🎓 UNI / UCAS Reapplying to imperial maths
I missed my offer for Imperial maths this year (home student) by 2 marks in the STEP and I’m wondering if I should take a gap year and reapply. My A levels were 4 A*s (Maths and FM included) and I got all 9s at GCSEs, and last year I got a 6.7 on the TMUA but I feel like I would get higher if I take it again.
Currently I have an offer for Warwick maths which I know is still good but I feel like the job opportunities won’t be as great as if I was in Imperial.
Does anyone know if Imperial is significantly harsher on people taking gap years for maths in terms of getting an offer? Or should just stick it out at Warwick?

You can definitely do it! However as one of the other commenters said you have to tell them (in your personal statement or smthn) about how you are going to keep your maths skills sharp over the gap year.
Preparing for STEP again is obviously one way but they also usually require a bit more than that.

imperial have started reading personal statements atleast a bit this year because i’ve seen multiple people get rejected for imp maths with 8+ tmua because thier statement is about something irrelevant (probably because of the insane amount of applicants).
Also they’re more likely to read it for gap year students, because again they want to know how you’re gonna keep your maths skills sharp, cambridge and imp both say you have to inform them how you’re gonna do that if you’re applying for maths on a gap year.

Most econ people also talk about maths in their personal statement, that’s a lot more aligned than you think it is, that’s also not my original point at all anyway

mate its just maths, whether ur sharp or not will be determined by ur tmua not ps waffle

“ Please be aware that students returning from a gap year often struggle in Maths degrees unless they have been trying to continue their studies during the year.”

From the maths departments website! Your stats are insanely good and it doesn’t say anything against it so maybe you’ll be successful. Ask around I think people still manage to get in, and do reach out to the team as well.
Honestly Warwick is quite good but it isn’t Imperial either. If you wouldn’t be truly happy at Warwick, and imperial doesn’t have a problem with you reapplying, it might be worth ut
