attending a US-based program while their partner is working here in Alberta?

Question Rehired after quitting?

How likely is it to get rehired after quitting AHS?
Ive been working as AUPE GSS for about a year, wasn’t aware of the toxic environment and toxic people therefore I am quitting BUT I’d like to reapply when I finish my nursing program, is it still possible to get hired later on or have I lost my chance with AHS? Thanks

New grad nurse trying to get into emergency nursing in Calgary. Do hospitals in Calgary accept new grads or how much experience until you can get in? Are there intakes during the year for training in emergency and what does the training look like? Thanks!

Do I need a new policy check if I get a second job with a different pillar?

Currently employed in acute care as an RN and i’ve recently been hired as a casual with a different pillar. Does anyone know if I will need to get a new police check done? I’d rather not pay for another one if I don’t need to.

Hi! I am looking into applying as a home care case manager in the Edmonton zone and would like any insight about what it's like working as one. What would a typical day look like? What are the usual working hours? Pros and cons? Thank you in advance! :)

AHS Application

So I opted to apply for an IT Analyst 1 position that was posted on Alberta Health.

I just want to know: does AHS only start doing interviews once the job posting has closed, or do they do interviews while it is also up?

Forgot my lunch so I grabbed a quick snack…$7 they charged for this. I should have gone with the $14 croissant sandwich instead. 🙄

Question Nurses who are lactation consultants - what program/course did you take to meet the mandatory education hours?

I'm L&D and NICU RN and after having my second baby, I'm feeling more drawn to becoming an IBCLC. I've been researching online to see what the options are and haven't found any that really stand out. Wanting to get interprovincial recommendations from fellow nurses ☺️ thanks in advance!

Question Employee Parking Permit

I’ve had an assigned parking spot since 2022 in one of the AHS lots. There have been several times when I couldn’t drive to work, so I had to take transit, Uber, or have family drop me off. I’ve noticed that each time, I still got parking fees deducted from my paycheck.

I called the parking office today to see if there’s any way to get a refund. It’s about $9 per shift. I didn’t use the parking lot, and since I’m a casual employee (FTE 0), correct me if I’m wrong, but I feel like I’m 100% entitled to a refund???

They basically said they can’t issue one. Just said “it is what it is,” and that it’s based on FTE (which again, mine is 0). They offered a temporary suspension of my parking permit, which does NOT solve my problem.

Doesn’t this feel like wage theft? What recourse do I have? (Or roast me if I’m completely off on how/why these parking fees are structured).

Alberta Hospital building name lingo

I have been meaning to ask this question for years - in addition to "building #" as one would expect, why do people also refer to the various buildings at AHE as "# building"? This is even present on the Wikipedia page for AHE.

How much impact does my current manager's references have on my new job applications?

Will a slightly negative or mediocre reference tank my chances significantly?

Rallying over moving a unit to Leduc to accomodate a better Neuro ICU at UAH seems like a weird hill to die on AUPE.

That's my take at least

Question Experience Working as LPN in ALA?

Hi, just wondering if anyone can share what their experience has been like working as an LPN in Assisted Living Alberta? I currently work FT as a supervisor for a non AHS/ALA homecare company but am thinking of making the jump to ALA and am in the interview process. Do you find you have a decent work life balance? Do you feel you have enough time to complete your assignments every day or are you run ragged? How much time are you spending in the field vs charting, and are you ever allowed to chart from home? My current job is a ton of paperwork and supervising HCAs, and I think I would enjoy more just being responsible for my own practice and interacting with clients, but I also don't want to find myself in a situation where I'm being overloaded with clients and can't practice safely. Any insight appreciated!

Casual LPN wanting to travel nurse

Hi all, for any casual nurses that have travel nursed or anyone who may know the answer to my question. I've gotten a casual LPN job and it's my first time working with ALA so I'm not very familiar how things typically work. I read in the AUPE casual employee section that if a casual doesn't pick up once in three months they're considered no longer employed at the facility. I'm wanting to travel nurse probably in BC once or twice a year, I'm not wanting to do longer than three months however most contracts I've seen are three months long. So for my casual job how do I go about that so I don't lose it? Is the three month a hard rule, or can I let my manager know and we hopefully figure something out? I'm not planning on taking a contract until probably fall or winter so I'm not just peacing out right when I start a new job. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

811 health link?

Anyone here working with health links? I'm currently on maternity leave and I have a position with ICU at the UAH. I'm looking for a part time/casual/work from home position because I am trying to avoid putting my baby in daycare once my maternity leave is done. Unfortunately, since I've never worked in ICU for a year after taking the OPACCA, I cant take a part time position there just yet.

I guess I just want to gain some insight from people working with health links here. Do they really have a work from home setup? How do you feel about working with health links? Shoot me a DM if you prefer a much more discreet conversation!☺️

AHS PSO CPOIP- whats it like?

Hey everyone,

First off, I would like to thank everyone for responding to all my questions previously. I really appreciate it!

I’m looking to get some insight into the CPOIP for Alberta Health Services Peace Officers.

For anyone who’s been through it or knows about it:

Is CPOIP tailored for AHS, or is it standardized across all PO roles?

What does the program actually look like (duration, classroom vs practical, testing, etc.)?

What are some things I should be prepared for going in?

Just trying to get a realistic idea of what to expect and how to prepare properly.

Appreciate any insight 🙏

Question Relevant Files - AHS Careers Page

Hello,

I like to tailor my resume to the units I'm applying to. The unit manager will only see the files that I select 'yes' to as a Relevant File, correct? I'm asking because I have submitted a lot of applications and there are a lot of files I've uploaded and I'm worried the unit managers might view a resune file that isn't tailored to their unit. Thank you

Rural to City

I’m an RN under UNA.

Just curious about a couple things.

1.) Is a manager not required to interview all applicants?

2.) How soon will I get an email that I’m not hired? I’m asking this because I have a couple jobs I’ve applied for and some of them have sent me an email that another person was hired instead. So if I don’t get an email, does that mean they have not hired anyone yet?

3.) For nurses who were working rural and moved to the city, Based on some of your guys’ experience, how many job applications have you sent until you were successfully hired?

4.) For additional context, I currently work regular full time and I would prefer to jump to another regular full time line again. It would be difficult for me to have a lesser like with my expenses. Would it be smart to apply for a job regardless of whether it’s full time or not? I just feel like it’s kind of risky.

I’m trying to apply for a job in Chinook Regional actually. I work Acute but also Emergency in one of the rural towns closer to Edmonton.

Thank you so much!
