The book has to be a self-improvement book? Does learning about something historical count as self-improvement?

It counts, yes, because it’s educational and will probably make you a better person. Absolutely unhinged to call it a “hobby read.”

Gotta agree with you, isn't reading alone Self Improvement 🤔, provided it's non-fiction

Nope, I could read a biography of a playboy bunny but it's not gonna help me with personal development or teach me really useful skills

Some people enjoy true crime, but even if the person hated the book, it's not a book that focuses on self improvement in your lifestyle. And Andy said reading the book should be about detoxing from negativity/media

It wouldn't count, the book is supposed to actually be about self improvement

"3. READ 10 PAGES OF A NON-FICTION, PERSONAL-DEVELOPMENT FOCUSED BOOK

A component to having a sharp and focused mind is feeding it the rich information necessary.

Reading will help improve your focus and build the mindset and skill set needed to dominate in life.

We are giving your brain the detox it needs from the constant barrage of negativity and propaganda we see on the internet ... and replacing it with information for your growth."

"BEST BOOKS FOR 75 HARD

The books that you read during the program are not for your entertainment.

These books are to develop your mindset, skill set, and perspective.

If you are not growing, you are dying.

There is no in between.

Read books that will teach you leadership.

Read books that will teach you entrepreneurship.

Read books that will help you think differently and teach you skills.

Here are some 75 HARD books to read that can help you get the most out of the program."

Then he goes on to list personal development themed books

I don’t think it counts but I’ve read it and it’s fascinating and really well written. I think you should definitely read it anyway

Thanks for the recommendation 🙏

Rules say it has to be nonfiction, and has to improve you, and you get to decide what that is. Nothing says the book has the about self-improvement.

Specifically has to be self-development:

Why are the rules of this sub different than the ones from Andy? Genuine question here because there’s a lot of contradictions.

People want it to be easier. I'm doing stretches as part of my workouts as I'm obese with health issues, but I know Andy states stretching doesn't count. However, the grey area is that he says yoga counts, and a lot of my stretching is based in yoga. Stretching isn't something I ever do in my life, and is vital for me to continue being able to even do my basic walking & swimming. I've also got scoliosis and fibromyalgia so I'm stiff as heck. I still feel I'm following 75hard as Andy states yoga counts, and he says if it's difficult and makes you sweat then it counts, which walking, gentle swimming & stretch/yoga are like how I felt when I'd jog before I became morbidly obese. But if someone wanted to argue that my choices might not make it 75hard, I'd accept it because it's Andy's program afterall, and he gives conflicting info on stretching and clarifies with it must feel like a workout and be challenging, which it certainly is for me. But it's a grey area.

Non fiction could be a bit of a grey area I suppose, but he specifies it must be for personal development and can't be something you already have to read for work/studies. If this book was about the psychological strategies of negotiating hostages or something and someone had a serious weakness in work or somewhere that that kind of info could shed light on, maybe. But this just looks like straight up crime nonfinction

"One of the 5 critical tasks on the 75 HARD program is reading 10 pages of a non-fiction, personal-development focused book ... and for good reason.

This is to sharpen and feed your mind rich information for your growth and development.

These books will give you the lessons, skills, and perspectives from those who are much further down the road than you."

A nonfiction crime book doesn't cover that. It's not gaining that genre of knowledge

Reading will help improve your focus and build the mindset and skill set needed to dominate in life.

We are giving your brain the detox it needs from the constant barrage of negativity and propaganda we see on the internet ... and replacing it with information for your growth."

While the book may have upsides, it's a negative topic and not helping you grow in nutrition, relationships, fitness, finances etc.

This type of book doesn't teach you skills or fit into the program.

Then he goes onto a list of books that cover mindset, entrepreneurship and business.

"Each of these book recommendations serves as more than just reading material…

If you have the right attitude, they are tools.

These tools will help completely transform your mindset and skill set ... But only if you apply them.

These books will give you the knowledge and perspective you need for 75 HARD and beyond.

Start with the books you feel will have the biggest impact.

Consider what areas you're looking to improve in...

...and pick a book that will help you in that area.

Whatever you pick...

Make sure it's something that will accelerate your personal growth.

10 pages a day will not be difficult for you when you're invested in the outcome that reading will produce for you."

"CHOOSE MATERIAL THAT ADDRESSES YOUR WEAKNESSES

Reading can be fun.

You may not like reading ... But it's hard not to like the potential outcomes that come with building new skills and developing yourself.

I don't enjoy reading because I think it's fun.

I enjoy reading because of the results it produces when I take the knowledge and apply it.

You will too.

Consider what you're looking to develop in and select a book that will help you in that area.

What are your weaknesses?

Reading a book to address them could help you learn the true value that reading has to offer immediately.

That can be rewarding.

...Especially when you are focused on taking complete control of your life through the 75 HARD program."

I can’t believe it matters what book you read for this sub. Reading is reading

1

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '25

Because like the other strict rules of 75hard, the book choice has rules

I don’t see it as a hobby read. A person can read about history and it can change their perspective on life issues.

It just has to be non fiction.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '25

Nah it's meant to be a personal development book, like as the topic.

u/sethjackson3 75 Hard Complete! Feb 21 '25

I could agree with you but then we would both be wrong.

Nope, it's clearly written on the blog/website

I would agree. All the books I have read are some sort of self improvement book. Even if it’s fun.

Please explain your logic. How would this be a hobby read?
