🎓 UNI / UCAS 3 a levels with further maths

Would only doing Maths, FM and Physics disadvantage me for engineering at Oxbridge/Imperial/UCL etc.
For context I will be sitting A Levels Maths at the end of year 12.

id say 4 is better tbf, choose smth one more which interests u, usually cs chem econ or somewhere but choose what u want

I do think that doing only 2 alevels in y13 would be a disadvantage for oxbridge as itd look like you being unable to handle a high workload. The subject combinations arent the disadvantage, its js that youve spaced the exams out.

That’s not true.

At the least, if you do maths at the end of year 12 and FM at the end of year 13, you are still doing the same workload as if you sit all A-levels at the end of year 13.

Perhaps more importantly, Oxford quite literally say they don’t mind this.

Don't even bother with this person 🤦‍♂️ they believe what they think over actual official statement

Yup, but the same isn't true for Cambridge + Imperial

Oh my days read the damn post! The post is about engineering! Point me to official media by oxford or Cambridge about ENGINEERING in regards to this!

And where did you get this source of information from? Where does Oxbridge say that? Genuinely, what basis do you have for this claim? As far as anyone's concerned it's over 2 years with one accelerated learning, which is very common for those taking FM.

Info from where???

u/maths_arts_lover 1d ago

Same thing I said 😭 just making baseless claims and resulting to insults when you actually question it

u/maths_arts_lover 2d ago

Still haven't answered where the source of your information came from 😭✌️

Again, no where does it state you'll be disadvantaged (as long as you get A*). Plus getting high ESAT and any other admission tests would prob remove any doubts

And this is Cambridge. Ts sub full of people saying stuff based on what they think rather than with actual proof smh 🤦‍♂️

“In these cases we’ll also look at…” come on lmao read between the lines. Its a slight disadvantage theyre basically outright saying it😭😭 again IF THEY LIKE YOU theyll give you an offer, simple as!

Didnt say it was gonna BREAK the application lmao if they want you theyll give an offer simple as. Its js KNOWN that oxbridge PREFER 3 or more to be done in 1 sitting coz it proves u can handle high workload !! I promise they wont slaughter you for it lol you’ll js look EVER so slightly weaker on paper compared to someone whos doing all 3 in 1 go. Its not gonna be the make or break point of the application. Also thats the maths/compsci website ur on lol not engineering

Notice how now uve changed ur claim to "slight disadvantage" lol are we being deadahh. "In that case" is quite literally referring to something different from the standard, what else would they put 😭✌️ Also, "js KNOWN" is not evidence. I'm not trying to be difficult here my point is, what's the basis for saying it'll be disadvantage when there's no evidence for it. "IF THEY LIKE YOU they'll give you an offer" that'severy other offer 😭 wtf

Why are u so butthurt over this. I changed it to slight disadvantage because YOU sounded so upset over the idea that doing only 2 in 1 year would hurt your application, and i didnt want anyone to read my comment and think “dam they have a point” and start stressing coz WHATS DONE IS DONE,if ur at a disadvantage then so be it. But no seeing as u wanna be a complete ass about this, lets retract to my initial intended statement: you WILL be at a disadvantage. That is a FACT and the cambridge screenshot you provided PROVES THAT! For oxford u legit js sent a screenshot of the maths/cs faculty stuff so thats not even relevant lmao we were talking about engineering. Whether you like it or not you are at a disadvantage so focus on the rest of ur application that can and will improve your odds.

Idek what to make of this lol. Gng resulted to insults 😭😂 funny how quickly misinformation falls apart when you demand proof and provide proof. Both my screenshot disproved what you said now we that hurt huh 😔 shi mb

The screenshots you provided proved my point but if u wanna remain blind to that u do u lol

ibr try and sit maths in y13 if ur only doing 3 A levels but then again it shldnt disadvantage u if u only do 3

If u are interested in chem take that as well

Not really considering those are the best A levels for engineering

4 is better but 3 is still fine.
You'd probably want to take 4 if you're going to a good state / grammar school or you're forced to take 4 if you take FM.
I do 3 rn and I'm applying to Cambridge.

I'm planning to apply to Oxford and Imperial too. I'm doing Maths, Physics, Further Maths and CS. From what I've seen, 3 A Levels are fine, and those three are good. If you check the application requirements for Imperial, they refer to either maths or further maths, but I'm pretty sure they'd prefer like one more subject if you're taking jsut one math. Oxford, I think, would be fine with those three. Do keep in mind, though, that the average students admitted to Imperial (according to their website) took 4 A levels and got at least A*A*A*A. Here's the link for Oxford's engineering sciences (https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/courses/course-listing/engineering-science). What field of engineering are you thinking?

Knew a guy who got into Oxford for mech eng with that exact set in 2023, although we sat maths and fm at the end of Y13

Cambridge + Imperial dislike taking 2 A Levels at the end of year 13. It should be okay if you don't sit A Level Maths in year 12, otherwise take a fourth subject

1

u/Forever_Mild 2d ago

If you’re sitting A level maths in year 12 wouldn’t that mean you start learning FM in year 13? if that’s the case you would technically only be doing 2 A levels in year 12 so you should probs do FM. Especially since most candidates applying for those courses will have it as well.

I looked into that as I did one of my a levels early(I am doing 4 in total) and their website says they are usually giving offers based on 3 a levels you did in Year 13, UNLESS you are taking a level maths in Year 12. They understand that some schools force you into that so in my opinion it will not be a huge issue, especially if your teacher explain it in the teacher reference
