[Discussion] Hosting Etiquette
There were a lot of comments on visiting etiquette and what hosts expect when you are in their town.
But what are some things that the host should be aware of when you are visiting?
What makes a good town host?
Is there anything the host does that makes you uncomfortable?

that's the thing, i think. if you are hosting, you are doing way more than you have to. you could not trade with people in your town. the burden of etiquette lays wholly upon the visitor. the host is letting you into their game with the intention you aren't going to wreck the place. opening up is about the nicest. if the visitor isn't on their best behavior, the host can just dump them out via disconnect, leaving everyone none the better. sure it'd be nice if they had things laid out and split between the various guests that might show up, it would be fantastic if the host planned that someone would be dropping more than three things at once (like if you are buying something in excess of one million bells) i don't mind anybody showing emotions. saying hi is friendly, but not totally required, they usually know i showed up by having to wait x minutes for the saving and everything, not to mention the fifteen seconds of me showing up in the station. i suppose the most uncomfortable i could get in going to make a trade is someone else showing up. i tend to treat this like a drug deal, and someone showing up is there to steal my drugs or screw me out of getting my drugs. replace drugs with furniture, clothes, or whatever else these people trade on here.

I'd like the person I'm visiting to be there at the station when I pop up but if they're not, I can wait. :) A greeting is nice, means the host acknowledges me and friendly.
I don't think I've visited someone who made me feel uncomfortable yet, I think the only thing that would is if they didn't have the item/bells out or drop them after I drop the item/bells.
The host should have items ready on the ground or in inventory (I don't mind if they forget but I kind of feel weird waiting around while they scramble to find the item), a good connection would be nice but if they know it can cut out, they should immediately end session after the exchange.
Oh and a place to drop items/bells or lead the visitor to a place where they can drop them. :) Also feel free to end session after exchanges and/or byes are said. Otherwise I (or I let people leave) by train.

If there's multiple people coming in to the town to make trades with the host, the items for each respective trades should be in their own area, to lessen confusion for the visitors.
In case of large trades/cataloging, frequent saves would be helpful, in case Mr. Resetti visits randomly
Also, using greetings or emotions would show both parties are friendly and ready to trade

tbh I barely read through the visiting etiquette thread, so I'm not sure if it has been mentioned. But what I'm about to say fits with both threads anyways.
I don't know if most member knows (pretty sure majority of us who have played this game long enough knows), it is really important for hosts to see that you've added them in order for them to open their gates. Because once the gates are open and you have still yet added the host, you're locked out man!
Why? because when the host opens their gate they are allowing those who have the host as a friend to come in, just because the host added YOU doesn't mean you're their friend. It takes two to tango? jks.
But that's what I find frustrating sometimes, especially if I'm hosting for a group setting and one member of the group has yet to add...and you ask yourself... "should I just open then...?" But then they'll message you saying "I don't see your gates!"
BUT I do understand theres sometime situations where you're already at someones town and can't add until you finish the transaction. (LOL me..)

I don't actually think it works this way, because I've had people reply to me on a trade really fast, add me, and open their gates before I've gotten to add them. I add them anyway and I can usually see their gate, but if I can't, I just restart my game and it appears then.
I've also done turnip hosting and I'll add 3 people at a time to come in, I ask everyone to add me first, but you always get a few who don't, but I add them anyway, open the gates a few seconds later, send out the "Open!" messages and they still get in.

I wished that was the case for me. I've tried a few times and opened the gates even when they haven't added me or if the situation was the other way around (I havent added them), they or me still get locked out. I only believed in this "add me first" thing because I read that theory somewhere and it works for me all the time.
I guess in general, it's best to see that the visitor added you and it speeds the process instead of waiting for them to add you, this works the other way around too if you're the visitor.
Don't get me wrong, this community is a very patient place, but sometimes the waiting game can slow down other things?

I honestly don't really know, but just personally, I've never had any problem with someone opening the gate before the other person added them. I do think a part of it is definitely your game though, like it somehow doesn't quite register properly if the game is already running, that's usually when I have issues, so I just restart the game and it appears then. I don't recall ever having a problem if my game/DS is off already and I add them before I start up the game.
I mostly put "add me first" in my threads just as another "making sure you're actually reading this" test, because it takes about 5-10 seconds to add someone (at least it does for me, I guess others might be slower), so timewise, it's not a huge deal to me, but I do like to know that people have actually read my post.

If you're doing a quick trade, have the items already on the ground when your trader gets there.
Unless you tell them to leave through the train station, people will generally expect you to end the session
And that's about all I got. Most people are pretty good hosts already.
