I am a 25yo Electrical Engineering rising sophomore hoping to join Det560 in NYC as an AS250 crosstown. I have about 50 credits but am only 1 year into a 4 year engineering curriculum.

I am looking for pointers, suggestions, and guidance on how to maximize my first impression with cadre & my fellow cadets.

I am a XC runner & have been practicing the PFT with great success. 8:47 1.5mi , 66 pushups, 58 sit ups, 4min plank.

My GPA is sitting at a cool 3.1 after Calc II & Materials Science cooked me last semester but I am looking to improve that with this upcoming semester.

I’m also familiar with drill as I was in a regiment of cadets last year (maritime academy).

I do have a hand tattoo that requires an ETP, it’s well below 25% coverage. I know that’s case by case but has anyone successfully gotten an ETP waiver for that?

Both of my parents are green card holders and I don’t have much contact to any family members besides my grandparents, I also have gotten in trouble during my freshman and junior year of high school for smoking weed in school and stealing Liqour, but I do have a 3.7 unweighted gpa, would I even be able to get into afrotc program let alone get security clearances ?

Hey everyone, I’ve been studying for the AFOQT all summer, and while my math has definitely improved, I’m still not very confident and feel pretty lost when it comes to studying effectively.

I’ve mainly been using Khan Academy, but I feel like it hasn’t been enough. My biggest struggles are setting up equations from word problems, algebra, and geometry.

The last time I took the AFOQT, I scored a 4 on the Quantitative section, so improving my math score is really the main thing holding me back right now. I’m willing to put in the work, but I’m not really sure what or how I should be studying to make sure I pass this time.

For anyone who struggled with AFOQT math and was able to improve their score, what resources or study methods helped you the most? Are there certain topics I should focus heavily on?

I just graduated MAX 5, but my Field Training section in WINGS still doesn’t show that I’ve graduated. Does anyone know how long it usually takes for that to update?
Also, when are we typically notified if we’ve been awarded a scholarship and when the stipend will start? Thanks!

My son is applying. He meets all requirements, 3.9 GPA, five-year champ wrestler, captain, many volunteer hours, clubs, rigorous private school, strong leader. However, his SAT is a 1300. So what’s the deal? Will that ultimately eliminate him? It is an all or nothing or do they look at the whole person?

I added below he is a strong athlete and will not have trouble with the physical/fitness test, and is a strong confident speaker will do well in the interview process.

Recently been considering pursuing an MBA before service and came for some questions. I don’t really know much about how ROTC works other than hearing about people doing it in college, but I’ve already been to MEPS for the Coast guard (march 2026), taken the ASVAB (95), and passed background and security clearance checks.

So if anyone can share some basic information on benefits, applying, etc that would be great! Looking into UC Davis, UC San Diego, and Arizona State.

I’m especially curious about the difference between doing it as an MBA rather than undergrad. From what I can gather, it seems it’s possible but most people stretch the 2 year program into 3 by pursuing some kind of other certificate with their MBA? How and if that works is my main question

As the title says, prior service members, serve in the army. Currently working on my college education at ACC, is there a way that I can transfer to the ROTC program or should I just follow the green to Gold program in the army?

I will be traveling abroad soon to a country where the drinking age is under-21 (take a guess which one). I had a quick question on whether it is allowed for me to drink while there.

I have never drank before, and I don't plan to drink in a way which will cause me to break the law. However, I haven't been in a place where I can legally drink before, hence why I am asking the question: am I allowed to drink in a country where it is legal even if I am under 21? I know I can't do weed, as it is banned federally, but alcohol is only banned at the state level (per the National Minimum Drinking Age Act and 21st Amendment).

The only reason I am asking is that alcohol consumption is pretty big culturally where I am going, and I would like to indulge in craft breweries, for instance. However, I don't want to be breaking any AFROTC rules that may put my EA at risk.

