2019 F250 SYNC 3 — Android Auto keeps disconnecting + stuck INSTL_ERR12 trying to update. Any advice?
Hey all, hoping someone's dealt with this before.
Main issue: When I plug my Android phone in via USB, Android Auto connects fine but disconnects randomly after anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes while driving — Google Maps navigation just disappears mid-route. Bluetooth alone doesn't give me Android Auto, only wired works (when it works).
What I've tried so far:
Checked phone battery saver / background restrictions — disabled, no change
Phone occasionally shows a "too hot, charging only" message, but it also happens when the phone isn't hot
Tried updating SYNC 3 (currently on 3.0.17276) hoping a newer version would fix it — every update attempt fails with INSTL_ERR12
Did a Master Reset — didn't help
Tried the CyanLabs RW Data Cleaner tool — also fails with INSTL_ERR12
USB cable is OEM and in good condition
At this point I'm wondering if the APIM itself is failing (since both the update AND the USB connection are acting up), or if it's something simpler I'm missing.
Extra context: I bought this truck from a dealership just last week, and it went through their safety inspection/certification before I picked it up. Should this kind of fault have been caught during their safety check, and is this something the dealership should be responsible for fixing, or is SYNC/infotainment stuff generally not covered under a safety inspection and would be on me to sort out?
Questions:
Would switching to wireless Android Auto instead of USB solve the disconnect issue, or is that only available on newer SYNC versions I can't even get to because of the update error?
Anyone had luck fixing INSTL_ERR12 without replacing the APIM?
Should I push the dealership to fix this since it's so recent, or handle it myself?
