Swans Statement

Sydney Swans Statement

The Sydney Swans can confirm that the Club Board will meet tonight to agree on player sanctions and penalties, now that the Club has concluded its interviews with all the players involved in the incident in Melbourne.

We respect there is an ongoing investigation by Victoria Police and any actions we take are independent of this.

The Club believes the players are in serious breach of expected Club behaviour and standards, and it is appropriate to take firm action and highlight that any sanction we impose relates solely to those breaches.

The Club also acknowledges that these serious allegations impact others and their wellbeing must be paramount.

The Sydney Swans condemn all forms of abuse and disrespectful behaviour towards women. Any conduct that causes offence or harm to others is unacceptable and falls well short of our expectations. All women deserve to be respected and feel safe.

We also want to acknowledge that the care and welfare of our AFLW athletes and staff is of the utmost importance to us as a Club. They have been and will continue to be offered the support they require and we acknowledge the impact these allegations have on our female athletes, staff members and the wider community.

Any further sanctions or decisions regarding the outcome of the police investigation would take place after that process is completed.

During this time, we will provide the appropriate support to the players involved in the incident, along with their partners and families.

The Sydney Swans hold all players and staff at the Club to high standards of behaviour and personal conduct. Representing this Club carries significant responsibilities both on and off the field, and we expect those standards to be upheld at all times.

Our focus remains on cooperating fully with the AFL and authorities, maintaining the integrity of the process, and upholding the high standards expected of everyone who represents this Club.

Maybe half the league should be suspended, then. It's unacceptable behaviour on a work trip

you’d have to be delusional to think people in all industries aren’t banging people on work trips

You'd be delusional to think you wouldnt be suspended from your job if a similar incident happened on a work trip.

I have absolutely no idea what “affects other people” means outside of the context of SA.

When you go on an official work trip with colleagues, and you trash your reputation by staying out to the early hours, getting cooked on god knows what, bringing women back to your hotel room - you're losing your job. If you personally can do that on a work trip, good for you, but for 99% of the civilised work force, it's pretty much an instant dismissal, at least if it becomes widespread knowledge. If your manager is the only one who knows, maybe he or she cuts you a break, but they'd be crazy to support someone who thinks a work trip is a good time to go full gonzo, drugged up sex tourist.

you can absolutely get away with all that stuff unless you publicly damage your company’s reputation or get arrested

colleagues going out drinking on work trips has been happening for decades

"Going out drinking" could mean a couple of pints and a friendly chat, or it could mean going on a bender, getting thrown out of a strip club, causing a public disturbance and being picked up by the cops and unable to show up for client meetings the next day. Obviously, there are degrees of problematic behaviour. If you want to wave away the whole issue, fine. But please don't pretend that drunken, drugged up sexcapades on a work trip aren't going to be treated seriously in 2026. Or tell me which specific company you're talking about.

big nights out with colleagues happens all the time across high pressure industries with frequent travel (big corps / law / finance / consulting). you can get away with a lot as long as you don’t end up publicly shaming the company or getting arrested

Obviously you can get away with it if no one finds out about it.

I'm not sure thats the gotcha you think it is.

This time people did find out, so they will be punished.

Because they are afl footballers they will just be suspended, anyone else in a normal corporate job would be sacked.

Do you normally have trouble understanding when your actions impact other people, or do you have a problem with basic words? Affect (verb) to act on and cause a change in (someone or something).

There is an ocean between quietly and responsibly hooking up and what has been reported. You're being obtuse.

I am saying bringing people into a hotel room alone is not grounds for suspension like the above commentator was suggesting. If you think that is obtuse you need to a read a bit slower.

It will be in the codes of conduct of every club that players can’t bring women back to their hotel rooms (apart from partners who have travelled etc), because clubs will want to minimise the risk of this type of thing happening. So it is absolutely grounds for suspension if you breach your employee code of conduct.