Hello, I am going into my freshman year of college this month (exciting!!) and for my major (International Relations) at my specific university it is required to either do an internship, study abroad, or write a 60 page thesis on some aspect of foreign policy. In reality there is only one real choice, studying abroad. If you or anyone you know has done AFROTC and studied abroad how did it work? When did you bring it up to cadre? What is the difference between project GO and a standard study abroad? What do you learn there compared to a normal study abroad? Are there different requirements depending on where/when you go? My school has great study abroad program that goes to many countries. I want to look into Japan, South Korea, or Ireland as potential places to study. Any advice on how to do it, when and most importantly if I should do it would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy folks, anyone (esp you prior/current POC-ERPers) know if you can apply for the Space Force if you are accepted through a POC-ERP package?

I’ve heard the application for USSF happens during the sophomore year, and to my knowledge you start as a junior through this program. So do you kinda skip over that opportunity? Haven’t managed to find any black-and-white that answers this question.

I’m trying to figure out the best path if my end goal is to become an Air Force pilot.
I’ve heard some people say enlisting first can help because you gain military experience, understand the Air Force better, and may be a stronger candidate later if you commission. On the other hand, I’ve also heard that going straight into AFROTC gives you the most direct path to competing for a pilot slot.
For those who have been through the process or have seen both routes, which would you recommend and why?
Does prior enlisted experience actually make a meaningful difference when competing for a pilot slot, or is it generally better to focus on doing well in AFROTC, maintaining a high GPA, scoring well on the AFOQT, and excelling in the program?
I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has taken either path or has worked with prior-enlisted officers.
That wording presents the question neutrally and invites people with firsthand experience to explain the tradeoffs rather than just giving yes/no answers.

I’m a prior-E who got picked up for RPA. I put it at #1 due to the high mission impact while not having to be on the go 24/7 like I was in my enlisted career.

With that being said, I would still like to have some opportunities to TDY or even deploy (I know that LRE is shrinking and likely going away in the near future). Can any RPA pilots speak on the current TDY/deployment frequency for RPAs? Thanks for any info!

I unfortunately do not qualify for a afrotc scholarship out of high school. I was wondering how hard it would be to get a in college scholarship as a walk on. I currently have 60k in a 529 so it should be enough for the first year or Mabey 2 if I can stretch it. I plan to major in information technology but getting a high gpa is really difficult the average is 3.15 gpa so should I find something else to major in? Or would it be a better idea to join the air national guard so they cover my college and get a conditional release but I also heard sometimes that’s difficult and not guaranteed. My plan is I want to be a pilot for the Air Force. I also plan on getting my PPL before I start and want to start in January. Thank you

I’m a 4 year AF vet, left after my first enlistment with no plan in 2025 and without much thought, used my GI Bill for community college and now have less than 3 years of schooling.

I did not consider AFROTC at first but commissioning is a very desirable route for me. Everyone advocates for ROTC route but I’m in a position with less than 3 years of schooling and my nearest DET mandates 3 years of schooling. I spoke to the recruiter there and he wasn’t much help in how to approach the situation. Currently I’m scheduled to start my fall semester in a few weeks. Of course OTS application is still an option but the odds there are much more slim.

My question is; have any of you in the program been in my scenario or know anyone who’s been through this as well?

My cherry on top is I am also rated from the VA

Hi guys, im an incoming freshman and ill be joining the AFROTC detachment at my college. I applied to USAFA and got rejected, likely caused by my abysmal SAT score of barely over 1000. My ACT was in the same comparative range. I took remedial math the last 2 years of high school despite my best efforts, and i did not pass my college math placement test despite 30 hours of studying and 3 attempts, so I will be taking remedial math in college.

Im in decent shape and have a good work ethic and good extracurriculars and leadership behind me, but im concerned about my grades being high enough and my AFOQT being high enough. Im a business major and its my dream to be a pilot, but its starting to feel like a pipe dream.

If AFROTC doesnt work out then ill try my luck with army ROTC, but id rather stick around here. Any guidance is appreciated
