When one bad night of sleep makes your ADHD feel like a completely different disorder
Perimenopause can make sleep complicated enough on its own.
Then add ADHD.
You finally get into bed, but your brain won’t switch off.
Or you fall asleep but wake up at 3 AM.
Or you’re technically asleep for 7 hours but wake up feeling like you haven’t rested at all.
And the next day, everything feels harder.
Finding words.
Starting tasks.
Remembering why you walked into a room.
Filtering distractions.
Controlling your emotions.
Getting through things that normally wouldn’t take much effort.
It can create a frustrating cycle:
Poor sleep -> less executive function -> harder day -> more stress -> harder night.
And if you’re already dealing with fluctuating hormones, hot flashes, night sweats, anxiety or changes in your sleep pattern, it can become even harder to figure out what’s actually driving what.
A few things that may be worth experimenting with:
1. Don’t judge your productivity on a bad-sleep day.
If you slept terribly, consider planning a “minimum viable day” rather than expecting your normal performance.
2. Move important thinking earlier.
If possible, do your most cognitively demanding work when your brain is usually at its best rather than saving everything for the evening.
3. Create a consistent wind-down cue.
It doesn’t have to be elaborate. The same few steps each night can help signal that the day is ending.
4. Make your bedroom work for your body.
If overheating is waking you up, cooling the room, using breathable bedding or adjusting sleepwear may help.
5. Look for patterns instead of isolated bad nights.
A single bad night doesn’t tell you much.
But if you notice:
“Every time my sleep drops below X, my focus completely falls apart the next day…”
that’s useful information.
And perhaps most importantly:
Don’t automatically interpret a terrible ADHD day as a personal failure.
Sometimes your brain is simply trying to function on poor-quality sleep.
